Because of how much Horobi, Death's Wail changes the game, most people will want to get him off the field asap (unless it is hindering one of the op players in a multiplayer game, then others will leave him alone). So you throw him out what you need to change up the gameplay, stall for a turn or two, or you really need to get rid of something and don't have another way to deal with it.

To me, a Horobi, Death's Wail deck isn't a deck where you focus on your general all game. It's a deck where you can feel like a little kid again and change the rules of the game in the middle of the game when it favors you. It's not a focus, it's a luxury.

Knowing that you will be able to change the rules, and knowing how they change, you can build around it. Things like Staff of Nin or Oblivion Stone are very common in a lot of decks and have high value, but they get extra value when Horobi, Death's Wail is out (which let's a lot of people benefit if they start thinking differently than they are used to). Then things like Icy Manipulator and Tower of the Magistrate aren't played as much because they aren't spectacular on their own (they still function and help, but aren't game-breaking), but with Horobi, Death's Wail out, they have a much higher value.

Thanks Virlym. I've come to understand this, thus the deck has changed a lot. I've found that balance.

So now I ask, are you agreeing with me or with Fictions_Reality?

You -x-Juuzou-x-x-, I know we've been over this topic in a similar discussion and you've come quite far from where you started. However, most people think that EDH decks need to focus on their general (especially when you have a unique effect on one like Horobi, Death's Wail). So I was just clarifying for those looking at your deck and giving suggestions that follow that mindset (like Fictions_Reality's current way of thinking).

Quick thing. I don't think your Basalt Monolith+Exsanguinate+Rings of Brighthearth actually works. You can't copy Basalt Monolith's ability with Rings of Brighthearth.

@Whovian You copy the untap ability, then tap it after it untaps once. This nets one colorless mana, then you repeat infinitely to win.

If you're trying to make room for Liliana, Heretical Healer, I would probably drop Bloodghast for her. I used to run Bloodghast in the early days of my Horobi, Death's Wail deck, but its use was limited. It really just became sac fodder. It's a 2/1 body that can easily be blocked by almost anything, it can't block for you, and you really only want to draw it early game.

Arknir_Draknov I dislike killing my draw's so I've avoided stronghold, despite the seer number of people who suggest it.

Virlym Good idea. I've been told to cut Bloodghast before so it seems like a good choice. Once she gets added to the database I'll do the swap.

You have multiple ways to draw extra cards in a given turn (Staff of Nin, Phyrexian Arena, Mind's Eye, etc), and you have ways to shuffle your library. I would run it just for the utility it can provide when needed. Worst case, you just have a land that gives colorless mana. But you can also use it to bring back utility such as Solemn Simulacrum,Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, and especially Rune-Scarred Demon (which gives you a flying threat and a tutor). It can also be used against people who utilize the graveyard (put it on the top of your deck if you don't want them to reanimate it).
