The storm approaches... and it's Standard viable !Hello everybody ! My name is -Sylex- and I'm back with another brew for you guys : B/R Aggro Midrange As usual, I want to go in a new and unique direction with my deck. I tried a few different things and I decided to brew from a different angle : Instead of trying to brew in a ''Johnny'' way ( Jeskai Bounce ) or in a ''Timmy'' way ( Mono-White Warriors/Tokens (Budget) ), I deckbuilded a sweet tryhard-but-still-awesome ''Spike'' deck :-D.
Why should you play this deck ?
Red and Black are very well positioned in current format : Red has access to powerful creatures, burn and value spells like Goblin Rabblemaster, Stormbreath Dragon, Lightning Strike,
Hordeling Outburst
,
Stoke the Flames
and Outpost Siege. On the other hand, Black has access to efficient cheap creatures, hand disruption and kill spells in the form of Bloodsoaked Champion, Thoughtseize, Duress,
Ultimate Price
and Hero's Downfall. In other words, is a very powerful and versatile combination that can fight most meta threats. For all thoses of you who like to play aggro but dont like to see their 2-3 drops outclassed in the mid-late game, this deck is the best of both worlds :-) !
Card Choices
Creatures :Blood-Chin Rager : For thoses of you you hadn't noticed yet, the most of the deck's creatures ( except for the dragons of course ) are Warriors. That makes Blood-Chin Rager excellent in this deck. First, it's a 2/2 for with evasion, which is decent on it's own and can attack for 2-6 damage if left unchecked over the course of the game. But the main reason why this guy is in our deck is because giving a good form of evasion to our multiple Warriors makes blocking a puzzle for your opponents. It allows for some easy 2-for-1's with Goblin Rabblemaster for example. But sometimes, they wont even get to block considering how much instant speed creature removal the deck has.Bloodsoaked Champion : This card is a excellent 1 drop : It's a 2/1 for that can put some pressure during early turns and recur from the graveyard. He's excellent alongside Brutal Hordechief since you can attack and use the hordechief ability, put all the blockers on Bloodsoaked Champion and use it's graveyard recursion ability. Brutal Hordechief : This card is the centerpiece of the deck. If left unchecked for too long, his triggered ability in conjunction with his activated ability can turn the tide of a game in your favor, at almost any stage in the game. He has great synergies with
Hordeling Outburst
and Goblin Rabblemaster and pretty much every other creature in the deck. Goblin Rabblemaster : This goblin is such a amazing threat ! His mana efficiency and power level have been proven many times in the latest tournaments. Not running a full set of Goblin Rabblemaster in a Red based Aggro/Midrange deck would be a huge mistake in my opinion. Most importantly, he works phenomenally well in this deck. Between the access to a wide range of efficient removal and cards like Brutal Hordechief, might be the best color combination to clear the way of blockers and attack in for a billion of damage with the Goblin Rabblemaster ability.
Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury
and Stormbreath Dragon : Having huge flying dragons on the battlefield is one of the coolest ( for the the Timmy Inside of you :-) ) , but also at the same time one of the most efficient ( for the Spike Inside of you :-) ) way to kill your opponents in the current Standard. Before you begin to argue on wether or not I should run Stormbreath Dragon over Kolaghan or vice-versa, I think they have their pros and cons and I'll run both since I like them a lot.Thunderbreak Regent : Statistics-wise, having a 4/4 flying is very good. But it's incredibly good when this creature also has a relevant ability ! 3 damage to the face is nothing to scoff at and removing Thunderbreak Regent is mandatory since it can bring down a life total from 20 to 0 in a short amount of time. Oh, and it's a Frickin Dragon !Instant/Sorceries:Tokens spells
Hordeling Outburst
:Having multiples small bodies on reasonaly costed cards is extremely powerful . But in this deck,
Hordeling Outburst
provides so much more then that. The card's real power here lies in the little synergies with the rest of the deck : Brutal Hordechief allows for ''brutal'' plays, Goblin Rabblemaster can pump himself depending on the number of attacking goblins and finally,
Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury
can make your goblin army deadly, even more so when there's another dragon on the field.Hand disruptionThoughtseize : It's a simple , yet very useful spell that allows you to take your opponents best card and ruin their game plan. I dont want to run 4 in the mainboard since it's a pretty bad topdeck by turn 5+ and it has competition with Bloodsoaked Champion in the 1 drop slot.Direct damage
Draconic Roar
and Lightning Strike :Again, simple and powerful spells. I decided to go for 2 Lightning Strike and 2
Draconic Roar
since this way, I'm sure of being able to burn a creature with either spells or burn straight to the face if needs be.Targeted creature removalHero's Downfall and
Ultimate Price
:In a format dominated by creature decks, having mainboard direct removal is essential. Hero's Downfall takes care of almost everything and can also remove theses annoying Planeswalkers., while
Ultimate Price
can be played to remove most, but not all, of meta threats for 2 mana.Enchantments :Outpost Siege :It's currently one of the best card advantage engine in Red , a color that has traditionally not access to such kind of effects. 95 % of the time, you'll want to cast it then name Khans to get the extra card each turn. In rare cases, you can also name Dragons, such as you have more creatures then the opponent's life total
