Maybeboard

When I saw Archangel of Thune in the M14 spoilers, I fell in love. This is a mid-ranged deck based around exploiting her triggered ability while making good use of the graveyard.

This is likely to be added to my ever-growing list of Standard-legal FNM decks.

SIDEBOARD REASONING:

Blind Obedience - Low mana cost, slows down hyper-aggro (red haste decks) and gives me and extort trigger.

Thoughtseize - Sideboarded in mainly against Esper to clue me in as to what removal/counter spells they have in hand and also to get rid of them. Can also be used against instant/sorcery/artifact/enchantment - heavy decks.

Underworld Connections - For when extra card draw is needed. I am tempted to put this in the mainboard (since the life cost for extra card draw is usually countered by the life gain I have), but I'm not sure what to switch it with.

Pithing Needle - Standard hate against any activated abilities. This includes Planeswalkers and special lands (EG. Nephalia Drownyard ).

Sundering Growth - Extra removal for artifacts/enchantments that can also add an extra token to the field if I have Selesnya Charm up.

Golgari Charm - Added this in since all 3 of its effects are beneficial, but very situational. -1/-1 can be used against chump token decks, extra enchant removal is very relevent in this format and regenerating all creatures is a god-send against Supreme Verdict and Anger of the Gods

Revoke Existence - Anti-God card.

MAYBEBOARD CONSIDERATIONS:

Celestial Flare - Good removal that gets around indestructibility, but gives my opponent a choice of what they sac.

Doom Blade - More cheap removal. Not sure if adding this in would give me too much removal.

Putrefy - Only considering this for the 'No-regeneration' clause. I'm currently running cheaper removal for creatures and artifacts.

Unflinching Courage - In my opinion, one of the best Auras in Standard at the moment. However, not sure if the lifelink that this gives is relevant with the other life gain triggers I have.

All comments and criticisms are appreciated. I'm especially looking for some opinions on the Sideboard and Maybeboard cards.

So I finally had a chance to play this deck and get a feel for how it plays, however I ended up going 1 win 3 losses.

0-2 vs B/W/R Aristocrats. Both games were lost due to my opponent simply having more flyers available with Lingering Souls and Falkenrath Aristocrat. Thankfully I never saw any Boros Reckoner Blood Artist or Blasphemous Acts and I was able to keep up with the Cartel Aristocrat and vampire tokens on the field. Sideboarded in Golgari Charm for the -1/-1 to all creatures and Blind Obedience to slow down the Falkenrath.

2-0 vs Golgari. This was a fairly easy match-up. My opponent was all about abusing their graveyard and I was able to get Scavenging Ooze out turn 2 on both games. Game 2 I was able to get a turn 6 Archangel of Thune and the fun really began when Scavenging Ooze went out of control. Didn't sideboard anything for these games.

1-2 vs Mono-green elves. This was a pretty crazy deck. First few turns, my opponent was just throwing out small mana dorks liks Arbor Elf and Deathrite Shaman. Next came the Elvish Archdruid and Door of Destinies. Finally, in came the Craterhoof Behemoth and my subsequent scoop. 2nd game was a little better. I was able to remove the Elvish Archdruid with Abrupt Decay and stabilized with Fiendslayer Paladin and a turn 5 Obzedat, Ghost Counil. Managed to win this game by bleeding my opponent out. Third game was essentially a repeat of the first, with Craterhoof Behemoth and a bunch of steroid elves smacking me in the face. Sided in Blind Obedience Golgari Charm and Sundering Growth to deal with Craterhoof, mana dorks and Door of Destinies respectively.

1-2 vs Selesnya tokens. First game went fair smoothly. My opponent wasn't able to get more than 1 token out at a time and I simply ran over them with Scavenging Ooze. 2nd and 3rd games demonstrated what I feared with this deck and showed me just how color screwed I can get. I kept 3-land hands both games. Both games ended by turn 12 where I still only had 3 lands (all Overgrown Tombfoil) and a hand full of white cards. My opponent knew this and ended up using Cathars' Crusade Archangel of Thune and Healer of the Pride to super-pump his creatures before dealings a whopping 67 damage in one hit. I sided in 2 Glaring Spotlight since my opponent showed that he had Gladecover Scout and Witchstalker.

Conclusions: As I feared, the double white cost on some cards and slowness of the deck screwed me a bit. Dryad Militant didn't seem to do anything in any of the games so I have moved them in place of Avacyn's Pilgrim. If nothing else, a turn 4 Archangel of Thune is awesome. I've also taken Woodland Cemetery down to 3 and Fiendslayer Paladin down to 3 and added 2 Doom Blade to fatties outside of Abrupt Decay range.
