Scion of the Ur Dragon EDH

“My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!” - J.R.R.Tolkien

  1. Dragons
  2. Recursion

Tutors

This deck includes several tutors to make sure that you don't get held up in the early game, as well as provide general utility in the mid to late game.

In the early game, they are typically used to get either a ramp piece, like Bloom Tender, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove or Chromatic Lantern, or a card draw piece, like Rhystic Study, Phyrexian Arena, or Sylvan Library

Strike Dragons

Strike Dragons are designed to either be targeted by Scion and later reanimated, or hard-cast and used to attack directly

  • Balefire Dragon effectively works to wipe the opponents board by dealing damage to everything

  • Hellkite Tyrant steals opponents artefacts, allowing you to ramp, whilst also giving you an alternate win condition if there are enough of them

  • Intet, the Dreamer allows you to cheat other dragons straight into play, provided you have 5 mana up

  • Scourge of the Throne allows you to attack twice with all creatures on board. Useful for closing out the game if you have a lot of power on board

  • Savage Ventmaw allows you to cheat dragons into play when it attacks. Requires changing Scion before you attack, but gives you more bodies

  • Dragon Mage wheels your hand, as well as opponents. Useful when you want to wheel something people have tutored, or want to dump more dragons to the yard

  • The Ur-Dragon allows you to draw cards as well as cheat dragons into play. Spirals quickly, but optimal with at least another dragon on the board

  • Steel Hellkite allows you to destroy permanents with a given CMC. Its broader than single target removal, but not as complete as a board wipe

Support Dragons

Support Dragons are usually hard cast, and provide static effects which support strike dragons.

Resurrection Dragons

Resurrection Dragons allow you to get dragons back from the graveyard once they hit. These are usually hard cast as a result

Protection Dragons

Protection dragons are fairly self explanatory. They are used to protect Scion from removal. Because this deck revolves on having your commander to do win, it's going to be one of, if not the highest priority targets for removal. Thankfully, all you really need is floating.

  • Silumgar, the Drifting Death . Let's say that Scion of the Ur-Dragon is targeted by a spell like Terminate . Before terminate resolves and kills Scion, you can activate his activated ability at instant speed to turn him into a dragon with hexproof. Scion will turn into Silumgar in response, Terminate will fizzle, and Scion stays on the battlefield. Also acts as a one-sided Toxic Deluge with enough dragons on-board

  • Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon . This is a last resort protection, and this is NOT the main purpose of this dragon in the deck. This is only for a worst case scenario, if Scion of the Ur-Dragon is going to die from removal and there are no other means of protection, you can activate Scion's ability and pay Skithiryx's cost to regenerate itself before it dies from the removal.

  • Dragonlord Ojutai is hexproof as long as its untapped, whilst also allowing you to filter the top of your deck

Combos

Scion of the Ur-Dragon + Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon + Moltensteel Dragon

  • Scion on the battlefield.
  • At least 13 life.
  • 4 available.
  1. Activate Scion once.
  2. Hold priority, respond to the first activation by activating Scion again.
  3. For the first activation, turn Scion into Moltensteel Dragon.
  4. With one Scion activation on the stack and while it's a copy of Moltensteel Dragon, activate Moltensteel's pump ability 6 times giving it +6/+0.
  5. Allow the one Scion activation to resolve, choosing for it to become a copy of Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon with +6/+0.
  6. Swing at target opponent for lethal poison damage.

Lethal poison damage to one opponent in one combat phase

Animate Dead / Necromancy / Dance of the Dead + Worldgorger Dragon

Worldgorger Dragon in graveyard. Animate Dead / Necromancy / Dance of the Dead in hand. Mana available to cast available

  1. Cast Animate Dead / Necromancy / Dance of the Dead, targeting Worldgorger Dragon in your graveyard.
  2. Worldgorger Dragon enters the battlefield, exiling all other permanents you control.
  3. Animate Dead / Necromancy / Dance of the Dead triggers, sacrificing Worldgorger Dragon.
  4. All permanents exiled with Worldgorger Dragon enter the battlefield.
  5. Target Worldgorger Dragon with Animate Dead.
  6. Maintaining priority, tap all lands you control.
  7. Let the triggers resolve.
  8. Repeat steps 2-7.
