would you mind if I asked you to look at one of my "different" decks? I like the way you build, and am always looking for more eyes to weigh in.

From the grave my knights will arise. HAIL HAAKON!.

Sure, I'll look in to it tomorrow.

I really like this deck; I've been trying to put together a decent modern Treefolk deck for two years, and have tried to resist going multicolored. After seeing what you've done here, I think I'm sold on abandoning its monogreen aspect.

Any thoughts about moving Heartwood Storyteller in for your two Sapling of Colfenor? There are tradeoffs, for sure, but I've found that Heartwood Storyteller is better for card draw, and you're not playing that many noncreature spells where this would significantly help an opponent.

I understand your rationale for Wall of Roots, but have you found that it hurts your ability to ramp? I have Llanowar Elves (for now, but likely to be replaced with Birds of Paradise), and I'd be concerned that this card would need until T3 to start having an impact (unless there's another Treefolk Harbinger to put out T2, assuming Wall of Roots goes out T2, instead of Bosk Banneret.

@GreatScots: Thanks for the kind words and it's cool it's had impact in your treeman build! So for Heartwood Storyteller. it was initially in the deck for quite a long time, but its suscepticity (or whatever the word is) for removal is just so much worse, I wouldn't compare the two. But for Storyteller in general I can't find room for it no matter how sweet its effect is. I've tried it but the top tier is brutal.

Wall of Roots hardly ever is a means of pushing something out early, if not Treefolk Harbinger like you said, which is a pretty damn neat feature on it's own, I wouldn't underestimate picking your turn 3 draw. Birds of Paradise is a really nice card, like a lot of other ramp creatures too, but Roots just somehow has saved me and been my one needed mana that isnt removed that easily, for so many games, that it really grew on me for many reasons. Can't really explain it otherwise but it will remain my sole ramp creature. Thank you for your time and paste your Treefolk deck when you finish your list! I'm hyped :)

Okay, I can't argue with experience. I haven't had the same experience with Heartwood Storyteller, but it's something I'll keep in mind going forward. Good to know about Wall of Roots.

GreatScots: Not by any means a mean it's a bad card, but I would'nt necessarily try to find impactful enough role with the superior draw engines I have working here now. But in a more aggroish version it can be a superstar (Like it actually was in this decks early stages until I got schooled on it later :) Dont sack it yet!

I've been tweaking my junk trees and found two cards that seemed interesting Armadillo Cloak, Bonds of Mortality, Vault of the Archangel, what do you think??

November 8, 2016 7:33 p.m.

kl0Ze says... #9

3 cards my bad...the cloak is primarily for dungrove which will give him something that he desperately needs (trample) and the life gain is a huge bonus. Bonds of immortality can help you deal with those annoying hexproof angels or creatures in popular decks. Vault can be a surprise and can turn the tables unexpectedly.

Beastcaller Savant can be a good option replacement for wall of roots. He can be casted for free, instant mana casting of your choice. But its gonna lower your defensive line.

Authority of the Consuls, found an anti aggro card that can save you some time to set up and win the race.

November 8, 2016 8:48 p.m.

Naksu says... #12

@kl0Ze: None of the first three really fit the deck. I SB Bonds of Mortality in some decks, but here the effects on enemies ain't something I worry about. Noncreatures are a questionmark always when I try to see wheter theres a place for a card X, and this time they just won't cut it, though they are nice cards nevertheless. Vault of the Archangel I've been thinking for some other deck some time ago and when thinking of it here, I just can't find a land that doesn't already serve an important purpose from fixing colors to buff Dungrove + Dauntless and the added effects doesnt really add anything here, except the life link is nice, just not nice anough :p.

After purchasing two playsets forest fetching lands, I've had zero mana fix problems, so Wall of Roots will remain the sole mana creature for its so many more puproses on this decks synergies.

Authority of the Consuls On the otherhand looks like something I really want to playtest for SB, that looks might fine sir! Thanks again :)

No problem. Anything to help bring the trees to become competitive. One question tho, what are your sideboard moves with popular decks you have faced?

kl0Ze says... #14

Do you think Sensei's Divining Top and Congregation at Dawn would work for this deck?

November 11, 2016 4:05 p.m.

kl0Ze says... #15

Scratch sensei out...my bad

November 11, 2016 4:07 p.m.

Naksu says... #16

kl0Ze: Sensei as you said is an overkill on the mechanic and would just hinder the actual synergies in most cases. I've tried it. But Congregation at Dawn actually looks kind of promising, I have to test it out oo! :)

As for sideboarding, it would take a lot of space of text to explain it all, but I'll give a short version.

  • Dredge: Swap all Thorn of Amethyst with Relic of Progenitus

  • Affinity: Swap all amethysts again, and Ghost Quarters cause of Darksteel Citadel for the optimal choises in your SB artifact removal and then race.

  • Bant: Always so diverse, cause bant can build some surprising stuff.

