Partner: Tymna the Weaver

Why Tymna?

Tymna offers the much-needed access to black tutors as well as options on white hatebears, tutors, and some useful cards for the turn the deck pops off. The swing-draw ability is about as likely to be useful as Silas Renn, Seeker Adept's and probably more likely to be used to great effect than Vial Smasher the Fierce in this build. The inclusion of white seems to be more important than the commander ability itself; I'd value it over red since I feel the white cards offer more value with tutors and protection than the few red cards that occured to me offhand (specifically, Red Sun's Zenith, Gamble, Vandalblast/Shattering Spree, and maybe some MLD).

The only partner I'd consider over her at the moment is Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix. Kydele has a big advantage in that she is a combo piece in and of herself if she can generate enough mana to untap Sword of the Paruns or Umbral Mantle. I'd compare them on two fronts: the turn you draw-out your deck, and the set-up for that turn.

  • Post-Draw: Tymna offers more utility once you have drawn out your deck with its access to Silence and Pull from Eternity ; she has access to any cards Kydele has access to, so I'd hand that to her.

  • Pre-Draw: In the set-up, I'd say the two are very comparable. Tymna has access to the suite of black and white tutors as well as the ever-useful Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares. Kydele has a marked advantage in presenting that combo-piece in the command zone (providing you can draw an extra card or two on your turn, which is fairly easy to perform), but apart from that, she can also very viable run a High Tide package that Tymna would struggle with at four colors, making her potentially more explosive. In this sense, in a linear path, Kydele would be better in that she can more quickly ramp to her answers, although the lack of tutors might hurt her when she tries to find her combo piece without lucky mulligans; Tymna can, however, tutor removal or counters as need be with those same black tutors, giving her more responsive to opponents' win-cons and plays and, of course, has access to the ever-loved Ad Nauseam. I would suggest that Kydele's explosiveness might make her more viable in less competitive metas, while Tymna's resiliency and consistency might make her more viable at higher levels of play.

Wincons

A: Generate infinite colorless mana, draw out the deck via Thrasios, Triton Hero, play & use Gemstone Array (or Moxen/Signets with Isochron Scepter to get U mana, then Blue Sun's Zenith each opponent for 101.

B: Generate infinite colorless mana, draw out the deck via Thrasios, play & use artifacts to get U mana, drop Lab Man, then draw to end the game.

Combo Pieces

Resiliency & Protection After Drawing Deck

  • With the deck in hand, all the free counterspells should be up to protect a Silence before playing combo pieces. This is key; if a silence can resolve, then the spot removal in the deck should be enough to secure an un-interrupted win.

  • Noxious Revival should be up to grab Gemstone Array if they were destroyed and we don't have access to green mana for Eternal Witness or Regrowth.

  • Pull from Eternity should be up to grab any key combo pieces from exile if need be to be redrawn by Thrasios.

  • Some careful use of Snapcaster Mage with Chain of Vapors could lend itself to some easy instant-speed recursion for instants or sorceries in the graveyard.

Barring Trickbind, once Thrasios hits the board with infinite mana, these tools should ensure opponents have a difficult time interacting with this win-con.

Ongoing Considerations:

  • Not sure if it's worth devoting land or deck-slots to utilizing High Tide.

  • I'm debating on cutting Rings of Brighthearth for Merchant Scroll; Rings is so expensive and seems like a dead card without specifically Sensei's Divining Top or Basalt Monolith. On the other hand, it does add some redundancy for the infinite mana combos. There is recursion for that, but it helps natural draw. On the other hand, if I go all-in on Isochron Scepter combo, I can cut the relatively dead card Gemstone Array and put in another piece of artifact ramp maybeWhat are some thoughts on this?
