The first time I saw Trostani, Selesnya's Voice , I fell in love with her. Shes not the best life-gain commander out there and she doesn't plan on overruning your opponents with a swarm of tokens. But there is something about her that drew me into making her my own commander. About her being non-threatening, about her being able to copy any token no matter how huge, and lastly about her being able to gain me so much life its almost game breaking.

So let me share to you fellow planeswalker on how she changed the way I view life-gain on commander.

I present to you my "Can't Win With Lifegain" deck.

Piloting

So piloting this deck would be very simple, first of all, stay under the radar. Both threat wise and politically. Keep ramping and keep sand bagging. Set some minor defenses and pillow forts. Might as also setup some decent life gain. When the time is right, make a huge token, gain tons of life, populate, overwhelm, then go for the kill.

Life-gain is pretty much overlooked in commander, unless you have ludicrous amounts of it. That amount changes from person to person, depending on how much damage they can deal, or if they can kill you in one go without dealing damage. That amount for me is somewhere around 80-90 life. So meaning after gaining life and your still below 80 then your not a threat. But that would change when you are near a 100 life. So try to keep a low profile and figure out what a safe life point would be before everyone starts aggro-ing you because of it.

Weakness

Things to watch out for are board-wipes, after you've done your explosive play. It takes some finessing and experience to know when to start putting out huge tokens and when to hold back. You'll get the hang of it eventually.

Of course the bane of all life-gain, infect and commander damage. I have no defense from infect at the moment because it doesn't show up much in my meta. Commander damage however can be remedied by most of my neutering removal, indestructible commanders are workable however hexproof ones are a pain to deal with.

And on a final note, mill is still a thing in commander. However the meta doesn't lean too much into mill, so i guess your safe for now.

Exclusions

I try to follow the 75% rule of commander decks. If your not familiar with the rule is that you build your deck to be at 75% power level, relatively speaking. So with that power level in mind you can go out with new playgroups and almost not being able to worry about your deck being too broken.

So one part of that philosophy is that I'll exclude some notable cards. The most glaring being Dual lands. I somehow find the original dual lands to be unfair in the sense that I wont use them but its ok if my opponents do.

No Serra Ascendant because that card is just broken. No "win the game" cards if I have X or more life because its just a cheap win, I prefer a more epic final showdown.

Final words

So there you have it, my very own brain child.

Lemme know on how it went if you tried playing my deck. Card recommendations are always welcome. Lastly feel free to like the deck. I'd really appreciate it if you do.

Until my next deck.
