UPDATE: There are some new BFZ card that could really help this idea work:

Zulaport Cutthroat, Blisterpod,and maybe:Vampiric Rites

I think some number of Zulaport Cutthroat are a good move, as supplements to Blood Artist, who does a ton of the work. Cutthroat is a lesser version, but could replace a couple Soul Sisters. Blisterpod replaces Young Wolf, easy. Vampiric Rites could add needed re-fuel draw power and trigger Athreos consistently, negating the need for both Viscera Seer and Altar's Reap.

Basic Ideas:

This deck is based in part on Ken Yukuhiro's Next Level Abzan.

The idea is to run a ton of cheap creatures that have a means of creating a persistent and wide board presence by replacing themselves, creating tokens, and returning to the battlefield from other zones. This strategy not only dilutes the opponent's targeted removal, but also creates a situation where boardwipes come with major downsides, as we can gain advantage through graveyard triggers, and bring our guys back from the yard.

The major differences between his build and mine are the Soul Sisters package, the omission of Collected Company, and a few utility creatures. I've also made room for a small disruption package that can be swapped or augmented with the sideboard, and considered some boosters like Rancor and Pendelhaven .

I'm very open to comments and suggestions as this is an early draft. Though do keep in mind that this deck is meant to be built without any super-expensive items (the final build will likely omit Marsh Flats for now). A more expensive version would definitely mainboard Voice of Resurgence and possibly Auriok Champion.

Questions:

One of the major remaining questions I haven't worked out is whether or not to run Wrath of God. I would likely run 2-3, pull out targeted removal, and throw in an additional Return to the Ranks .

Athreos, God of Passage is less questionable based on my testing, but still questionable. The idea is that he fulfills a need of the deck regardless of what the opponent chooses - he either speeds up the clock by dealing damage, or provides us with fuel/cards - his only problem is that he doesn't work with the tokens we create (but we usually draw new creatures, too). The alternative to Athreos would be a couple Rally the Ancestors, some other method of dealing damage with triggers, or some mainboard disruption.

I'm also curious as to how people rate Vampiric Rites. The deck needs sac outlets and late-game fuel. I think Rites is slightly better than Viscera Seer is this context. Seer gets us creature triggers and his ability doesn't cost mana. But Rites gets us actual draws.

And one final note:

Bring back Sword of the Meek!
