Tibalt's Redemption: Miracle or Madness?

So, Tibalt. Why would I play on of if not the worst plainswalkers in MTG? After cruising through youtube I came across a video detailing how bad of a card Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded is but how he is actually the villain the series needed. Either way I thought there must be a way to redeem Tibalt, even if its only marginally. I just wanted to play a deck with him in it.

First lets take a look at Tibalt's ability's.

  • +1: Draw a card, then discard a card at random.

  • −4: Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded deals damage equal to the number of cards in target player's hand to that player.

  • −6: Gain control of all creatures until end of turn. Untap them. They gain haste until end of turn.

His first ability is the main one we are going to focus on in this deck since most of the cards we have in here have madness. This will let us play any of these cards we are discarding for a lower cost but for the same effect.

His second ability is useful against decks with lots of draw effect and immediately after you've cast Reforge the Soul just to throw some easy damage at your opponent. Although this may cause you to kill off Tibalt, don't worry he only costs 2 to cast and we have 4 of him in the deck.

His last ability is less likely to be played during a match but if you ever get it that far it will give you the opportunity to take control of all of your opponents creatures and get a free swing for some big damage. After you get your free swing you can also sacrifice three of them and cause Voldaren Pariah   to transform.

So now that you see how the interactions are set up to work with Tibalt in the deck, lets see what else we can do. One of the big utilities in here is Risk Factor since it offers the opportunity to draw more cards or do damage to your opponent. It also has the side benefit off allowing us to play it again with its Jumpstart mechanic and discard a card to trigger a Madness casting cost.

Liliana Vess is here to help us with discard and alternatively dig into our library to find a card and put it on top of the library... like Reforge the Soul which you can then cast for its Miracle cost thanks to Tormenting Voice refilling your hand and setting up Tibalt's second ability for your next turn.

Next we have Pyromancer Ascension. Why? because we have been discarding cards and now we can double up on triggers for all of our damage based cards Lightning Bolt, Fiery Temper, and Lightning Bolt. Alternatively it will help with draw effect through Risk Factor and Tormenting Voice

Basically the sideboard focuses on bulk creature removal. We are going to do this with Sweltering Suns, Killing Wave, and Bonfire of the Damned. I also tossed in a few extra copies of Lightning Bolt and Pyromancer Ascension. And just for good measure Gurmag Angler since we are going to end up with a big graveyard fairly quickly anyway, we might as well feed it to a big fishy boy.

So thats it. Tibalt's Redemption: Miracle or Madness? It's not going to win you a GP but it should be fun to watch people get confused by the concept of seeing Tibalt on the battlefield doing nothing of any real use, but that's the real reason I called it "Miracle or Madness?".
