I think the SB could use a little work if you want to make this a more competitive Modern deck. I like the idea of LD in Modern and I think many decks wouldn't be able to handle it. You'd need some artifact destruction in the SB like Shatterstorm or Shattering Spree , and if you're on the draw against Tron they might have the turn 3 Karn before you cast a 3-mana LD spell, so maybe a few Pithing Needle s which also help against Birthing Pod and Splinter Twin decks.

But if you only ever play casual then this deck looks really fun! +1!

I very much like the concept of this deck, but I am worried about the speed.I think you are over estimating your chances of getting Simian Spirit Guide , Boom/Bust , and Darksteel Citadel is fairly small. I tend to make my decks in sets of fours. The odds of drawing any particular thing in a hand of 7 is about 37%. 0.373 is not such good odds. If you're willing to burn yourself (which you should be), you can do a little better.

I noticed you're only other turn one option is firing a Lightning Bolt , which is honestly a pretty good move, but it does rely on drawing a Lightning Bolt (0.37), and a red mana source Simian Spirit Guide , or Mountain . With 15 mountains and the ability to mulligan, it is practically guaranteed you'll get one, so the only hangup is the odds of drawing your lightning bolt without either Simian Spirit Guide or Mountain , which is not impossible.

I like your red mana boost ideas; With Simian Spirit Guide , Seething Song becomes a more viable option, have you considered that? The new mana pool rules help too.

Your focus seems to be a little narrow on the control too. I think adding Spark Elemental , Raging Goblin or something like it would increase your flexibilty very much.

This looks like an interesting deck. Of course only play testing it will really show it's strengths and weaknesses. Good luck.

A splash of white would be really powerful. Ajani Vengeant is a very good, and the card Flagstones of Trokair works really nicely with Boom/Bust , as it allows you to find a Sacred Foundry . Some R/W lists play World Queller and Magus of the Tabernacle , as both play into your strategy. Overall a great deck!

its a shame youre going modern only... seems like a lot to rely on for turn 1 when you can just Raze without fail

This is a really fun deck! I have always loved Shivan Wumpus . It puts your opponent in a bad place either way :)

There are only a few suggestions I have; and the majority are all for your sideboard. I'll try to provide a little info for each; but the deck is pretty darn good at what it does (destroying lands)! The only ideas I could come up with are:

  1. IF you add white, Wear / Tear is a great sideboard option.
  2. Mortarion is 100% right about adding white and Flagstones of Trokair ...such an amazingly good combo with Boom and Sacred Foundry ....puts the opponent down a land while you maintain your count. I really like this interaction.
  3. Your main-board allows for some great artifacts like Torpor Orb and Damping Matrix in the sideboard to shut off decks like Affinity, Pod, and Twin (especially Damping Matrix).
  4. Deus of Calamity fits well in here.
  5. Shatterstorm is a great sideboard card for you against Affinity (if that deck is ever a problem...although I have a feeling it may make up less and less of the meta soon).
  6. A good finisher for your deck may be Koth of the Hammer ....it may even work better than Foriysian Totem in some cases. Obviously, if you added white, Ajani Vengeant would be amazing!
  7. Eidolon of the Great Revel could be a great sideboard card for your against decks like Storm, Affinity, Zoo, etc. that play a ton of cards under 3-CMC. It hurts you too; but keeping them to 1-2 lands and hurting them every time they cast something; only to turn around and cast Shivan Wumpus and not getting hurt can be back-breaking.
  8. Obviously, if you run into a lot of graveyard-based decks, you can through a few Relic of Progenitus in your board (unless you are in white at which time you'd play Rest in Peace because of what it can do against Affinity, Snapcaster, Tarmogoyf, etc.

To be honest, there's not a lot that can be improved upon. These are all ideas; but none of them are steadfast "this should be changed" type things. Hopefully this provides some help :)

Thanks as always curdbros ! boom bust can be used on fetch lands too. Torpor Orb and Damping Matrix are going to fight over a spot in the sideboard.

I really really enjoyed Deus of Calamity although I had 2 in the deck and only dropped it 1 out of like 10 games.. I found it hard to find 5 red mana.. although after a few edits and especially with spirit guides in my deck might handle it a bit better. Might do more testing.

I'm considering white just for Ajani Vengeant my maybe board has a few ideas for other finishers in it.. I like Awaken the Ancient .. seems good but I'm not so sure. Koth wasn't on my mind but now it is.

Chandra, the Firebrand seems like all 3 abilities could be fun.

Torpor Orb or Damping Matrix , Relic of Progenitus and Shatterstorm are all cards I think are changes that i'll make. Thanks again!

If you splashed a tiny but of green you could add cards like Exploration so you can use Crucible of Worlds to cycle Ghost Quarter multiple times a turn for even more land kill. It shouldn't be that hard to support a single G either. By that same logic, you could also throw in Azusa, Lost but Seeking to let you play even more Ghost Quarter s each turn.

Exploration isn't legal?

There are plenty of other cards that give you a similar effect that are, like Summer Bloom , Explore or Azusa, Lost but Seeking . Also, Exploration was just reprinted in the new Conspiracy set, and I know gatherer shows that version as being modern-legal.

I agree with more Shivan Wumpus rather than add Deus of Calamity as a finisher in this type of deck. Unless you did go white and use shocks + fetches + Flagstones while taking out all the Darksteel lands.

Exploration is only legal in Legacy, so it wouldn't work here, although it would be great if it could! This deck doesn't draw many cards, so Azusa wouldn't get much use I think. I'm really considering buying the paper cards to make this deck since it would be fun in casual games! Don't know how competitive it would be, but it's the type of deck they say you'd lose friends with lol!

Chandra, the Firebrand would be amazing when copying Boom/Bust with her minus 2, Ajani Vengeant has the right Ultimate, but really with the rest of the deck they won't have many lands left anyways. Koth of the Hammer or Chandra would be more realistic. Although both could be unnecessary. With how effectively this will destroy land, most people will scoop before you've even damaged them in all reality.

At least one more Shivan Wumpus would make me feel better about the deck as a whole, considering he is your big finisher besides just people rage quitting.

Note that boom in Boom/Bust destroys one of your lands too... would you like clarifying the turn one-two-three again? maybe a Crucible of Worlds could help you here.

June 8, 2014 9:51 p.m.

Rakasha says... #22

i have Crucible of Worlds x 2 in the mainboard. Turn one you play a Darksteel Citadel then discard a Simian Spirit Guide and target the citadel with the Boom/Bust . The crucible is mainly for Ghost Quarter lockdown... basically you should empty there decks lands in a few turns.

June 8, 2014 10:36 p.m.

I'm wondering if you really need the full set of Surgical Extraction . I know it gets rid of lands, but maybe if you added 1-2 Toil / Trouble instead you could burn them for a lot with all the cards they can't play due to lack of land and draw you some cards at the same time.

maybe Psychogenic Probe ? seems like it would pair well with ghost quarter, sowing salt, and surgical extraction.
