what about Mutilate ?

January 27, 2013 2:59 p.m.

Why not [Death's Approach] for creature removal? Since its a mill deck they will have creatures in their graveyard for sure. Its one cost is nice also. Doesn't have to have the mutilate effect for [Tragic Slip] and costs less than Ult price and [Mutilate].

@Chocolatekisses Mainly because it's an enchantment, which can only be played on my turn. The versatility of having the instant kill spells works better most of the time.

I, too, am unsold on Dream Twist , especially given there's 13-big mill cards in this deck. I haven't playtested it enough, but I think a single Snapcaster Mage can prove to be a winning move when used to flash back a Mind Grind late game. It's situational but often lethal. Going along with this, we could add a few Psychic Strike s, which counter a spell at the cost of one less card milled, a cost this deck can currently afford to pay as noted above.

Successful raw mill decks often require some sort of board lock or heavy control in order to work. The other approach, which we see in this deck, is the threat of big damage, through the Guildmage+Jace combo and Consuming Aberration . I think this approach could use some more attention, meaning the Evil Twin s could be replaced by something like card:Jace's Phantasm, because there's very few cards that are better than a 5/5 flyer as early as Turn 3 and consistently by Turn 4 (you could lock the board down with one of these, let alone if you somehow got two of them out).

In sum, I would do the following: -4Dream Twist -2Evil Twin , +1Snapcaster Mage +3Psychic Strike +2card:Jace's Phantasm

I'm excited for Dimir Mill. It has a lot of potential and this is a very, very well made deck. +1

All of my experiences with mill decks over the past year and a half point to a single conclusion: Mill decks are simply best when they are control decks with Jace, Memory Adept as the primary win-condition.

Think about it. Why use Mind Sculpt on your opponent when you're just going to play Jace anyways? You're not about to mill someone out before Jace hits the board, nor are you going to mill someone out if Jace dies immediately. So wouldn't that Mind Sculpt just be better off as removal or as a counterspell? to help you control the board in the turns leading up to and directly following Jace?

January 29, 2013 1:16 a.m.

@zandl: I think Duskmantle Guildmage changes things entirely. That first ability paired with a Mind Sculpt is 7 damage as well as 7 cards milled. The damage can easily be a win-con with one of those on the table. I'll be making a version of this soon, probably with 4 of the Guildmage.

But that wouldn't be until turn-5 anyways (same as Jace). And your opponent would likely just nuke your Guildmage the moment it came out.

Ah, read the first ability as cost BU not 1BU. You have a point.

has Spell Rupture been considered for a counterspell at all? not sure if it really fits but if you have a 5/5 phantasm or a 20/20 aberration it would be mighty hard to pay the extra cost

It has been, but mainly the counters are for early game. At that point, the only creatures I would have out are card:Jace's Phantasm and Duskmantle Guildmage . Possibly Lazav, Dimir Mastermind .

Something I found interesting was Devour Flesh for removal of their creatures as if you're trying to mill them out, life total hardly matters. But it also works to target your own Consuming Aberration and give yourself 20 life. If you're going to add removal I think it's a good way to go.

Thinking about guarding this deck against aggro a bit better, and I thought of Vampire Nighthawk . You already have Fog Bank and card:Jace's Phantasm, which are great, but sometimes I think the nighthawk is one of the best defenses against aggro because it can keep an opponent from attacking at all from not wanting to lose his creatures. Furthermore, if he does block, he's got that lifelink which, against a weenie aggro deck, would practically make him a double blocker because you gain 2 life back of what you just took. Just a thought...

Added to SB.

@Shabobi: nice. I have a quick question. You have some amazing creature removal in your SB, so why do you also have 3 Essence Scatter s? My guess is to get around hexproof... which is a great reason to have them with your Psychic Strike s. However, do you think that Devour Flesh or Tribute to Hunger might also solve that problem? Those aren't exactly suggestions I was just wondering your rationale because the SB, as it is, is almost completely creature removal save for Psychic Strike . What about 2 more Cyclonic Rift s for artifacts and enchantments? or even Negate instead of Essence Scatter ? I just can imagine other potentially problematic situations that a SB could be equiped for. For instance, a card:Tormod's Crypt or Rest in Peace being used to mess with Consuming Aberration or something. A Pithing Needle may even be necessary in case of planeswalkers. However, I can't really think of anything else as terrible as aggro at the moment.

Sorry this one question got way too drawn out. The sideboard has some of the best removal and control for Dimir so I'm not saying its bad at all. just that it's very "creature-focused". I'll shut up now.

I found when playtesting a simalir variant of this deck Duskmantle Seer did amazing wonders for me. I give me extra draw and it potentially made my opponent lose life.

February 19, 2013 11:45 a.m.

Hey how about Duskmantle Seer ?

@nothingbutblue Not as good in this as you may think. With a decent amount of higher CMC cards, it hurts me more then helps me usually.

So how's it doing at FNM?

February 24, 2013 7:28 p.m.

The Doctor says... #19

I've only ran it twice, and it did pretty decent.

My LGS's meta is all out aggro, so it has some trouble. I placed 3rd and 4th when I used it.

Is the Crypt Ghast in there so that you can cast ridiculously massive Mind Grinds ?

yo just wondering how do you cope early game being a control deck with no removal and no big creature threats till mid game. Yes there are the phantasms but not big enough of a chance you'll get one until later. Im just wondering cuz i got my own deck big booty big mill that is more cipher driven but has more removal/disruption for early threats

I am really liking this deck! My only problem has been when I go up against Boros and Burn Decks. Any suggestions on what I could do to slow them down?
