To the person who said the Star City Games invitational Top 8's from the last six months are all Jace decks, firstly, there's only one invitational every six months, and exactly six months ago it was won by Gerry Thompson's Valakut. And this most recent event had Patrick Sullivan in 8th place with Red Deck Wins.

The only reason the Mystics are up there is because of caw blade.

The number one card is definitely the Mindsculptor. Changes the game state as soon as he hits the field.

I want to try to avoid some of the obvious, so:

  1. Goblin Bushwhacker
  2. Vampire Hexmage
  3. Quest for the Holy Relic
  4. Dispatch
  5. Overgrown Battlement
These are pretty underrated, but still some of my favorites.

2.Lightning Bolt -greatest burn spell of all time.

3.Vault Skirge -beats both Doom Blade and Go for the Throat .

4.card:Ajani's Pridemate-soul sister's is standard again.

5.Vampire Hexmage -anti planeswalker, enough said.

I didn't mean Invitational - my bad.

I said "Invitational," but was thinking "Open Series".

Jace, the Mind Sculptor is the best card in Standard. That's why his cost is down to $80 from $100~$110, only because he'll be cycling soon. Mind you, he'll stay above $50 for the rest of time due to his popularity in Legacy.

Valakut is still very relevant in my local meta. Also, check out the MTG:O daily standard events. Valakut still appears frequently.

Ok this is my top five, I'm not listing them just because "since [] is there, this card is awesome." My list is based on their strengths alone (and it doesn't have to be pure power, it also is their usefulness.)

1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor

I really don't understand why people say Stoneforge Mystic is better than this, there are few decks in standard that don't play him, and they have good reason to. This man shaped a format.

2 Phyrexian Metamorph

This is one of those cards, like Inquisition of Kozilek , it might take a while to spread, but realize how many things this turns into, and what you can do with it. With him, you will copy a bomb like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn , Batterskull , Blightsteel Colossus , and more. If nothing better comes out before October, this is my #1. (Remember, it plays in any color deck.)

3 Lightning Bolt

The classic burn spell, if you are in bolt range, you aren't quite good enough.

4 Lotus Cobra

I've seen this guy used in so many different green decks its not even funny, he is an engine that you don't even have to build around for him to work.

5 Consecrated Sphinx

'nuff said.

Sure, everyone else go ahead and put Caw-Blade, Caw-Blade and what was that other one? oh yeah, Caw-Blade. This whole list just makes me want to switch the title to "Top 100 decks in standard." because cards just end up being which cards make up the best deck in the format, leaving other cards underappreciated. I mean come on, anyone remember the last time they top-decked a lightning bolt when they really needed it?

Also, I think this would have a much better turnout if it was limited to only commons and uncommons, because of course people will pick mythics and rares for their tops. Lets try ones that aren't obvious, because WotC made them rares for a reason people.

BTW, you wouldn't want to use Phyrexian Metamorph on Emrakul, the Aeons Torn - He's Legendary. You don't even get the extra turn bonus, since you have to cast Emrakul in order to get it. Phyrexian Metamorph would already have to be Emrakul in your hand to get the extra turn.

Balthasar says... #16

I'd copy emrakul in a heartbeat with the metamorph- it kills him. :)

You should see the look on the face of a person when the summoning trap emrakul or hard cast it and you flash out either the gargantuan or the metamorph using shimmer myr or the leyline, and kill him XD

Updated, now had 81 cards.

June 9, 2011 11:47 p.m.

Ok, but the last open series was won by Vampires ;) Caw-Blade is the best deck out there, but it is far from complete dominance. There are other strategies that pay dividends if you just critically think about the metagame.

Sorry to tell you this, but Standard is the worst format magic has to offer.

June 9, 2011 11:57 p.m.

cxcharlie says... #24

Everyone knows that standard is the worst format, but the best cards are kinda obvious. Black Lotus and all that other stuff is not really a surprise.

HammerAndSickled, this deck is by votes, I didn't choose these. I would have chosen Jace, the Mind Sculptor for first but the majority has voted Stoneforge Mystic .
