Gods willing and brave the elements don't protect against devour flesh

@thuzra, Martial Glory is a spell I'm currently looking at, but i'm seeing how well Mortal's Ardor works first. Unfortunately I've been away for two weeks and unable to test the deck :'( so haven't seen if it is useful. In all likelihood I will be replacing the latter with the former.

@ponto, Yes, protection doesn't stop sacrifice effects, that's why God-Favored General is in the sideboard. He creates plenty of tokens to sacrifice instead of your actual creatures. Another possibility is Legion's Initiative , which would just allow you to send them away temporarily.

Not a bad way of going about it, I have a similar plan going but I am also running green in there which has been working quite well so far, the deck is 4-0 with 1 draw. Check it out and give advice if you think it needs any

Heroic Power

Martial Glory and Nyxborn Shieldmate are mediocre at best. There isn't anything you can ever do about Thoughtseize , but sacrifice effects you can play around. My suggestions are as follows: -2 Martial Glory , -2 Nyxborn Shieldmate , -2 Everflame Eidolon , and +2 Eidolon of Countless Battles , +2 Favored Hoplite , and +2 Madcap Skills . I know you will be loath to take out creatures for enchantments that allow blowouts, but let me explain; Madcap Skills is just bar none the greatest possible damage enabler in standard right now. Furthermore, if your goal is to put enchantments like Rollicker and Skills on a one-drop, it becomes all important to have as many of them as possible.

Another note: If you are comfortable changing colors, I suggest looking into black. Nighthowler , Herald of Torment , and Spiteful Returned are all excellent enchantment creatures with a lot of staying power, even against sacrifice effects, and black gives you access to Thoughtseize as an answer to Thoughtseize and sac effects, if you want that.

Have you thought about using Wild Ricochet to counter Devour Flesh and Thoughtseize also i am using a similar deck how do you deal with merciless eviction?

You know what this deck dies to... TURBO FOG!!!

Sorry for the late replies, I've been away for the week and I hate trying to post updates on my phone.

@RousseausDisciple: So Martial Glory is already removed, but I've kept Nyxborn Shieldmate in for the moment as he has proved useful and helps add more white 1 drops, though his bestow cost is more than Nyxborn Rollicker and I may consider dropping him for more of them.

If I had more Eidolon of Countless Battles they would be in. Its an amazing card and I love it every time it appears. The Madcap Skills you suggested are also in, but I'm not currently that interested in adding more Favored Hoplite as I usually have more interesting things to do on turn 2 than enchant him.

Black is something I'm not currently interested in. While it does provide new options, I dont think it adds enough for the options it takes away.

@specter53551: Unfortunately, Wild Ricochet doesn't work for me as it is to costly. I set a rule down when I made the deck that CMC 3 was the highest I would go. Its a great idea if you have a more midrange deck though.

I've never actually came up against Merciless Eviction (and as such had never even seen it) but I think Legion's Initiative is the only answer to it, but that is a difficult one as that using legions iniative loses all your enchantents and counters. Dont forget though that any Bestowed creatures will remain after the spell resolves, leaving the enemy open if they use it.

@Corinthaniel: Yes, this would go down hard against Turbo Fog, but thats true for any creature deck. You do have an option against them though. Spirit of the Labyrinth makes them lose card advantage, which means they can only stall for a few turns before you make them run out of fog options.

if you need a good 3 drop i would suggest Archetype of Courage his first strike ability is really good when it comes to mitigating damage and getting around death touch.

I don't know if you realize this, but Gods Willing doesn't protect against board wipe spells like Supreme Verdict . The spell doesn't target a specific creature, so giving it protection won't save your guys. Just be aware of that so it doesn't get you in trouble at a tournament.

Control is the meta and will stomp this deck out. You need to be able to T4 win if you run aggro.

@ rubyvnine: Unfortunately, Archetype of Courage is just to weak for this. First Strike is nice, but against non creature based decks (like many control) its wasted, and against creature decks I can use my various protections and evasions to replicate its effects.

@ ComancioEdda: Yes I am aware of the failings of Protections, thankfully Boros Charm is able to render Supreme Verdict completely useless, so that's what I use to counter it.

@ Bunzteiger: I'm sure you believe that, but my experiences have been quite different. I made this with the intention of taking on control with it, and thus far it has worked marvellously. Removing their card advantage with Spirit of the Labyrinth , taking away their toys with Revoke Existence and ignoring their removal with Gods Willing and Boros Charm . In fact, the only decks I've had trouble with are Rakdos Control due to Thoughtsieze and Devour Flesh , but I've recently added new options to deal with the latter which I hope to test out this friday.

I would sideboard the Mortal's Ardor in place of the Spirit of the Labyrinth . It's a great and underrated card, but I find it better for midrange instead of aggro. Then put in Ajani's Presence to help even more against removal. It also helps against board wipes. And is Battlewise Valor working for you? I found it was too expensive for a heroic activator.

September 8, 2014 10:06 a.m.

Darth_Versity says... #18

I've found Mortal's Ardor and Battlewise Valor to both be excellent Heroic triggers, especially against other aggro decks. The apparent difference in Strength gives an opponent the confidence to attack/block and the instant seals their fate.

Spirit of the Labyrinth is a great card, but in my local meta it sees to little use as excessive card draw is rare. I keep it sideboarded anyway in case of control match ups

Ajani's Presence is one of those awkward cards I'm struggling to decide if I like. It protects against board wipes, but is expensive while doing that, and I work on a low mana count. On top of that it does nothing against AEtherspouts which I fear will become the new Supreme Verdict .

I may try it out this week at FNM and see how it goes.

While it is a higher CMC, what do you think of Abzan Falconer over Cavalry Pegasus ? The main benefit I see to it is that its a passive flying gain instead just during attacking. I know you don't want to slow a heroic deck but if you are using Phalanx Leader then it is a strong option to consider.

I hadn't considered Abzan Falconer But I can see how it would work well with all the 1/1 counters flying around.

The higher CMC is slightly off putting, but generally I lay Cavalry Pegasus turn 3 anyway. I'll experiment with it and see how it goes. Thanks.

I like the ideas you are rocking here. Serious question. Why are you not running Seeker of the Way ? It would get all the benefits but not need to be targeted by your spells specifically to trigger. Same thing Jeskai Student if you want to keep it white. Considered splashing red for things like Hammerhand , Dragon Mantle , Monastery Swiftspear , Mogis's Warhound , Anax and Cymede and Everflame Eidolon
