The Slaughterhouse

The Purpose

I've been on a little personal quest to build decks that have win-cons that utilize each part of the game, such as the hand or graveyard. Here, we're gonna take a look at creatures. I could have just built a very creature centric deck, hit 'em with something big or something, but I personally felt that it was too.. well.. obvious. So I came up with a way to use creatures as basically fuel for other operations.

The key combo here is Heartless Summoning + 2 Myr Retriever. The way this works is that Heartless Summoning makes the Myr Retriever free to cast, so you play it and it dies. You then play the 2nd one and it dies. Then you return the first to your hand, play it for free, and it dies, and you repeat until you have accomplished the amount of triggers you need to do. Stopping the process just requires that you keep the Myr Retriever in your hand until you're ready to start the triggers again.

This is a new version of the deck. The first version used Heartless Summoning + Assemble the Legion, but it took quite some time to get Assemble the Legion out since it has a CMC of 5, then even more time for it to start creating enough tokens to matter. It also made me have to splash red in an already 2 color deck. Then I switched it to use Heartless Summoning, Teysa, Orzhov Scion, and Painter's Servant to go infinite. This combo had more parts, thats the downside, but it was faster, had lower CMC, goes infinite immediately, and stays within Orzhov's color scheme. This newest version is cheaper to play, easier to tutor for, and more reliable.

Card Breakdown

Altar of the Brood

  • This is one of the many win cons the deck possesses. Once you start _The Slaughterhouse_ machine, you can mill your opponents out immediately.

Cruel Celebrant

  • This will both kill opponents and get you lots of life, once _The Slaughterhouse_ machine has started.
  • Careful, with Heartless Summoning out, this becomes a 0/1. Not useful for combat at all.

Daxos, Blessed by the Sun

  • His lifegain ability will actually trigger at double the rate with _The Slaughterhouse_ running, which is pretty cool.
  • He also will always have at least 2 toughness due to his mana cost increasing my devotion, so he will survive Heartless Summoning being put out.

Dictate of Erebos

  • If you have the slaughterhouse operational, this card will wipe out your enemies board.

Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim

  • This basically is an improved version of Cruel Celebrant due to the deathtouch, the fact it's a 2/2, and the fact that the lifegain still works without _The Slaughterhouse_ running.

Fateful Absence

  • Just some decent white removal.

Feast of the Victorious Dead

  • Once _The Slaughter_ has begun, this card is just pure profit. It's first ability lets you directly gain life for however many times you decide to do your infinite death trigger.
  • This second ability lets you beef up your creatures with +1/+1 counters for each time you do your death trigger. And what makes this card so special is that these counters can be spread to all your creatures, meaning that none of them will be singled out as a target. They can all be threats together.

Heartless Summoning

  • The other piece of the puzzle. This will be the card that kills the Myr Retrievers generated by your infinite death loop, turning that -1/-1 counter penalty into a strength. This card has no downsides.
  • All I really wanted out if this card was something to kill the Myrs, but it turns out that what this card actually does, is give you a great discount on casting creatures. That's kinda helpful too.

Myr Retriever

  • This is the other main piece of the combo. Poor guy never stood a chance.
  • What makes this combo so reliable is that it doesn't matter if one of these dies. Use it as a chump, whatever. It's all good.

Phyrexian Vivisector

  • This is a fun little mechanic. Once you get the meat grinder going, you can start getting a lot of scry and rig your draws. Pretty cool.

Shred Memory

  • Dimir is truly such a useful guild. This cards primary function is as a tutor. Every card in the combo, and most cards in the deck cost 2 mana to cast, so if you're missing one of those combo pieces you can transmute to find it.

Scheming Symmetry

  • Just an additional tutor.

The Meathook Massacre

  • This card will likely be played while paying 0 for the X, the main ability we want is the life draining one to kill our opponents.
  • If you're in a pinch, this could be good against a token deck, if you're willing to wipe out whatever creatures you have out. Should'nt be too much of an issue since you could start _The Slaughterhouse_ and let your enchantments carry you.

Vampire of the Dire Moon

  • This dude is here to be a combatant while you get your stuff set up. He's a very cheap 1 drop that people will be very nervous to approach with that deathtouch/lifelink combo.
  • Since it is a 1/1 creature, it will get killed by Heartless Summoning so be careful. That can be a good thing though, as doing that can get an extra trigger.
