In my experience, Chainer requires a ton of mana to work properly. Therefore, i really liked Black Market and Gilded Lotus in my Chainer deck. Bubbling Muck can also lead to some great turns. It's also nice to have access to sacrifice outlets to prevent accidental exiling of creatures due to Chainer's ability, as well as some lifegain to ensure you can activate him a couple of times. Disciple of Griselbrand provides both effects and has repeatedy impressed me in my games.
Baleful Force migth be another good fatty for you, without Erebos constantly available, some more card draw seems useful.

Emzed, i agree that iI should find room for Black Market. Overall I think the deck has solid ramp with crypt ghost, cabal coffers, nykthos, and then thespian's stage to copy. Disciple of griselbrand also looks very solid. Thanks!

Mindslicer is an incredibly powerful creature that trashes hands when it dies. Reanimate it with Chainer repeatedly, then sacrifice it to any of your outlets to destroy control players.

While a little expensive, Sheoldred, Whispering One is a powerful multiplayer bomb that demands an immediate response. Culls your opponents creature for reanimation, and brings back yours without Chainer's downside exile clause.

Caged Sun is incredible in any monocolored EDH deck; you'll never run out of mana to cast things, plus it gives your creatures an additional anthem effect, including things stolen with Chainer.

Another expensive but great card is Demonic Tutor. Grabs exactly what you want for the low price of 2 cmc.

Awesome decklist!

Austin_Smith_of_Cards,

Thanks so much for the feedback! I've purposely not included demonic tutor in here. My copy is in another more competitive deck. I wanted to challenge Ge myself here by not using Vampiric or Demonic Tutor. You're right that it's great though!

I don't own a sheoldred, but you're right that it would work great. If I ever get one I'll add it.

Mindslicer is a bit too mean for what I'm trying to do hehe. Generally my playgroup stays away from mass discard effects.

Caged Sun would be great in here. What should I cut for it? Another ramp card?

I would cut either Necromancy or Grave Betrayal for the Caged Sun. You've already got access to so many reanimation effects, especially with your commander, so redundancy can be reduced.

I really like the deck! I run a similar deck with Balthor the Defiled. If you're looking for great ways to fill graveyards, might I suggest Mesmeric Orb and Perpetual Timepiece? Orb can be a rediculously powerful card if you are careful. Not to mention it can easily deck those pesky token decks or anything that likes to tap/untap infinitely. Timepiece allows you to fill your own graveyard nicely, and gives you a failsafe if someone tries to remove your graveyard or you really want something out of it that Chainer can't get back.

I like this deck! Love the removal an recursion theme. +1, and I think worth building something like it. Another good reanimate card you can target other graveyards with is Ashen Powder.

Austin_Smith_of_Cards, I've put in Caged Sun. I've also partially changed my mind on the number of tutors. I swapped Vampiric Tutor back in hehe.

Podma101, I really like your deck too :) I have Mesmeric Orb and Perpetual Timepiece in my Gisa and Geralf: Siblings of Self-Mill deck and love them. Just to have difference between the decks, I think I'm going to avoid doing much self-mill in this one.

Where is No Mercy

An unsung MVP of my own Chainer deck has been Infernal Tribute. The cost is pretty sweet for devotion and being able to sacrifice artifacts, enchantments or lands can catch people off guard since black can't usually do that.

F.R.F, nice suggestion. I'll look into getting one. More sac outlets are always good and I like the black devotion.

venok, I really like No Mercy. However, this really isn't a pillowfort deck. I have a copy of it in my Marchesa, Political Queen of Pillows where it is at home :)

Hipparchos, Sol Ring is banned in my usual playgroup. I don't have it in any of my decks. I don't own a copy of Sheoldred. I've thought about buying one. Whenever friends cast it, it seems to die right away though. That's why I've been hesitant to invest money in buying one. If I do pick one up, it would be going in here.

Are you sure Black Sun's Zenith is better than Dimir Machinations? Many of your best cards cost 3, so you can transmute for card advantage (Necropotence), interaction (Fleshbag Marauder, Hero's Downfall, Toxic Deluge), or a synergystic card (Ashnod's Altar, Buried Alive, Necromancy). Both BSZ and transmuting Dimir Machinations are equally mana intensive, but the great flexibility provided by the transmute ability looks really powerful to me.

Emzed, that's an interesting point regarding having a ton of good cards at CMC 3 that I could transmute for. My problem with transmute in black (this doesn't apply to blue) is that black has multiple unconditional tutors. If I wanted another tutor in here, I'd probably go for Demonic Tutor or Entomb since they can fetch me any card. I've purposely kept my amount of tutors down. Really appreciate the suggestion though!

I do agree that Black Sun's Zenith isn't the greatest boardwipe. Sometimes it can be mana-intensive to kill everything you need to. I may take it out and put Murder back in. The deck is short on instant-speed removal.

I noticed you have Merciless Executioner but not Fleshbag Marauder. Not a fan of the art? lol

Head Collector, I found I didn't really need both. So yes...when I cut one I decided based on art haha

Thanks for the suggestion i24. Endless ranks of the dead is certainly on theme with the deck but I worry about it running too slowly. You need quite a few zombies on the field at any given time to make it worthwhile and I don't know how often this deck will go wide enough. I'll consider it though!

July 5, 2017 2:41 p.m.

Emzed says... #20

I feel Endless Ranks of the Dead falls squarely into the "win more" camp. It's great if your plan is going well already, but even then it takes at least a full turn to do anything at all. It's not able to help you convert an advantage into a win in a short time, so your opponents still get a good deal of time to stop you. But if you are in a bad spot, the card is basically a blank. So, it's both slow and bad if you are behind. If it were really, really powerful, it might still be okay (Praetor's Counsel is an example of such a card), but getting a couple of tokens just isn't an insane effect.

How well does this commander work with the eternalize? When they spoiled this I was concerned about how the 4/4 deal would go since some creatures come back smaller, and EDH tends to have a lot of hefty creatures

MegaMatt13 says... #22

Podma101 I am reanimating creatures more for their ETB effects than their bodies. I'm also using them to trigger the God's upkeep ability. If this deck was more focused on attacking, I could see how the 4/4 body could be a problem. However in this deck their size doesn't really matter.

Preordain and Ponder along with Brainstorm in most decks allow you to play far fewer lands. The other thing I would say is try to get your average CMC below 3.
