Bad luck and sideboarding issues — 1-3 —Aug. 5, 2019
I took the 8-Ball out for another spin, but I had some pretty piss poor luck on a lot of my draws. Still made every match to at least one win except the last, but I ended up 1-3 at the end of the evening. Played against a lot of red—my matches were: Izzet phoenix (1-2), Boros burn (2-1), Urza/Thopter/Sword of the Meek (1-2) Rakdos goblins (0-2). The goblins deck was furious and I was stuck on two mountains the first game, and drew no spells from two Faithless Lootings the second. But I did make two turn-3 kills and generally every time I lost my opp was at 5 life or under, so I feel like I'm getting really close to figuring it out.
I ended up swapping the Blightnings for Dreadbores as I've been seeing a lot more creatures/planeswalkers I have trouble with at these nights. Between those, bolts, and CoBru it feels like a solid block of disruption. Rakdos Charm felt really good out of the sideboard, and Thoughtseize hit a few things that would've been troublesome, but other than those there were a lot of points my SBing didn't make an impact.
I'll probably go up to 4 Unearth in the main and move two CoBru to the side, as I found a few times the first mode was hitting opps with only creatures or artifacts and wound up not making as much of an impact. I subbed in the elemental lords for the goblins game but they didn't even see the table, and other than that matchup I haven't used them at all, so it may be better to axe them in favor of better versatile tools. I'm also wondering of the Chandra, Acolyte of Flames are worth it, as whenever they're in my hand I have to choose between whatever value I might gain from her vs. smashing in with a 6/1. I think going up to 4 Unearth may give her more value, so I'll keep 3-mana Chandra in for now. My other thought is to remove Tormenting Voice entirely in favor of Ransack the Lab and a 4th Chandra.
