CheatingLefty: Honestly, I really liked Snapback here, but it eventually got cut for Transmute Artifact, which has been INSANE (sped the whole deck up by almost a turn).

And Mission Briefing is BONKERS, I love it. I opened on in the prerelease last night, and it fits right in here (over the slot formerly occupied by Personal Tutor).

Have you tried Whir of Invention? I like it in my list because I can flash in one of my win cons before I untap.

CrimsonKing: I've definitely been considering it, but the most common thing I'd want to flash in would be Paradox Engine, and it's pretty tricky to hold up 8 mana. Moreover, I have relatively few cards that synergize with the Improvise (most of my artifacts are mana rocks). Still, you're right that I should consider it - what would you cut?

You don't want to search for and put Skullclamp or Ashnod's Altar out at instant speed??

CrimsonKing says... #5

Probably cut Recurring Insight. Trust me whir has won me so many games for just 4 or 5 mana. Getting your Isochron Scepter or Skullclamp out before your untap is extremely powerful.

Whir being flexible as to hit any target makes it very good, from experience. It can get Sol Ring and other cheap ramp (moxes/vault/crypt), improvise from resolved non-mana artifacts, and puts pieces into play unlike Fabricate. Comparing it to Fabricate, it is more cost restricted which might be the biggest issue and requires you to have the mana up-front rather than split across two turns. I've often treated Whir as another Trophy Mage to get Altar.

CrimsonKing: Fair enough. Recurring Insight has always proven itself in my meta, but I’ve been considering cutting Murder of Crows for a while. Might go in that slot, or perhaps Hurkyl's Recall?

CrimsonKing says... #8

Murder of Crows seems like a good cut. Yeah meta means everything anf the recall is good for stopping a lot of things.

My list looks like yours mostly besides my dual land and Impact Tremors/ Purphoros, God of the Forge. I mostly use those because of Propaganda effects can be heavy in my meta sometimes and having a way to win without attacking is vital. Have you tried the new niv yet? Haven't gotten around to using him yet.

CrimsonKing: I just found that he wasn't helpful because if I'd drawn 20 cards with Locust God out, I already was gonna win (through an infinite combo or what-have-you, not necessarily combat). After 50+ games of drawing him but never casting him, I just cut him to use the slot for something else. But if he works for you, more power to you!

This list is insane! Primer looks great too! Looks like you've put a lot of work in, it really shows, may your draw be plentiful.

Just curious, what do you usually tutor for with Muddle the Mixture and Spellseeker? Isochron Scepter for Muddle?

October 4, 2018 9:03 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #13

usaDiabetic: Thanks man! :D It's pretty sweet, haha.

Pinacollata: Honestly, the two tutor for many of the same cards: Dramatic Reversal if going for Dramatic Scepter, Transmute Artifact if going for a Paradox Engine loop, Cyclonic Rift if needing answers in the late-game, Mana Drain if looking for protection, Mission Briefing if you need recursion.

However, Muddle the Mixture can also grab Isochron Scepter directly, as well as mana rocks for various loops. Meanwhile, Spellseeker can also grab Pact of Negation for manaless protection, Winds of Change to create Locusts or mess up hand sculpting, or Mystic Speculation if I already have Paradox Engine on the battlefield.

How do you feel about Niv-Mizzet, Parun? So many low cost spells in the deck, seems really good. Plus, it fits into your card draw theme

October 16, 2018 9:27 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #15

IAmTheWraith: Put him in, tested, didn't like him, cut him.

He's a great card, no disagreement. The issue is that 1) that mana cost is RIDICULOUS and means he can't be ramped by many artifacts, and 2) he doesn't...do much, outside of turns where I'd win already. He makes repeatedly wheeling (or infinite draw) into a wincon, but those tend to already BE wincons here? He just ate a removal spell every time I tried to cast him. I want to include him, but I just can't justify it when I can't even ramp him out early.

How have Jace's Archivist and Magus of the Wheel been performing for you? I can't help but think that without haste they would be a little slow. I've been very hesitant to try them out because I am afraid they will die before I can actually use them.

October 17, 2018 4:03 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #17

bmorri9: Jace's Archivist has proven to be AMAZING, mostly for its reusability. Magus of the Wheel isn't BAD, and deserves a slot I think, but isn't one of the strongest performers overall. The issue of them being removed before use is not insignificant, but I find there are generally more worrying threats on the field most of the time.

Dr.Crust: Thanks, man! :D I'd love to look over what you come up with as well, if/when you upload your The Locust God list here :)

And if you like it, upvotes are very much appreciated! ;)

cool list thank you for this! have you tried out Goblin Bombardment or Impact Tremors and if so, why did you cut them?

October 18, 2018 6:11 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #21

mightydwarf: Glad you like it! :)

I tried them, but...they didn't do enough when I was comboing off. It's just a numbers thing: if I'm drawing enough cards to win via Impact Tremors (ie ~40 cards), I have other ways to win in hand (eg an infinite combo, or Shared Animosity, or just swinging with all of my insects etc). And unlike those other wincons, these don't help me much unless I'm already close to winning?

Basically, I want my wincons to pull double duty, even when my commander isn't on the battlefield? Consider Isochron Scepter: when I don't have Dramatic Reversal, it can also act as a vicious source of control if I stick a Mana Drain under it, etc.

Hope that clarifies it :)

Nice deck. The Locust God is my favourite deck to play. Have you ever had any issues with Snapback being countered when Kindred Discovery combo is happening? I am thinking about adding Foil to my deck to avoid.

October 20, 2018 7:51 a.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #23

JetSteel: I'm glad you like the deck :) I actually don't run Snapback anymore, but the same principle applies with Stifle and Firestorm, my termination methods of choice. I've never had major problems getting them to resolve, since I'm running Force of Will and Pact of Negation, and if I hold up mana before doing the combo I have many other counterspells I could use. (That being said, I HAVE died when doing this by forgetting a Ruric Thar is on the battlefield!)

JetSteel says... #24

Cool thanks for explaining yeah I need to get copies of the other cards you mentioned when budgets allow :) I notice you have Thousand-Year Storm in your maybeboard have you managed to test it out in this deck?

October 21, 2018 6:04 a.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #25

JetSteel: Yeah, I played around with it and found it really, really wants some mana rituals to back it up. As my ramp is more artifact-based rather than instant/sorcery-based it didn't do as much as I hoped it would :(
