Dimir Mill & Nightmare/Horror Tribal

Umbris, Fear Manifest is a really fun twist on the mill strategy set up by earlier commanders such as Phenax, God of Deception and Bruvac the Grandiloquent by changing the mill strategy into an exile strategy and adding in commander damage. The deck functions quite strongly without the commander in play. However, once you play Umbris, Fear Manifest, the deck really can take off. Keeping your hand fueled is one of the weaknesses of the deck, and luckily Blue/Black ({U}{B}) has plenty of draw options.

Into Exile

Getting Cards into Exile

Umbris, Fear Manifest functions off of exiling cards, not so much milling. However, milling a lot of cards into the graveyard and then exiling all graveyards is a solid strategy, all-be-it a little roundabout.

The Mill Strategy

• Nemesis of Reason: Whenever is attacks, 10 into the yard
• Zellix, Sanity Flayer:Can mill three and then it creates a 1/1 horror, which will trigger Umbris, Fear Manifest and send more cards into Exile.
• Captain N'ghathrod: Mills cards based on combat damage by Horrors.
• Memory Erosion: Punishes opponents for playing spells.
• Psychic Corrosion: Punishes opponents based on card draw. Luckily there is a lot of that.
• Court of Cunning: Mill 6 cards or 30. Plus some card draw!
• Mindcrank: Punishes opponents for losing life.
• Nephalia Drownyard: Some mill on a land when you have nothing better to do with extra mana.

Out of the Yard, into Oblivion

• Ashiok, Dream Render: Mills and then empties each opponent's graveyards. Plus it is a good stax piece.
• Uchuulon: As long as there is a creature in one opponent's graveyard, Uchuulon copies itself. This can get out of hand fast.
• Soul-Guide Lantern: Exiles each opponent’s graveyard. Can also draw a card.
• Relic of Progenitus: Exiles all graveyards and draws a card.
• Lantern of the Lost: Exiles all graveyards and draws a card.
• Bojuka Bog: Exile a single player's graveyard.
• Scavenger Grounds: Exile all graveyards

Directly into Exile

• Tasha's Hideous Laughter: Just a punishing card, especially with higher powered decks with a lot of low to the ground spells.
• Dauthi Voidwalker: Skip the graveyard with an upside.
• Planar Void: Everyone skips the graveyard.
• Leyline of the Void: Only your opponents skip the graveyard.

Exile Payoffs

• Elder Brain: Defeingin player wheels and then you get to cast their cards.
• Dauthi Voidwalker: Put something into play under your control with the cards Dauthi Voidwalker exiled.
• Brainstealer Dragon: Play cards exiled by Brainstealer Dragon..
• Intellect Devourer: Play cards exiled by Intellect Devourer.
• Captain N'ghathrod: The alternate commander of the deck. Steal things out of the graveyard that were milled this turn.

Commander Damage

Boosting Umbris

Umbris, Fear Manifest can become HUGE in a very short amount of time. However, it lacks any evasion. Having a suite of cards that allow Umbris to deal commander damage is essential to this strategy.

Commander Support

• Spark Double: Acts as a second Umbris for double commander damage and exile triggers.
• Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar: Gives our commander evasion AND triggers Umbris.
• Winged Boots: Gives evasion and protection.
• Shadowspear: Gives trample and can gain an insane amount of life.
• Trailblazer's Boots: Easy evasion to make Umbris unblockable.
• Aqueous Form: Enchanted creature is unblockable. The scry also helps.
• Rogue's Passage: I find in most decks with Rogue's Passage, I don’t use it. Here, it is completely necessary.

• Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar: Card draw on combat damage. Supports Umbris’s triggered ability.
• Phyrexian Rager: Supports the Horror tribal triggered ability on Umbris and draws a card.
• Dread Presence: Supports Umbris’s triggered ability and has a sudo-landfall ability to draw cards from.
• Whispering Madness: Wheel effect with a Cipher ability!
• Windfall: Wheel effect
• Black Market Connections: This is the whole package. Can ramp, draw a card, AND create a changeling, which will support Umbris’s triggered ability… all at the same time!
