Quest for Pure Flame is really not a valid replacement for Goblin Guide. More burn spells would be better. Just max out Skullcrack, Lightning Helix, and add another Searing Blaze. It'll work out much better that way.

May I suggest Soulfire Grand Master for the sideboard? For the aggro/ burn matchup turning bolts into helix eps and gaining 6 off a helix could put you out of reach, yes it will be met with an answer but in that matchup it's better it than you

@Saljen: While I know that Goblin Guide is better than Quest for Pure Flame, it also costs 80$ for your full playset, where as Quest for Pure Flame is 1 or 2. If guide does see a reprint in MM15, then if his value drops, or I happen to pull him, I will switch over, but I find it to be a creative replacement for the guide. If you know of somewhere I can get Goblin Guide for relatively cheap (under 10$ each), please, do tell! I would like to get them eventually, I'm just compromising while I patiently wait. Though on a sidenote, quest is very good in legacy with goblin guide to fuel a hard hitting Price of Progress ;)

@cjk191997: As I just said, I like to try out different things and find solutions. It's not that I want to make a budget deck, its that I want to avoid getting guides, since I do have the rest of the deck. If I wanted to build budget, I'd make the legacy deck where I don't need fetches or to splash. Glad you like it!

@millFTW97: Thank you for making me notice I hadn't posted the sideboard :P I'm actually running Kor Firewalker for mirror match. In mirror I side out Eidolon of the Great Revel since he hurts me too much for mirros, so I side out a playset of 2 drops for 3 firewalkers and the fourth Lightning Helix. although I considered Soulfire Grand Master, He just didn't make the cut due to the fact that burn runs stuff like Searing Blood/Searing Blaze which make a grand master less than useless. I'd much rather Kor Firewalker for mirror. Usually his double white isn't an issue because it's easy to fetch for the two Sacred Foundry and easy to regain that life between the firewalker and Lightning Helix. If you have further support to Soulfire Grand Master, please, do say. I may be over looking something important.

Beyond being able to get your things back in the Grindy matches I've really got no further support for it. I've been expecting that card to break modern and legacy but it really hasn't had much impact

If it had any sort of protection, it'd be decent in specific matchups, but I wouldn't really side it against anything other than maybe boggles. Everything else had red/black for removal. And even in standard, Seeker of the Way is better.

You'll realise why Goblin Guide is the premier red one drop as soon as you have a Skullcrack and 2 Bolts in hand with 2 mana up, and you're swinging your Swiftspear into an opponent running Lightning Helix. The prowess forces you to be proactive with your burn when in reality you want to be reactive just incase someone drops a Helix, Baloth, or Siege Rhino. For that reason, Swiftspear doesn't really cut the mustard in burn.

The more I play, the most I like the instant speed reactiveness to the deck. When MM15 comes out, if I get the guides, I'll keep the quest, but drop the swiftspear. I don't like being limited to casting spells in or before combat. I'm well aware of Goblin Guide's power, he's just 20$ each, which throws him out of reach. If I get enough stuff to trade for my guides, I will. The issue is that I'm a relatively new player (I've been playing since theros) and I'm currently using this deck to transition from standard to modern. With fetches in standard, I really feel this is the right time to make that transition.

In the other hand, swiftspear (and eidolon) is what has made burn a tier 1 deck.

I feel as though those parenthesis downplay the role Eidolon played in burn becoming tier 1. And besides, the only reason burn is close to good right now is because it's fairly well matched against the undisputed king of the format, Junk, and even then the first 4 cards in a burn list aren't Swiftspears, they're Goblin Guides. To that end, all you've really done here is replace Guides with bad, slow enchantments. Ironically, that enchantment works well with Goblin Guide since he's a repeatable source of damage. Swiftspear is one of the weaker cards in burn lists since, as I mentioned, it forces you to either be proactive with your burn, or have what is basically a Raging Goblin on the board. Swiftspear gets away with it against Junk because you know he's only gaining life when he hits that 4th land to slam a Rhino down.

@branflakes20

No, Eidolon of the Great Revel is by far the most efficient card in the deck and is invaluable to it. Usually he deals more damage than any other spell too, I'm by no means trying to downplay the role he plays.

You are correct, having a Goblin Guide in play is 80% of the time better than a Monastery Swiftspear. Swiftspear also doesn't allow you to make bluffs in the same way guide can and she turns the deck into a very reckless sort of thing. Although used in taking down several GPs, playing guide more and more only increases my affinity to it. As soon as I have the resources, I will be getting my playset, however for now I'd like to get the rest of my fetches and Lightning Helix. I am a relatively new player and transitioning to modern playing burn, which is in all formats, my favorite archetype. Although the deck performs very well, IRL i have 10 proxies in it, therefore all my play has been non-competitive. However, the deck has done very well at taking down affinity, boggles and merfolk decks without much problem. against those three archetypes in addition to esper control, the deck has an average win percentage of approximately 85%. Esper control has been my toughest match up due to all the hand disruption the player runs.

This deck looks pretty similar to my burn deck, it looks like your sideboard is only meant for burn and artifact hate, I think you need to add some more cards that produce white since it seems like you're weak on that especially with having Kor Firewalker in your sideboard. Also do you think it's a good idea to run 4 Destructive Revelry when you have very limited green land presence in this deck? If you want to check out my burn deck you can, Brighter Burn

Mana has actually never been much of an issue for me. Usually I draw two fetches a game and that almost always lets me get the double white or green for kor firewalker and destructive revelry. Do you think I should add in two more sacred foundry? And as for getting the green, I will be adding Arid Mesa or Scalding Tarn if and when they see a reprint in dragons of tarkhir. With ten fetches do you think it'll be better? That'll be 14 sources of white and 11 sources of green. You think that'll work better?

Lol, no, your argument is very legitimate, from time to time I could have trouble hitting that double white, and just because I haven't hit it yet, doesn't mean I never will. As for destructive revelry, I've never had a problem due to a single green and not a double. I'm fine with the revelry, but I still hope to get those Arid Mesa anyways. Increase the land consistency a lot.

I disagree with how you regard Boros Charm. Burn cares about value almost as much as it cares about mana efficiency. Charm is one of the best cards in the deck, and it is the reason more than any other to be splashing white. I've been running 4x lightning helix for a long time, and if I could run 8 charms you can be sure I would in a heartbeat. Goblin often gets in for four damage. Add in a boros charm, and that reduces your clock by an entire turn. There is a reason why Flame Rift still sees (some) play in legacy burn, and will sometimes see main-deck play. I definitely agree that the life-gain on Lightning Helix is super relevant compared to what some people think. There are many games such as mirror matches, zoo, and even junk sometimes where you are very happy to have that last bit of text. Despite the upside of the card, it is not part of the core. Overall, i think you did a good job explaining the other aspects of the deck. I just thought I'd add my 2 cents about card selection. +1.

Funny enough, Boros Charm in real life is by far my favourite card in the deck. I'm running Quest for Pure Flame until I can get Goblin Guide and Boros charm is just the best card to go with it. I'm not sure why Boros charm is 3 or, I could swear it was 4, but maybe I dropped one for a 3rd skullcrack. I'll put back up to 4 and credit it a bit more in the description, I knew in my budget deck it was strong, so I kinda tried to underplay my hype about it when writing up on it here
