UBx ThopterSword Whir

Modern

DC941

Sideboard

Based on the brainstorming by /r/modernmagic, this is an amazing list utilizing the underused Whir of Invention to focus on the Thopther Sword-combo while having the tools to fight the meta. Primer is being constantly expanded whenever I find the time! Thoughts on cards to explain the list:

  • Whir of Invention: the card this page focuses on. Chord of Calling has sen success in many different archetype in modern, but mostly in Abzan Company and Kiki-Chord. Improvise is only a tiny bit worse than Convoke, as it can't produce colored mana. It is more complicated to win with artifacts than with creatures, however, since you can't just attack your opponent with them.

  • Sword of the Meek & Thopter Foundry provide a combo which turns one generic mana into 1 life and a 1/1 flyer. This is a mana sink that helps stabilize against any aggression very well, generating "infinite" card advantage. It is probably the best target for Whir in modern, so another focus of this page.

  • Time Sieve: with the Thopter/Sword combo on board, Time Sieve provides infinite extra turns for just 5 mana. This turns the advantage-generating combo into an instant win, which is definitely advantageous in modern. Too cute for very controlling versions, but probably worth the one-of in lists with Tezz. Currently still being tested sceptically.

  • Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas: one of the strongest planeswalkers. His only disadvantage is that he places a constraint on your deck: you need to have a reasonable artifact count. This makes fitting actual creatures into the decklist difficult, but comes with a huge payoff - an alternate win condition and a great cantrip. He can also beat down an opponent really quickly on an empty board, provided you have an artifact handy.

  • Glint-Nest Crane: seems really strong as it provides another strong cantrip, and it was regularly played in lists without Whir. I am however not sure if we still want this anymore, as it skips lands, Whir of Invention and removal.

  • Pentad Prism: kiki-Chord uses Wall of Roots to generate two green mana for Chord of Calling - we can do something similar! Prism provides two blue and one colorless mana for Whir, which is a huge ramping effect. This is not all, however: it also helps ramp out Tezzeret or Cryptic Command on turn 3, or p, or put an artifact on the board proactively while keeping available Remand, Negate, Fatal Push and Abrupt Decay mana. Alternatively, it can be used to ramp Whir by 1 and play one piece of the combo right away.
