Well, if we're playing dragons anyway, might as well splash white for Ojutai. Plus, Kolaghan seems cool.
As such, a deck was born.
GOAL:
This deck is a straightforward control deck with a variety of dragons as its wincons. This allows us to make use of the great "dragon-reveal" spells in the Grixis colors, and well, they're dragons. They're big, fly, and do crazy stuff.
CARD CHOICES:
-Win Cons:
3x Dragonlord Kolaghan: It has haste, wins games fast, and has a semirelevant ability, which will be annoying for a lot of aggro and midrange strategies. It's either answered or it wins the game.
2x Dragonlord Ojutai: The card we're splashing white for. A free anticipate every time it attacks is a big deal, and well, this card has proven it's worth over time. If you can protect it, you win.
1x
Silumgar, the Drifting Death
: It is a resilient threat, and can possibly wipe boards. In combination with the burn spells in red, this card helps us quite a bit.
-Counter spells:
3x
Silumgar's Scorn
: For dragon control decks, this is the go-to counter spell. For manabase reasons, I'm not playing 4.
2x Scatter to the Winds: The Dissolve of BFZ. Not much to say here, other than that it has a (sometimes relevant) Awaken ability.
1x
Horribly Awry
: Too good in certain matchups not to play, too bad in other matchups to play more than 1 or 2 of.
-Removal Spells:
2x
Crux of Fate
: Our go-to wrath. We only need 2, since we're clearing the board with our removal spells already.
1x
Radiant Flames
: Conditional sweeper against aggro decks. It's not uncommon to deal 3 to everything since we're playing 4 colors, and this card can be a huge blowout in combination with
Silumgar, the Drifting Death
1x
Crackling Doom
: I hate Dragonlord Atarka.
3x
Draconic Roar
: A great removal spell. Can close out the game faster when used before casting Dragonlord Kolaghan or Dragonlord Ojutai
2x
Foul-Tongue Invocation
: Sacrificing a creature while your opponent gains 4 life is a huge tempo play. The creature sacrificed could also be a thopter token though, so I feel 2 is the right number for this card.
2x Ruinous Path: Same story as Scatter to the Winds. We lose Hero's Downfall, so we have to play this. Again, the Awaken ability could be relevant.
2x Transgress the Mind: Hits a lot more than you'd think it does. Disdainful Stroke was good last standard, and this is possibly better.
-Draw Spells:
4x Dig Through Time: The best draw spell in Standard. Digs (haha) for anything we need.
3x Anticipate: As a 4-color deck and one with a lot of redundancy in it's removal, I chose this card over the traditional Jace's Ingenuity type spells. It will help us hit land drops, as well as find answers.
The Mana Base:
Well, it's a budget mana base, and not optimal.
However, if you're not looking to spend money on your lands, I think this is the optimal mana base. Suggestions are always welcome.
Conclusion:
This is probably the deck I'm playing next standard. I'm always open to suggestions! Hope you like the deck!
