I'm all for keyrunes, but why not just put in 2x Stormbreath Dragon in place of the keyrunes?

Good question, Stormbreath Dragon is definitely a card I am interested in but I think that 21 land is pretty low to be trying to accommodate land drops for 5 cost cards..
I have been flooding pretty hard in a lot of my casual games running 22 though, so my solution was to go halfway, drop a land and gain 2 keyrunes.
Don't be fooled though, like Mutavault the Rakdos Keyrune can be a threat in itself if I start bricking (drawing nothing useful).
I'm not certain on where the Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Spark Trooper should live in my 75, and I still have Chandra, Pyromaster that everyone tells me to use, but planeswalkers just feel a bit underwhelming at the moment with all the ways to deal with them currently haha.
Sorry for the really long reply, tl;Dr I really want to run the dragon, but I just don't know where to cut.

I myself thought about adding black to the Boros Burn decks that have been running around. Mostly for Rakdos's Return though, have you thought about adding that?

When do you side in Renounce the Guilds ?

corythackston - I have agonised over the card Rakdos's Return and how it might fit in this deck, ultimately while I think it is a fantastic card, I don't think this deck allows the sort of mana or time frame that it really requires to be a standard, plus there is the interaction with Toil / Trouble which becomes unfavourable.

RedSoxFanKy - I found playing the Azorius Matchup that Detention Sphere was destroying my board presence.. One of my key cards are Chandra's Phoenix since it is a recurring threat.
I started looking for answers so I settled on 2 x Renounce the Guilds and 1 x Glare of Heresy .
It just so happens that it's also a fantastic answer to opposing Blood Baron of Vizkopa or Obzedat, Ghost Council and doubles as removal against multi colour heavy decks like Selesnya Aggro, also R/G planeswalkers like Domri and Xenagos.. So the answer so far has been just control, but there are a lot of other decks that it works against :)

Personally, I would take 1 lightning strike out for 1 swamp/mountain, then just throw the 2 stormbreaths in in place of the keyrunes. But if this setup is working for you, then I'd stick with it. +1'd, Nice deck.

Very sweet deck, I've built something similar and i'm still having trouble making some decisions. If you can take a look at my deck Chaos Burn! (B/W/R) feedback please!

@corythackston:
So I started testing with Rakdos's Return , and it's actually been pretty good.. Maybe it's because I'm running the land to support it at the moment..

I've been looking into some alternate win conditions.. Blood Baron of Vizkopa has been really good for me so far in certain matches, also against control if you can Slaughter Games out their Detention Sphere and resolve Assemble the Legion it's pretty much game over.

I am also thinking about a singleton Elspeth, Sun's Champion though, what do you guys think of some of the recent changes?

NerdPounder says... #11

Rakdos's Return is basically a finisher if you draw it late, so I would think it would be. As far as Elspeth goes, it's not really a burn card, but she wins games by herself. That being said, it's just up to personal taste, if you're pretty set on killing someone with direct damage you may not want it, but if you just like the resiliency she gives for your gameplan go for it. Stormbreath Dragon is a much more burn-esque card for one less mana if you decide to stick with the burn gameplan and want a big finisher.

Hey, here's an idea, have you thought about changing the Shock or something to Boros Charm ? Shock does basically nothing in my opinion, and Boros Charm has three very relevant abilities.

Nemaros says... #13

Shock is one of the only reasons I don't curl over and die to aggro decks, also the reason I don't run Boros Charm.. I guess I've crossed the line between straight up burning face and control, mostly my game plan against creature decks is to stick a spike jester or Phoenix and then just burn / Dreadbore out all their blockers and keep on swinging, then finish them off with burn.
Only I'm now looking at some more permanent end-game win conditions.. I dunno if I've lost perspective of what this deck is designed to do, but outracing mono white and red seems like a terrible idea..

Sweet deck man, just wondering what the blood baron is in the side board for?

I run a similar deck and find matchups vs monoblack (which is what I assume he is there for) to be fairly favorable.

Nemaros says... #15

Yeah, Mono Black is generally fine, he's just gravy in that matchup..
He's mostly in there for Mono White, Selesnya, Orzhov and Junk Midrange / Aggro decks since he's a game-ender for most of these decks :)

Hey man just wondering if Skull crack actually prevents damage from Protection. Doesn't protection check the Colour of a spell, not it's effect? For comparison, a card such as Defend the Hearth or Decorated Griffin would still be affected by Skullcrack.

meecht says... #17

Skullcrack says "damage cannot be prevented" and protection prevents damage, so it would allow, say, Master of Waves to die to an overloaded Mizzium Mortars .

February 11, 2014 7:22 p.m.

Ryck says... #18

you are correct that skullcrack causes damage to be prevented, but protection doesn't prevent damage, it reduces it to 0. so if you skullcracked the player then overloaded mizz mortars, the damage will be reduced to 0 when it slaps the master of waves.

From the rule book:

702.16e. Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.

Nemaros says... #20

Yeah, and Skullcrack says that damage CANNOT be prevented, cards having clauses that contradict the rules of magic are not exactly new.. And I have cleared this with a judge :) Blew my mind too

3x Chandra, Pyromaster 4x Nyx-Fleece Ram 4x Satyr Firedancer 1x Searing Blood 3x Chained to the Rocks for side and then because you remove the chained to the rocks from the main you add in 1x Skullcrack Stoke the Flames Warleader's Helix and Magma Jet and remove 1x Shock
