Sideboard

First the question has to be asked; “Why Merfolk?”

  • I already own these cards from Standard.
  • I already own the expensive cards run in other Pioneer Decks.
  • I just effing love Merfolk.

So, why shouldn’t I play Merfolk?

  • I’m going to spend $400 on a deck.
  • I don’t own these cards and I’m not going to spend $400 on a deck.
  • I’m not worthy enough to love Merfolk.

Merfolk are not tier 1, or even tier 2, but they can hold their own against decks that are. Blue and Green are both powerful colors that when combined are even stronger, however usually this pair’s main focus is ramp. Merfolk want to play powerful creatures and stop you from doing so, so naturally the deck is weak to board clears, right? Well, yes and no. A lot of Merfolk have flash, meaning that you can hold up instants during your opponent’s turn without sacrificing your own tempo by not playing a creature on your own turn. Alternatively, Collected Company can even let you hold your mana and still bring out creatures that don’t have flash. Collected Company, Mutavault, and Harbinger of the Tides are the main additions to the deck, also, the deck is able to run Breeding Pool and Botanical Sanctum together for the first time for a strong early mana base. The other Dual lands that the deck can play that come in untapped(Important; later explained) are Yavimaya Coast and Hinterland Harbor, my personal choice is Yavimaya Coast as it is:

  • Cheaper
  • Enters the battlefield untapped regardless if you have a forest or an island(which the deck lacks in)
  • Doesn’t support the transformative sideboard I choose to run. The mana base can be modified if you prefer to run a more traditional sideboard or just feel that you can have Hinterland Harbor enter the battlefield untapped consistently. (Currently I am running a more traditional sideboard for the format.)

(Article will be further updated with detailed explanations on each card soon)
