Trelasarra teaches self-worth

Commander / EDH GW (Selesnya)

AntareElAmore

Your steps echo through the stone, pitch-black corridors of the Underdark. The air slowly becomes heavier by the step and your legs begin to ache, refusing to move as the pain in your torso burns harder than ever before. The cackling aberrations don't seem to be closer, but those noses didn't lie: they follow the trail of blood. Sooner or later, they are going to find you. But for now, a rest is what your body demands. Sitting in a corner, you drop your sword and look at the injury. It's not deep, but it definitely smells putrid. The fever gets worse by the minute and you provisions are running low. You uncork the last vial and apply to your wound. It stings, but nothing compared to the fever. After a deep breath, only one word gets out of your mouth:

"Shit..."

"This is the worst of the worst", you think. "Why didn't I stay with mother and brother in Waterdeep?". Toiling day and night as coppers was such a dull life that spending your few centuries of life on that seemed like death itself. You're much more young, energetic and ambicious. And like every ambicious youngster, you take up a sword in hand, wear your gear and go on an adventure. Life for coin and glory is the life of dreams. A tavern and a party are all the family you need..."were", more like. And if you poke too deep on the drider's nest, someone has to be the bait for the others to escape...

"Of course it had to be the drow..."

Your pointy ears, dark skin, red eyes although giving you senses or defenses no other human could dream of, carry a heavy burden: that of prejudice. "Drows are seen as evil", your mother said. "Don't give people reason to believe that". What does it matter now? You're going to die a pathetic and alone death soon.

A basic Trelasarra deck, one of the recent commanders from Forgotten Realms set. What started as trying to build a lifegain that actually does something besides gaining life (Yeah, Evra, I'm looking at you) evolved into something special and deeply intimate.

You see, I'm doing therapy recently in order to overcome my depression and self-loathing, which I carried for a long time over my shoulders. I've been toiling around my inner thoughts and trying to have a different view over life as a whole. My last session taught me that life is more than special: It's a gift and we should value it and value ourselves, how far we've come...and then I found this commander... Trelasarra, both conceptually and mechanicaly, teaches us that taking the time to look at ourselves pays off. She tells us that: "We are not bound by the circumstances of our birth" and "We all may find beauty and light, if we have the courage to seek them". That when we take the time and effort to heal ourselves (Lifegain) we not only get stronger (+1/+1 Counters), but makes the path ahead of us much clearer and brighter (Scry 1). It's a powerful message through such a simple card that shows me how MTG can go much farther than being a game.

As for the deck itself, it's fairly straightforward, but it has a catch: It wants to gain life, but prefers to have it through drippling than floods. That's because Trelasarra doesn't care how much life you gain, but that you're gaining life (Another life lesson: You don't need to do big steps. Small, constant steps can get you much farther still). I tried to go on a kind of go wide/tall strategy and Cleric tribal, taking advantage of the loads of scrying to get the mana or win-cons I need fairly quickly. However, you can go on a combo strategy with Aetherflux Reservoir or even use alternative win-cons like Approach of the Second Sun. It's pretty solid.