  • Jund: Is a hard SB for me atleast, cause it has so many mechanics to look out for and then you try to SB accordingly. Sometimes they are heavy on the zoo aspect and sometimes trust in alot of burn and removal, but usually run Planeswalkers so 2 Hero's Downfalls over 2 Thorn of Amethysts, Which leaves 1 amethyst and one Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. But still Jund decks are close to be the most similar to my Folk playstyle so it's always a tough race that I usually win :D.

  • Burn: I don't SB much against burn since my main is almost designed for against it. It's the other way around, that they almost always try round two with SB changes and still loses 2-0. I tried Dragon's Claw for a while, but it just worked as a BM card :p.

  • Infect: Drown in Sorrow has probably been the best against it, but I have much less than 40% winrate against infect with this. So sideboard might use some good suggestions against infect decks!

  • Abzan: Like this deck is uncovered at the first game, and pretty much only aftert that you can start figuring your mulligans against his strong points.

  • Living End: Relic of Progenitus.

I usually swap out the Amethysts, cause they have a purpose in the main, and zoo decks just straight up ignores the effect, but mostly people play decks with lots of spell shenanigans, so I think that this build auto counters alot of deck on the first game, but after mulligans I tend to lose cause I don't always know how to respond and use my SB to the fullest.

For Burn I would Sideboard Leyline of Sanctity because them not being able to target you is bonkers and against Jund it takes out discard options. Maybe Gutshot against Infect?

November 12, 2016 4:13 p.m.

Naksu says... #18

@hunkers: Leyline of Sanctity is already in the maybe board till I find room for it and Gut Shot looks really nice, though infect has been really rare so I wont invest much in countering it, but will move that to the maybeboard for future references, thank you.

I'm working on Treefolk too, really hoping it becomes a real deck.

My version is still much more budget so I don't have the fetches, which is a shame as they do so much for leaf crowned and Colfenor.

In my version I'm running Nameless Inversion along with the Crib Swaps to round out the removal package.

I'm also running 4 Llanowar Augur and 4 Gilt-Leaf Palace, the Augur is a 3/3 for 1G with Doran out, is a shaman, and can give trample and buff when you need to punch a big guy through. The Gilt-Leaf Palace usually plays untapped because of the Augurs and changeling instants, but it's still just a budget option and fetches + shocks are much better.

The thing about the Llanowar Augurs is how explosive they can make a turn 3 Doran, if we play any combination of 3 harbingers + augurs on turn 1 and 2 we can swing for 9 on turn 3, then sac the augur on turn 4 to punch through with 8/8 Doran. I think the card is really perfect for treefolk and should be tried in a competitive version with fetches and so on.

Against non creature matchups I'm boarding out my removals and boarding in Heartwood Storyteller, along with any specific hate for that deck of course, making our deck almost all creatures and all cards in their decks draws cards for us. Not sure how good this is but it certainly counters 8-rack well and makes control less painful.

Sjorpha: Hey man, glad to see another forest dweller and I can't see why it couldn't become one. I've had alot of fun and crushing victories against top tier decks @ mtg:o, so it definately can :)

The fetches are just insane with the folks, so I strongly recommend in investing in atleast 5 cheapest forest fetches.

Heartwood Storyteller was in my original list but didn't make the cut and Nameless Inversion can be good but also didnt have enough impact. Both great cards though. The Augur Palace looks interesting :)

This deck is most vulnerable to Bolt, Path to Exile, Living End and land hate. Atleast thats what I struggle with most.

November 25, 2016 10:17 a.m.

Sjorpha says... #21

Naksu I haven't found bolt a problem, I'm usually ok with trading the 0/3s for a bolt, the harbinger does it's job on casting so having it bolted is not a bad trade.

But I agree with the others. It's hard to deal with creatureless and combo decks too in my experience.

One strength I've noticed is the ability to attack through ensnaring bridge with all the 0/X creatures and Doran, another time where the Augur comes in handy. So the matchup against lantern control and Skred is not bad.

But how do we interact against things like Ad Nauseum, what is our out versus pillow fort?

I think it would be good to look at some kind of maindeck interaction versus non-creature strategies, or maybe it's better to just race them. Dunno.

November 30, 2016 4:44 a.m.

Naksu says... #22

Sjorpha: Bosk Banneret getting bolted usually results in a loss if I don't draw another fast enough.

I used to run Extirpate against Ad Nauseam, even though it doesnt exactly counter it, but it's been such a rare deck to run against so I swapped it out. It will likely find it's way back if Ad or storm decks start rising again.

Against pillows it's pretty much a race with me hopefully throwing out Thorn of Amethyst or Thalia, Guardian of Thraben soon enough. Also you side in Nature's Claim and hope two is enough for sphere of safetys and ghostly prisons.

Hell Yeah Tribal Treefolk! Makes me want to build one too! I love Tribal stuff. I had a tribal Minotaur deck in standard back when and everyone was caught off guard. went 4-0 a couple times with it. This list looks great and surprising! +1 for sure

I've played Boros minotaurs too, it could also be super aggressive and snowballed fast. Building a Treefolk deck doesn't get cheap no matter how budget you try to do it, so be warned :D
