Second highest rated Multani, Maro Sorcerer deck on Tappedout!!

Hello all! Welcome to my new and improved 2.0 primer for the underrated and overpowered Multani, Maro-Sorcerer! This deck was one of the earliest ones that I posted on here and definitely one of my favorites to play! It was originally built (and disassembled) during the height of the covid-19 pandemic but, like Multani himself, it has grown back stronger than ever since then! This deck occupies the slot in my mono-colored Legends of Dominaria cycle of decks and the rest are listed at the bottom if you're interested in seeing me paying my respects to some of the legends that have stood the test of time! Months after dismantling the original deck (a list that is now lost to time...) and while doing research for what other mono color legends to use alongside Feldon of the Third Path for that cycle, I came across Multani, Maro-Sorcerer again. I thought to myself "hmm, I had that deck before. I think I took it apart... wait, why did I do that? That deck was awesome!" and immediately began rebuilding! The goal of this deck is really simple, as most mono-green decks tend to be:

  • Ramp!

  • Draw enough cards to make mages blush!

  • Play Multani!

  • SMASH!!

While the term "budget" means different things to different people, my decks do have one. Because of that, please do not recommend overly expensive cards like Gaea's Cradle. I am also not looking to add "fast mana" sources like Mana Crypt or Jeweled Lotus. Please do not recommend those, either.

Lastly, I am, unfortunately, one of those people who does not like Universes Beyond cards. I see the appeal of them and I won't fault other people for playing them but I will not play them myself and they will not be considered for this or any other deck I build, regardless of how good they'd be for the deck. So... please do not recommend those, either.

Any other ideas, recommendations, advice (whether needed or given) or anything else you can think of, please leave as comments below. I'm on this site a little too often so I'll probably respond pretty quickly!

With all that being said... let's get into the deck!!

**Note : All cards choices came from research using Scryfall, EDHREC and here on TappedOut.

CUSTOM CATEGORIES FEATURES CARDS IN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS. THEY ARE NOT DUPLICATES. DECK CONTAINS 100 CARDS.

This part is totally optional and not related to the deck. Please feel free to skip if uninterested. I don't blame you!

My journey with Magic began briefly in 8th grade. I tried it out for a little while due to the popularity of other card games at the time like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! with some friends from school (this was around Mirrodin block and 8th edition for reference). While I loved the art, the basic gameplay was a bit too complicated for me to understand at the time and I dropped the game for what I thought was for good.

Fast forward to years later. My brother had asked for some MTG stuff for Christmas. I thought it would be kind of cool to check out Magic again since I hadn't even seen or heard of it since I dropped it. While doing some research for what to get him (he already had some cards/decks previously, plus whatever I had given him from the stuff I had from 8th grade which was mainly 8ed bulk) I came across various Amonkhet products and I think it was basically love at first sight from that point on. The art and feel of Amonkhet hooked me and managed to do what I thought was impossible... and that was to get me back into TCGs for the first time in 15 years. The first deck I ever purchased was the M19 Ajani Planeswalker deck, which I still have and love (though it doesn't see any use anymore). After getting into the game and purchasing a handful of booster packs and bundles and few more Planeswalker decks (M19 Sarkhan, HOU Nicol Bolas and a set of Nissa vs Ob Nixilis duel decks) to build up a collection over the next few months, the trailer for the first new set to be released since I started playing the game was released... the Liliana trailer for War of the Spark. I was floored by what I was seeing. The music (huge Linkin Park fan in my teenage years), the emotions in the internal conflict Liliana was facing, the real possibility of major characters dying... I think that trailer is what hooked me for good. The amount of love and care put into that trailer has yet to be matched by any other set trailers since then in my opinion.

A few months later my brothers and I found commander and it's been what we've played almost exclusively ever since. Legendary creatures are one of the coolest parts of the game and building entire decks around one fascinated me far more than whatever I was building at the time. Our first decks we played with were Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, Nicol Bolas and Niv-Mizzet, Parun. These decks were mostly bulk and were unsleeved (the horror!) but we had a great time and my commander deckbuilding urge has never really been sated since. It's a fantastic format and the focus on fun over competitiveness is something I love.

