Ever hate it when your creatures die to boardwipes? I know I do. As a result, this concoction has been created. A few weeks ago, at my latest FNM, I ran into an encounter against U/W/R control, using my Vraska Midrange deck. He kept using
Terminus
and I kept getting mad, only being able to attack with one of my keyrunes consistently. 10 turns later... I won the game, with that one keyrune. He had no way to deal with it, and thus I have made: "This ain't no Kingdom Hearts", alluding to keyblades from the game.
Essentially this deck runes as a Grixis Midrange. The keyrunes give us mana fixing and ramp, and provide for attackers where we can. So we have a selection of midsized creatures, control, and ramp, seems midrange enough for me. Now let me explain why certain cards are in here.
First the keyrunes, Izzet Keyrune and
Rakdos Keyrune
. Why izzet? Why rakdos? Rakdos has first strike, which is great, and a 3/1 is decently strong when it can't usually just get pinged to death. Izzet is the weakest keyrune in itself, in the entire set. I have it in here because it fixes my two lower colors, red and blue, as well as it being a card draw engine every turn. It allows me to get a consistent flow of board control cards.
Chromatic Lantern, helps me with mana, and allows for a little bit of ramping, and for something like a turn 5 or 6 Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker.
Barter in Blood
and Killing Wave serve as creature control, which usually has a downside, but not with the keys.
Staff of Nin,
Curse of the Pierced Heart
, little bit of burn and gets my draw engine for me.
Think Twice
, lets be honest, just thinning out the deck to get to the good cards
Tragic Slip
moar removal, especially when they leave their big guy on the board after a Killing Wave
Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker finisher.
