This is my go-to control deck when it comes to EDH. It all started when i set out to build an Esper control deck. at first, i wanted to build a Sharuum deck, but i knew that my inner spike would cause me to make nothing but another combo deck. so i set out to make a brutal control deck that won through attrition, not combo. soon enough however, i found myself squeezing in every major synergistic effect possible and this resulted in a lean, mean (quite simply evil) control deck that cripples everyone and owns the board.one of the first cards i should talk about isTrinket Mage. this little wizard is secretly the backbone of the decks control.Dispeller's Capsule,Tormod's Crypt,Sensei's Divining Top, Mana Crypt,Sol Ring, and the secret little gem,Expedition Mapare all answers that he has access to. this package may seem "cute" at first until you factor in what you can do with Expedition Map . enter this decks recursion engine-Academy Ruins/Buried Ruin. the very first target for trinket mage is usually the map, the very first target of the map is always academy ruins. what good does that do us? well for one it allows us to recur our artifacts, namely the map to find more land, lands like Thespian's StageandDark Depthsfor a wonderful little combo (20/20 indestructible flying spaghetti monster anyone?)"Cool so you can reuse your capsule and find land, how nice..." other academy targets include Oblivion Stone(how does destroying everything every other turn sound?) any mana rocks, andHelm of Obedience. oh, and of course,Crucible of Worlds. the center of all this recursion is the academy, so what happens if its destroyed? Buried Ruin and crucible happen. now, since im running crucible i might as well run some other lands that are auto includes; all 9 fetches,Strip Mine andWasteland. and lets not forget about marit lage- having a flying indestructible space squid is awesome, having a recurrable flying indestructible space squid is even better. i also mentioned Helm of Obedience , an odd choice, i know, but this deck needed atleast one way to auto kill someone- and so i runLeyline of the Voidfor a nice, simple, space efficient combo that supports what the deck is trying to do- or simply recur mindslaver to take over someone completely. to help find and build this engine i run a wide array of tutors;Vampiric Tutor, Enlightened Tutor,Mystical Tutor,Cruel Tutor andDemonic Tutor. i also runPerplexand Muddle the Mixture. perplex can find o- stone, crucible, trinket mage and various answers as well as cruel tutor in a pinch.

Now that we have gotten the main links in the deck out of the way we can talk about the basics- namely what esper excels at- removal, counters, and draw.

Counters- I run the basic suite of free counters, pact of negation and force of will, but beyond that the notable heavy hitters are mana drain, cryptic command, Dromar's charm, and forbid. Other than those the rest provide basic counters with mild bonuses.

Now, removal- for removal I'm once again running your standard white creature kills- swords to plowshares, condemn, and path to exile. After those everything will hit multiple types of cards- for the kill anything group I run vindicate, utter end, and oblation (which used to be better, but is still a catchall removal that can draw me cards in a pinch). For artifacts and enchantments I run return to dust- which can easily two-for-one if cast at the right time, esper charm- which doubles as card draw/discard, mortify- which can hit creatures as well, and dispeller's capsule- which can be recurred and is pseudo uncounterable if already on the board.

On to draw- ponder, preordain, brainstorm, and impulse are all dig/cantrips. Fact or fiction, Jace's ingenuity and opportunity for raw card draw power (the latter two are better on curve than your typical "x" draw spell). For sift and deck control I run top and scroll rack- the rack works incredibly well with all the triggered shuffle effects I run (fetches, tutors)

Big bangs- for mass removal I run damnation, wrath of god, and supreme verdict for my cheap wraths. For a recurable wrath I use oblivion Stone and for a fetchable wrath I run fated retribution- which is an instant, and terminus- which miracles with mystical/vampiric tutor. For my final wrath I run hallowed burial to help avoid graveyard shenanigans.
