You consider tossing in Clone and Cackling Counterpart ?

+1 from me, I have a standard deck that's very similar, Ashiok the Ripper. How often do you get Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver or Lazav, Dimir Mastermind out as is?

Have you considered Exotic Orchard or Reflecting Pool? Reflecting Pool would make playing your own stuff easier and Exotic Orchard would make playing your opponents stuff easier. Wouldn't you agree? :)

I don't know how long you plan on keeping white as a tertiary color in the deck, but you can exchange white for red and use Breaking / Entering as both a mill card and a steal card late game. Just some food for thought.

Sorry it took so long to get to commenting on this. Love the concept of the deck! The first thought that came to mind was that 20 lands may be a little low for a average cmc of 3.15 though. Although if your Chromatic Lantern s are doing the job then i guess it isn't an issue. Memory Plunder seems a bit expensive though to be honest, is it really worth the 4 mana? It does it with the concept of the deck well though. Love the concept though, +1 from me!

You win the internet for this! I love it, but I'm going to be honest I think Mana Leak should find a spot in here.

Wow. A ton of comments today. :D

Those are all great suggestions, but I feel like I need to focus more on the library. I have a lot of creature and graveyard focus, but not enough library. Though, Clone and Cackling Counterpart are both awesome and could do really well here. Thank you, Fal1entrixt3r. Great name to type by the way. haha

But, more on that in a bit. First, jtmorto_91 I totally agree. I'm about to put 4x Exotic Orchard in. I had some land sideboarded, and I'll probably keep it, but that will be an awesome addition. Reflecting Pool is great as well. Thaaaaank you!

I'm not sure on Infinite Reflection . It could be good, but it costs a little much. That might not be a problem if I'm stealing their mana though. Breaking / Entering is the same way. I might sideboard against a red deck. I put the other three mana types in my sideboard for when I go against a deck of that color or those colors so this deck will be different in terms of land depending on what deck I go against.

xzzane!! Thank you for descending upon us mere mortals. haha I've thought the same thing about Memory Plunder since I put it in. I keep telling myself it's okay, because I could use it to cast a big spell of theirs if I needed to. It's the only thing that gives me access to instants or sorceries that leave their library. Say they had a Cruel Ultimatum , I Undermine it, and text turn I play it with Memory Plunder .

I win the internet!? Haha thank you, sir. I truly truly appreciate that. Mana Leak is good early game but late game it is near useless. But I could sideboard it. :D

Memory Plunder is expensive you should sideboard it for decks that have instants/sorcerys that have huge effects like Cruel Ultimatum .

You could also put one more Lazav, Dimir Mastermind in here if you take out the Memory Plunder because having only one means you won't get it often and if Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver is doing enough for you I would add another.

October 10, 2013 11:46 p.m.

You could try playing Desertion , and maybe splash some white so you could play Daxos of Meletis who would fit this deck perfectly!

I agree with Resonance on this. Memory Plunder 9/10 times won't get your money's worth. You can sideboard it against those cards that would make it worth it though, and fit in some better stuff in the deck, like another Lazav, Dimir Mastermind . Also, Psychic Strike isn't worth it in my opinion. Even in pure milling decks, it isn't that good of a card. The 3 mana cost just makes it too unwieldy for my tastes. Phantasmal Image you may want to consider as well for this deck.

One thing you should keep in mind: Modern is SUCH a fast format.

I tried my hand with Esper Control, using Nephalia Drownyard as a win-condition just like Ben Stark's Standard deck. Suffice to say: It didn't work. Modern has too much Land Destruction (I cite Sowing Salt , Ghost Quarter , and Tectonic Edge as examples) to make a land a sole win condition. So I tried adding mill spells.

What you'll find is that it just doesn't work. Mill is such a fast, blitzy playstyle that trying to water it down and slow the game with cards like Psychic Strike and Thoughtseize just makes the deck want to pull into two different directions. Your mill spells want to make the game fast, but your disruption and control wants a slow, paced game.

You really don't have a whole lot of control in here, so the deck isn't too far gone. That being said, throwing 3 counters into the deck really won't help, even if they do mill in the process. Mill is good for fast games -- it can even outpace aggro decks, a lot of the time. To achieve this, you really just have to throw in plenty of efficient mill. Cards like Breaking / Entering , Tome Scour , Mind Sculpt ,Mind Funeral and Memory Sluice will ensure that you mill from turn one, and continue to mill until they're gone.

However, electing to not include all of this efficient mill for slower alternatives like Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver and Nightveil Specter will only defeat the purpose of mill, and make your deck a lot more conditional, and less consistent. You mentioned that you want the deck to exile cards that are put into graveyards as well. You can still achieve this without watering down the deck TOO much. Cards like Rest in Peace , Bojuka Bog , and Leyline of the Void allow you to ensure that all cards put into a graveyard are exiled. This is particularly useful in Modern against decks which use cards like Snapcaster Mage and decks which use lots of flashback cards.

I know how appealing the idea of a longer game with mill as a win-condition is, but it just really can't happen in Modern. You leave yourself open to Control decks getting more mana and more counters, decks being able to play Witchbane Orb effects (which entirely destroy mill decks, because you can't target them. One other important thing to note is that any deck can sideboard Witchbane Orb because it's colorless. Your deck then can be beaten by ANY opposing deck) or aggro decks being able to outpace you. It used to work in Standard, before Innistrad cycled out, but not in Modern.

Cool shell. Tried it in EDH? It is a lot of fun and quite competitive. Check out my list if your keen Lazav, Necrotic Mind Enslaver

To all that have been commenting! Ah! Thank you! I have been uber busy with work and what not. I want to let you know that I have an update for this deck, I just haven't had time to upload it with a proper update. Tomorrow, there will be a much faster version of this deck. That's thanks to Crecker2 for making me think about how fast modern actually is. I can't believe this deck has gotten so much love. It blows my mind. And just so you know, I'm only commenting what should be an update so everyone subscribed can read it. :D
