Some words:

I've thought about running Ajani, Caller of the Pride, but I've found Boros Charm for double strike coupled with something like Madcap (or Alpha Authority later on if you've loaded your creature) to be sufficient.

I still think it's a tough call between running Gift of Orzhova or Alpha Authority. Maybe I'll sideboard Gift of Orzhova.

I'll pick up some Voices of Resurgence one day. That'll run me about 140 dollars ._.' I don't think I'll ever add Elspeths to the deck but it's a viable option.

Looks pretty solid, I remember a guy making Top 4 at my shop with a similar build a while back. I might recommend getting at least a couple Gods Willing on the mainboard for additional protection and unblockable. Ready / Willing is another idea that also helps against Verdict while making a nice combat trick against creature decks. Four Chained to the Rocks main is pretty heavy considering it is a dead card against control, so you could move a couple to the side to make room.

Yeah I run Boros Charm as an answer to Verdict. I think I'll end up running Gods Willing on mainboard since it's such a nice card just for unblockable but I've been pretty successful at just trampling over things :p. Thanks for the comment.

Unfortunately, Rancor is not legal in standard. Instead of Fencing Ace, I've thought of running Fabled Hero but the problem with both of them is that they die too easily to removal.

I kinda run a similar deck called Naya AuraRush. Feel free to check it out. +1 to your deck btw.

If you plan on taking on big decks, aka control; you're going to need Ready or Rootborn Defenses to deal with Supreme Verdict or the new Fated Retribution

I ran a slightly modified version of this last night at FMN and took first. I am going to make all the mono black at my lgs main board devour flesh.

What about alpha authority? Sorry I can't link the card on my iPad. It would protect your non hex proof, and combined with madcap skills to give out of color unblockable.

Yeah after review, it works well in this iteration of the deck. Awhile back, this deck was ALL hexproof creatures so the hexproof on Alpha Authority was redundant and the combo with Madcap wasn't worth it. Since it can be dropped for 1 green onto a Hero, there's a lot more playability :p

its actually fairly easy to hit a turn three hero with alpha authority, madcap skills, and ethereal armor. Which I feel like in most cases is a turn 3 scoop for the opponent. Just food for thought.

It's been filtered out of the deck after numerous playtesting, I just found the card kind of a dead draw for the most part since it doesn't really provide any buff and requires Madcap in hand to truly be effective.

Most of the creatures in the deck are hexproof to begin with and the other enchantments in the deck are more than enough to overpower most opponents.10 cards in the deck provide trample. Also, this deck is actually quite effective at removal anyways :p Alpha Authority oftentimes becomes a waste of a 2 drop and isn't even all that great as a 1 drop with Hero out.

Maybe I would consider AA for sideboard just for Hero of Iroas against Burn and Control. From an aggro standpoint, the deck is built to go over and outrace rather than the traditional BANT-style of hurrdurr unblockable. I mean, Invisible Staker was a broken 2 drop, lol. 4 CMC to go unblockable + Creature cost (or 4 CMC total if it's on Hero) is actually not all that great; although you can pull off some hilarious combos SOMETIMES. It's not consistent enough for mainboard

I agree consistency is an issue, but a turn 3 Hero of Iroas that is first strike, unblockable, hexproof and an 11/8 is a lot of fun. You have to remember that with him auras cost one less to cast.

Hell yeah it's a lot of fun; not 'gonna deny THAT one :p

I'm not really liking Silence in the SB. I've had success with Murder Investigation , which makes control's wraths ineffective. For the mainboard, I use Flesh / Blood for removal and surprisingly ending the game quickly. Also, with the number of GR monsters, Gift of Orzhova can get damage through better than Unflinching Courage .

Silence is counter-bait and prevents Turn 4 Verdict since a) They'll be unable to play it or b) They'll counter it and not have enough mana to play it.

Blood is fun. I used to use it; it has had its moments. The problem is that it's sorcery speed and without a creature on the board, it's a dead draw. I'd rather run Mizz. Mortar as a removal and I have more than enough ways of pushing through for lethal anyways such that Blood is just overkill. Blood definitely shines against something like Mono-Blue for example. You can just hit over the line.

Double White doesn't appeal to me for Gift; that's its main drawback. Unfliching is a more optimal card since it's 1GW (easier to get out on average; most noticeable when you have Hero of Iroas out), gives a stronger buff (2 as opposed to 1), and trample + other enchants are more than sufficient to push lethal damage through.

If anything, I'd rather run copies of Ajani, Caller of the Pride if I wanted something for flying. GR Monsters hasn't been much of a problem; damage goes through as a result of the amount of removal in my deck. Courser usually ends up getting chained, Poluk. gets exiled via Selesnya or Chain, and I board in Mizz. Mortars for Stormbreath.

I havent read the comments, but I would suggest dropping the Madcap Skills and something else for play sets of Boon Satyr s and Eidolon of Countless Battles . They help give you extra protection against midrange decks that wipe the board. Also, running Boon Satyr will allow you to flash in a 4/2, which can screw up combat math, and even kill something like a brimaz.

Also, going along the route of sneeky, flashable creatures, concider Advent of the Wurm . It is an amazing G/W 4 drop that is a mistake to ignore.

+1 for being one of the better Heroic - Hero of Iroas-based decks.

March 12, 2014 12:24 a.m.

Broliver says... #24

The problem with Eidolon is that despite the fact that as a better Ethereal Armor for 3 to bestow with Hero out, it's still not the best of 3 drop available: I'd much rather bring out Unflinching Courage for lifelink + trample and then do a really hard T4 push with a combat trick like B-Charm (and Ghor-Clan). I also do not care for the double white cost; I have more forest symbols anyway. I've tried Eidolon but meh.

Advent of the Wurm is a good instant and I used it in a G/W deck. I definitely like it, but it doesn't fit. Boon Satyr fills multiple roles on the other hand, however. I'll consider him for sideboard.
