Sorcery (1)

Dimir mill heavily focused on mill spells and allows for an alternative aggro win condition. This deck is capable of milling your opponent quickly, and offers enough alternate spells to stay alive while doing so.

COMBOS

  • Hedron Crab + Oboro, Palace in the Clouds
One or two crabs are capable of miiling a surprising portion of your opponent's library on their own. Oboro, Palace in the Clouds allows us to abuse their landfall trigger by returning it to our hands whenever we don't have a land to drop.

  • A turn one Jace's Phantasm followed by a turn two Glimpse the Unthinkable gives you a 5/5 flying Illusion that can be difficult to stop early game. It's not uncommon to win on the heels of the phantasm alone. A playset of both is easy to justify as this combo can be very devastating. Not only do you have a large early threat but you've milled a huge chunk of your opponent's deck in the process!

MILLING

"The soul is only as eternal as I say it is."
---Sharuum the Hegemon

  • Glimpse the Unthinkable
This card was the inspiration for the deck and is the best mill card for the mana cost.

  • Archive Trap
One of my personal favorites. You'll use this most of the time in response to an opponent cracking a fetch.

  • Breaking / Entering
A slightly weaker Glimpse the Unthinkable, but good for the CMC nonetheless.

  • Mind Funeral
This card can hit decks with a low mana count hard. Punishes decks that like to fetch thier lands from the library. Can dump large portions of the opponent's library at a time or as little as 4 measly lands. Keeping track of the land count your opponent has on the board and in their graveyard is vital to maximizing the effect of this card.

  • Mesmeric Orb
An absolute powerhouse here. The effect will slow our opponents making them think twice about each spell they want to cast, or each creature they want to attack with. Also gets around cards like Leyline of Sanctity, and Blood Moon, since it's not picky about the mana used to cast it.

  • Hedron Crab
An all star in this build. Not only can we abuse it with Oboro, but we can abuse it with the fetch lands we run in here as well. Dropping one to trigger the landfall, then fetching to trigger a second landfall.

  • Manic Scribe
The newest gift to this deck from recent sets. We actually fill up our library easily using Mesmeric Orb, allowing constant Delirium triggers. Another reason I'm a fan of this card is it's Delirium effect isn't a targeted effect. Allowing it to get around Leyline of Sanctity.

SUPPORT SPELLS

"Why build a bridge that needs to be guarded?"
---Elvish Champion

  • Visions of Beyond
I love seeing this card late game to let me dig for the cards i'll need to put the game away. Works in perfect unison with milling.

  • Crypt Incursion
While mostly useless against infect and control, this card is a powerhouse against creature heavy aggro builds. Often being used late game just as the opponent attacks for lethal, granting you not only a large chunk of health, but valuable time to continue assaulting their library.

  • Ensnaring Bridge
We can actually empty out hand quickly making this a powerful delay option. A lot of times this can end the game on the spot once it resolves.

  • Jace's Phantasm
Winning through Aggro isn't our primary goal, but once this creature becomes a 5/5 flier, it's not hard to do. This can begin swinging for 5 damage per turn as early as turn 2!

MURKY WATERS
"Some see a coastal disaster. I see a fully-stocked seagraf."
---Jadar, ghoulcaller of Nephalia

  • Shelldock Isle The truly beautiful component of this card is that the spell you dig for can be played at instant speed! This is truly awesome when most mill spells are sorcery spells. Also reduces the casting cost of the facedown spell allowing you to be more loose with your mana while waiting for the perfect time to flip it. Combos well with Crypt Incursion.

  • Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
    Helps with mana fixing.

  • Nephalia Drownyard
A mana Sink to keep the pressure on.

  • Oboro, Palace in the Clouds
Another outlet to keep applying pressure with Hedron Crab's Landfall ability.

  • Darkslick Shores
A good land to help us gain early game access to the colors we need for spellcasting without stinging ourselves from a shockland.

We round out the mana base with 3 copies of Watery Grave, and 7 fetchlands to quickly thin our own library to pull more frequent mill spells, and fix our mana base, along with pulling double duty with Hedron Crab's Landfall trigger.

SIDEBOARD

  • Hurkyl's Recall
Our best answer against Affinity. Still only usually buys us an extra turn.

  • Relic of Progenitus
Used mainly against graveyard strategies. We can actually help them buy playing our deck normally. This is our best insurance against them. Moslty want to side these in while bringing out Crypt Incursion to prevent them working against each other.

  • Sun Droplet
We want to side this in against burn.

  • Surgical Extraction
An absolute beast of a card, and works great when you're dumping large portions of your opponent's library into their graveyard, granting you a lot of potential targets, while seeing their hand, and allowing you to check the type of deck they're using to prevent surprises. Can kill combo decks on the spot by removing cards necessary to combo off.

  • Tome Scour
This is mainly just a filler for any cards we side out of the mainboard that are proving ineffective.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

  • Snapcaster Mage
This is usually a no brainer in a blue control build. But here we actually already mill quite consistently so I didn't feel this was needed over Manic Scribe .

  • Mind Grind
Really good in multiplayer, but overall less effective 1v1 than Mind Funeral.

  • Nemesis of Reason
A big body that keeps up both mill and aggro pressure seems great, and it is. I just found myself wanting other spells more often than not.