Sadly, as I was debating getting into the local game store scene in my area, the covid-19 pandemic began and kinda killed that dream. That, combined with the fact that the nearest local game stores are 45-60 minutes away from me, means that as of right now... I've only ever played Magic with my two brothers (and very rarely, my brother in law as well) in my own house. Please keep this in mind when commenting. This means that my "local meta" consists of all the decks that I have built and listed on here, both public and private ones. (The private ones are locked only because they're not terribly interesting or unique.)

I am an avid deckbuilder and am almost always working on something, whether it's public on here or not. I love working on commanders with cool or interesting lore or characters that had a major importance in Magic's history. I also love building decks for lesser known commanders/partner pairings because I find it a bit boring to see so many decks for, like, Chulane, Teller of Tales, Yarok, the Desecrated or Kess, Dissident Mage for example. I am very lore focused when it comes to the decks I build, however (which I'm sure you can tell by this deck). I'm also the kind of dude who makes sure the basic lands arts all match the theme/plane of the deck. Flavor > function for me!

And while I think may be possible that Wizards might not have the game's long term best interests in mind anymore, I still love this game and it's various planes and characters. Any critiques/concerns I may express are only because I love the game and I want it to be around for years to come for others to discover and enjoy as I have.

  • Favorite sets: Amonkhet/Hour of Devastation, War of the Spark, Commander Legends, Kaldheim, Kamigawa Neon Dynasty

  • Favorite planes: Amonkhet, Kaldheim, Kamigawa, Dominaria

  • Favorite characters: Nicol Bolas, Ajani (RIP), Feldon, all five Amonkhet Gods (also RIP)

  • Favorite colors/playstyles: I will play just about anything that's not mass land destruction and stax but I love token strategies, no matter the colors!

“This is my place of power. Nothing can take root here unless I allow it.”

—Multani, maro-sorcerer

Multani, Maro-Sorcerer has the incredible ability to scale his power and toughness based off the amount of cards in hand. Not just your hand, but ALL cards in hand by ALL players! This means that Multani's power/toughness is usually 10+ and can sometimes be 30+. For six mana! Fantastic value! Problem is, with great power... comes a great drawback. His second ability is Shroud. Shroud is similar to Hexproof in the way he's immune to being targeted by stuff like Doom Blade or Unsummon, except with Shroud, the immunity stretches to cover targeted spells and abilities from US as well. Literally nothing can target him. No Lightning Greaves or Rancor here, sadly. That being said, we have ways to get around his target immunity, so it's not nearly as big of a drawback as you might think. The words "Equal to" and "Greatest power" are our best friends here.

Since Multani scales off the amount of total cards in hand by all players, this deck takes a slightly group-hug theme. Stuff like Howling Mine, Font of Mythos and Mikokoro, Center of the Sea are the kinds of card draw effects that this deck thrives on. This does end up being a bit dangerous as other players tend to usually have five to seven cards in hand at all times (sometimes even more!) but group hug/political tactics usually help to keep the heat off us until it's time for Multani to strike, and when he does... he ends games. FAST.

Outside of gameplay, there is another downside to this commander... and that's because he is, unfortunately, on the Reserved List. This means that his price could fluctuate wildly depending on the time you go looking to purchase one because there will never be any reprints of this exact card. Foil copies, especially (which sucks because I really want one and missed out when they were a lot cheaper!). As of this 2.0 update in early April 2023, he currently sits at about $7-9, which I think is fairly reasonable. The bottom line is that if this commander interests you, I'd suggest getting one if the current price range (whenever that may be for when you decide to build) is acceptable to you and don't think twice about it. You may come back to it months/years later and find that it's gone up by a large amount and even if you don't like the deck or playstyle, trading it is always an option! Disclaimer: I am not a Reserved List expert and I have little knowledge or interest in "investing" in Reserved List cards

"The battlefield is cluttered enough. Be still."

Garruk, Primal Hunter has a useful +1 for making blockers and, if we have enough land, his -6 is also nice. Neither of these are what his main focus is, though. His -3 reads "Draw cards equal to the greatest power among creatures you control." If Multani is out and everyone's hands are reasonably full, this will basically read "Draw a stupid amount of cards. Maybe like 20." For five mana. This in turn will make Multani's power skyrocket to ridiculous levels. Insane!! This is just one of the BIG draw spells in the deck. More on that later.

Nissa, Who Shakes the World is mainly used for ramp. Like Garruk, her various abilites are basically nice extra but she has one main focus, and that's to ramp.

“Life can be found in all things, even things unnatural.”

