Timmy's Animar EDH

Commander / EDH

Alandrix

This is a battlecruiser-style comboless Animar deck. I find this deck very fun to play, although I am an unrepentant Gruul mage that really just wants to play huge creatures and hit people in the face.

As always, this deck is a work in progress. Suggestions are always appreciated :).

Upgrading this deck:

If I had more money to spend, I think the biggest upgrades this deck could get would be filter lands. Flooded Grove, Fire-Lit Thicket, and Cascade Bluffs would help the fixing a lot. This deck wants a LOT of colored mana. If you add a bunch of fetches, Lotus Cobra should really go in too. Also, Bloom Tender is a very good card.

The only reason there isn't a Cyclonic Rift in this deck is because I'm stubborn and I like having all permanents.

Budgeting this deck:

If you cut the most expensive cards out of this list, you lose the most in the mana-base and in the high CMC stuff. Fortunately, a lot of the high-synergy cards are not that expensive.

For the mana base, I recommend Gruul Turf, Izzet Boilerworks, and Simic Growth Chamber, which I only cut very recently. Obviously there are many lands that come into play tapped that are also options. Cards like Joiner Adept get a lot better, and you can also consider running more creatures that get lands, like Yavimaya Elder or even Ondu Giant.

For big creatures, there are plenty of fun options. Hamletback Goliath is a classic for multiplayer, as is Hydra Omnivore. There are some nice hydras that aren't too expensive. Hooded Hydra in particular does double duty as a low-drop or a mana-sink, whichever you need at the moment. Phyrexian Ingester is great, and Spearbreaker Behemoth has a lot of great utility. Inkwell Leviathan is very hard to kill. I'm also fond of Archetype of Imagination and Brawn for extra punching power.

Losing the haste you get from Maelstrom Wanderer, Urabrask the Hidden, and Craterhoof Behemoth is quite painful, so you might want to consider cards like Fires of Yavimaya. Yeva, Nature's Herald can play a similar role, letting you play creatures right before your turn so that your opponents have less time to react before you swing.
