Commander / EDH* Competitive Midrange Multiplayer RBW (Mardu) Vampires

McDeity

This list used to be Rakdos Vampires, with Olivia Voldaren at the helm. However, with the printing of Edgar Markov, the tribe now gets some much needed support. Transitioning from Red/Black to Mardu enables far tidier enchantment removal, and a few other decent cards. There is a cost to this improvement, however. In the past, Olivia's combination pinging ability and her mind control allowed a lighter removal suite in addition to gaining win-cons from other players. To augment and protect her borrowed vassals meant running a sacrificial sub-theme (which many vampires are quite good at) replete with Grave Pact & Friends. Some sac-outlets are still good to have around (after all, she is still in the deck), but they now play a value role rather than a vital line of defense. Blood Artist and other such effects lost much of their luster in this transition. Vampires that remove opposing creatures all had their stock go up to help cover the openings left by the former crew. So why bother changing? Edgar is the general that vampire-tribal has needed. Thematically caring about other creatures of the same tribe in addition to churning out an appropriate army are big gains if the goal is to play a deck that feels like vampires. Some games with Olivia just felt like playing Olivia: the Gathering. As mentioned above, not having to run suspect cards such as Unstable Obelisk and Oblivion Stone to handle things like Humility makes the deck feel much better to play. Nobody likes making the right play when the right play feels like garbage. Now the deck can run things like Merciless Eviction, Vindicate, and Utter End. Not only are they just way better cards which give you a strong sense of agency- they also are black cards, which matters. What else does the deck gain from white? Well, most Sorins, which is flavorful, if not always the most functional. Also some solid enchantments that black has no analog for (Cathars' Crusade). Astute readers will note that some of White's best cards are missing from the deck, however. No Swords to Plowshares, Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, nor Avacyn, Angel of Hope or Austere Command, etc. Mostly, this is because Black has similar replacement effects without having to run non-black cards, even if they're a half-step behind. The focus on Black cards, of course, is for Vampire Nocturnus. Great balls of fire- when that guy can reliably buff the team, it feels like you can't lose (DISCLAIMER: you still can). The deck has typical vampire combos included, but they are neither necessary, nor the primary means of winning. Mundane as it may be, turning a large field sideways is still the most common route to victory. Again, the patriarch and progenitor Markov puts in yeoman's work pumping out dudes to help meet that goal. Like Vampire Nocturnus, he warps deck construction: Jam more vampires. Edgar can't work his magic if the deck is filled with non-vampiric draws. Luckily, there are heaps of reasonable vampires, almost all of which are Black! A few other notes for now: there is a minor discard theme to assist Asylum Visitor, but it doesn't take up much space, as getting the table hellbent is something worth doing in general. One card has survived all incarnations of the deck, despite not being particularly strong-Baron Sengir. I'm rarely described as sentimental, but here I make an allowance- he's the original Edgar, from the original Innistrad! Plus, who isn't interested in keeping track of both +1/+1 counters and +2/+2? (Sane people, probably).

The 'best of the rest' in terms of vampires are:

Guul Draz Assassin--Slow to level up.

Sangromancer--Negligible effect at the moment

Soul Collector/Krovikan Vampire (That Art on Krovikan!)--would require Arena or the like to make work.

Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter--Being expensive and requiring fodder is a bad mix

Blood Artist/Falkenrath Noble--rely on a heavier sacrificing focus

Cliffhaven Vampire--combos, but is just an extra 'part A' of the Sanguine Bond combo. If/when more Exquisite Bloods other than Guildmage see print, then I'll reconsider.

Updates Add

Ruthless Lawbringer looks excellent. Vindicate may be the weakest? How often do I blow up lands?

Olivia, Opulent Outlaw doesn’t have enough other Outlaws to trigger.

No lands immediately stand out.

From prior sets, Sanguine Evangelist, possibly March of the Canonized, possibly Clavileno, First of the Blessed hang around the edges of the deck.

Can this deck actually cast RRR City on Fire?

Monitor Jet Medallion to see how often it actually allows double-spelling on a turn versus just being a 2-drop rock.