—Multani, maro-sorcerer

The new Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus from ONE probably doesn't need much explanation. It doubles power/toughness when combat starts and the buff lasts until end of turn. Sure, seven mana is a lot but this is a mono-green deck. Seven mana is like turn four for us. Besides, know what's better than a 22/22 Multani? a 44/44 Multani!!

Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar has some great land-based synergies and is a newer version of Multani, so it's a must-include in my opinion.

Ashaya, Soul of the Wild turns all our creatures into forests. Great for ramp but even better for prevention of "All nonland permanent" effects such as Cyclonic Rift or Planar Cleansing or something. Like Multani, she gets bigger the later the game goes on as her power/toughness scales with the amount of lands you have.

Azusa, Lost but Seeking is excellent for ramping early. Is especially great in this deck because of all the card draw. The odds that you'll be able to live the dream and play three lands a turn with her on the field are pretty high!

Kogla, the Titan Ape is here for removal. Not my favorite, and will likely be replaced. Makes for a good BIG draw target, though.

Ghalta, Primal Hunger will only cost GG most of the time. Two mana for a 12/12 with trample? Easy include. Amazing target for a BIG draw spell, too!

Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma reduces the cost of all our big MV creatures (which is most all the creatures in the deck) and provides them with trample if they have high enough power (which, again, is most all the creatures in the deck). A must include!

Selvala, Heart of the Wilds can MASSIVELY ramp you ahead depending on how big Multani is when he hits the battlefield. Her ability could potentially read ", , Add like 30 with Multani and full/semi-full hands. This is the kind of card that this deck lives for! She also lets everyone draw cards if they play out the biggest creature. This ties in nicely to the whole group hug thing.

Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse seems unassuming at first. She makes a single cat token every time you draw your second card per turn (which, for us, should hopefully be every turn). However, her second ability is what makes her so great. For six mana, she makes the base power/toughness of all your creatures equal to the amount of cards in your hand. If some BIG draw spells have been played, this means that all your creatures could be nearly as strong as Multani himself!

Grothama, All-Devouring is a massive big draw spell target. Also helps with card draw for us or our opponents.

Avenger of Zendikar is a green staple. Has great synergy with all the ramp we have. Ulvenwald Hydra also synergizes well with lands and lets us tutor for a land with his ETB effect. This should usually be used to grab Reliquary Tower. Both are pretty straightforward.

Dawnglade Regent is one of the Monarch enabling cards in the deck. Monarch helps players to draw cards and can incentivize them to attack each other and not us. Also provides all of our stuff some protection in the form of Hexproof, which is always nice. Definitely a great addition to this style of deck.

Aggressive Mammoth and Nylea, God of the Hunt both add Trample effects to our creatures. This usually turns Multani into a game ender just by attacking. Crashing Drawbridge does the same but for Haste instead of Trample.

Heartwood Storyteller pushes the group hug/card draw theme. More cards in hand for everyone means Multani can get insanely big insanely fast.

Reclamation Sage for removal.

Eternal Witness is a green staple and is great for recovering a BIG draw spell.

Llanowar Elves is for early ramp. May eventually be cut for more land ramp. Not sure yet.

Psychosis Crawler is absolutely brutal in this deck. A win-condition by itself. If Multani is out and has some decent power, the Crawler can end a game with a single BIG draw spell. If you have enough mana to cast two in a single turn, anything short of a lifegain deck will be immediately wiped out because you just drew 40 cards and dealt out 40 damage in a single turn.

“Beneath her scars, Dominaria’s beauty yet shines.”

—Multani, maro-sorcerer

Greater Good is a repeatable BIG draw sac outlet. Perfect place to feed creatures to if a board wipe is incoming. Can draw stupid amounts of cards with Multani. Sure, you'll have to discard a few but what is discarding three compared to drawing 20?

Concordant Crossroads, Vernal Bloom, Rites of Flourishing, Heartbeat of Spring and Fecundity are more group hug cards. Bloom, Heartbeat and Flourishing help with ramp while Fecundity and Flourishing help with card draw. Crossroads is a new addition that is a massive double edged sword. Might be best played as a way to give Multani Haste before casting him rather than using it as a group hug piece.

Garruk's Uprising is both a reliable draw engine and a Trample enabler, which helps Multani greatly.

Court of Bounty is another Monarch card. It also helps with ramp and if we are the Monarch, it lets us toss out a creature for free!

