Lathril, Blade of the Elves

"Lathril hails from ancient times, before the elven race was split in two, and represents the apex of elven glory. She was a natural leader and master tactician whose prowess kept the elves in a place of power for eons. Unafraid to wade into the battle personally, she often fought at the head of her forces, dealing death in all directions and rallying her troops to turn even crushing defeat into defiant victory. 'Lathril's Chant,' a favorite tale among the elves, tells of Lathril's birth, deeds, and later ascent to godhood after her battle with a mysterious cosmos monster called 'Eidermaw.' Some elves believe that her consciousness lingers in one of the Jaspera trees and pray to her faithfully in anticipation of the return of the Einir, the elven gods who could unite the wood and shadow elves once again."

This deck probably isn't nearly as optimized as it probably could be, I'm intentionally foregoing the obvious win conditions like Craterhoof Behemoth and Triumph of the Hordes (edit, Triumph has been added because funny Fortnite card :) ). As much as I want to run them, I'd like to both keep more on flavor and be a bit more unique with the deck. In an Elfball deck like this, I can respect the "out of nowhere" wins but I'd much rather just overrun with a swarm of pumped-up elves or with a mighty Lathril leading a powerful charge (commander damage) or setting up an elaborate ambush (activated ability).

Depending on the meta, there are a handful of cards in the sideboard which might be worth putting into the deck. If you feel like having fun, feel free to cut something for Fynn, the Fangbearer and go for a win using one of the multiple deathtouch-providing effects. If your meta runs a lot of low cost creatures, or you're worried about them ramping out of control through mana rocks and dorks themselves, cut something for Culling Ritual and keep them in check. If you've got your own powerhouse cards, like Gaea's Cradle or Growing Rites of Itlimoc   then by all means slot them in if you build this deck yourself! This might be my personal decklist, but anybody is welcome to take interest in it and make their own adjustments (and/or throw suggestions into the comments)!

There aren't any complicated combos or anything, just general Elf tribal synergy, just as Elfball is meant to be. Make a bunch of mana, make a bunch of tokens, and turn sideways. There are, however, a few notable combos worth keeping in mind as you play the deck, including:

  • Cabal Coffers + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth - This is a combo run in almost every deck running black ever. All your lands are now swamps thanks to Urborg, so the Coffers can produce dumb amounts of mana.
  • Elvish Champion + Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth - There is no Cabal Coffers equivalent to Forests (that is legal, at least), but this combo cares more about turning your opponents' lands into forests. With all your Elves getting Forestwalk, your army is now unblockable.
  • Immaculate Magistrate + Joraga Warcaller - If you're the type to like putting all your eggs in one basket, rather than dumping counters onto individual elves you can dump counters specifically onto the Warcaller to pump your entire team by ridiculous amounts (the Warcaller just looks at the number of +1/+1 counters on itself, the static ability that pumps your other elves doesn't care about how many times it was kicked). Just make sure you can keep the Warcaller protected.
  • Immaculate Magistrate + Marwyn, the Nurturer - Similar to the combo with Joraga Warcaller, the Magistrate has the potential to dump a silly amount of counters onto Marwyn so she can tap for silly amounts of green mana. Marwyn usually doesn't have trouble getting out of hand, but this is just a fast forward button.
  • Alpha Authority + Lathril, Blade of the Elves - The Authority states that the creature cannot be blocked by more than one creature. So, if said creature has a particular keyword which requires them to be blocked by multiple creatures if they are to be blocked at all, then said creature is effectively unblockable. And wouldn't you know, Lathril has a keyword which says just that, and already really wants to turn sideways at people!
