Considerations for combo-piece tier:

  • Number of pieces in combo. Fewer combo pieces are better.
  • Number of combos for piece. The more combos that a piece enables, the better.
  • Resiliency of combo. A combo with redundant pieces is good. If a piece is removed, hope is not lost.
  • Speed of combo. A combo that can function at instant speed is more resilient than a sorcery speed combo or a combo that needs to wait a full turn cycle, e.g. summoning sickness or resolving an upkeep trigger.
  • Commander-driven. A combo that utilizes the commanders instead of cards in the 99 will usually be easier to put together.
  • Tutor-ability. A combo piece is more valuable if it can be effectively tutored. In this case, typically creatures, artifacts, and blue instants are most tutor-able.
  • Utility outside of combo. A combo piece is more valuable if it is useful even when not being used in a combo.
  • Cheap. Lower CMC makes it easier to put together multiple combo pieces in a single turn or to combo off earlier.