Unnatural Growth is a newer addition from Midnight Hunt. I don't need to explain this one, I hope.

“Why fight over the lumber in a tree’s trunk when its branches have room for all?”

—Multani

Mainly ramp, removal, protection and recursion. Not much to say about those other than "Use whichever ones you prefer." Some highlights being :

Praetor's Counsel lets you return your entire graveyard to your hand and gives you no maximum hand size for the rest of the game. Great for late in games where you've missed out on drawing Reliquary Tower and have had to discard a bunch.

Rishkar's Expertise, Return of the Wildspeaker, Momentous Fall and Life's Legacy are the rest of the BIG draw spells. Each of these can draw you between 10-40 cards on average if timed right and if two of them are played in a single turn... well... you might actually draw half your deck!

Monstrous Onslaught basically reads "If Multani is out and hands are full, everything else dies."

Traverse the Outlands basically reads "If Multani is out and hands are full, search your library for every single basic and put all of them on the battlefield tapped."

Fungal Sprouting basically reads "If Multani is out and hands are full, you now have 30 saprolings."

Storm Seeker is an old card from Legends that does damage to a player based on how many cards they have in hand. A secret surprise attack to take out unsuspecting players. Best used near the end of the game as Multani himself will weaken when players are knocked out.

Overwhelming Stampede is a game ender most of the time.

Worldly Tutor is a great tutor card that I'm really glad saw a reprint with the release of Dominaria Remastered. Really happy to have one for cheap in the deck now!

"Argoth's doom rained from a clear sky. Yavimaya will not share that fate."

-Multani

Split between ramp and group hug card draw. Nothing much to say here, really. Special mentions being Thought Vessel as another way to get no max hand size and a potential finisher in the form of Akroma's Memorial. The amount of keywords it adds to our creatures basically means someone is getting KO'd the turn this thing hits the field.

"Welcome to paradise."

Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx stands as this deck's only proxy. It helps with ramp but I'm not entirely sure it's needed and didn't want to drop $30 on it.

Mikokoro, Center of the Sea is a great group hug draw card. Reliquary Tower is a must. The rest are just to vary the land base so it's not all just forests. Mosswort Bridge is great in any deck with a focus on big creatures. Throne of the High City is another Monarch card. Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth is too cool to pass up. Does it add much? Probably not. I love the art and flavor, though, so it's in! Boseiju, Who Endures is a newer card from Neon Dynasty. Equal parts land and removal at basically any point of the game means that this was an auto-include the moment it was spoiled. The amount of Legendary creatures in this deck means that it's Channel cost is almost always gonna be .

The basic land art represents Yavimaya. One is a Dominaria Remastered reprint of an old Forest from Urza's Saga... but in FOIL this time!! Woo! Debating adding the stained glass DMU Forests as the other half of the basics. Would the ruin the old-school aesthetic, though? Thoughts?

Other than the typical mono-green staples like Cultivate, Return to Nature and Avenger of Zendikar, some cards that I think should be auto-includes for a Multani, Maro-Sorcerer deck are:

Ever since being rebuilt, this deck has not seen any games. I do remember one game the original iteration of this deck had where an army of 1/1 Saprolings from Fungal Sprouting were rendered useless against a Gruul Charm from Marisi, Breaker of the Coil. Ended up losing but it was hilarious to witness!

Any future games played will be recorded here!

That about does it for this deck! I hope that you enjoyed reading this primer and I hope that seeing a lesser known commander inspires you to seek out some yourself! Variety is one of the best parts of this game!

Thanks!!

Updates Add

OUT - Fyndhorn Elves, Elvish Mystic, Fierce Empath

IN - Worldly Tutor, Concordant Crossroads, Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus

This deck has been updated to it's 2.0 version with the release of Phyrexia: All Will Be One! I like the idea of complete primer reworks being updated to 2.0 updates rather than whatever number they'd be at normally. This way, I can see which ones I have redone to the same level of quality I like my primers to have (based on my Rebbec/Glacian one).

Just a few updates for ONE/DMR. Adding in Worldly Tutor to replace Fierce Empath was easy but cutting the two Elves was a bit rough. I think Crossroads and Zopandrel more than make up for the loss of some early game ramp, though!

Thanks to everyone who's read, commented or upvoted this deck! Hopefully the next few sets bring us some more pushed green cards! (Pretty sure they will lol)
