Hiya, welcome.

I've built 4 new EDH decks in paper 2021 alone and i won't spent a single dime on one more... Yeah until Umbris, Fear Manifest made his appearance. Still havent figured out in what precon or where Umbris was originally printed. It said Commander: Innistrad: Crimson Vow. But MTG fandom(wiki) talks about Soulbonders cycle... Anyway glad we have Cardmarket. As soon i saw Umbris slowly creeping up in price i just went for it; Behold number deck no. 5 ... or deck no. 1 in 2022. Cause i ordered the 29th of December got my cards (and ordered even more) till January 2022. Kay i'll shutup, because this is irrelevant.

The thing is with Umbris, Horrors and Nightmare tribal is... a nightmare.

The whole deck has been a challenge, yes i cheated a little with EDHREC with the average decklist because going on a search rampage on scryfall to find every card with exile graveyards, mill and the nightmare/horrors printed... Ain't no body got time for that.

Umbris, Fear Manifest when thinking of deckbuilding there are the obvious Horror and Nightmare tribal, but then again logically we need to be exiling graveyards, milling and protect Umbris aslo some interaction. That are an heck of keyword to put in the 99!

Also mana... I found out if you filter the "good" tribal and support cards the average cmc goes up. And Umbris is a 5 CMC commander that like Muldrotha is a "Kill on sight" tread, so commandertax is quite an issue to cast out of the commandzone repeatedly. A second win condition if the commandertax is too high is (maybe??) needed, haven't found one just jet. Rite of replication is a wincon, but not if ubris got wiped from the board 3 times...

But counting the average cmc of the deck, 35 lands or more are required. 5-6 mana rocks are necessary to support all. So the deck has 58-59 cards left too fill in all the goodies. Taking in all the keyword said before, that's making tough choices and cutting corners...

Like i said, this deck was kind of a nightmare to create ;-) Oh the horrors i had to cut...

Grouping, well... I had a list with how many cards represent itself into a category... But... Yeah as IRL goes, reality sets some hard truths.

So i'll post a primer as the deck runs properly, we ain't there jet... even after a year or the year after

One of my take on Umbris drawing keeps our deck going, so adding cards like Portent even the exile artifacts those draws us a card for as well. It fuels our hand, scrying is topdeck manipulation and important cause we don't wanna draw things we don't need, or the horror to have to topdeck with an empty hand... So i tried to category every keyword into a group but to i've got the balance right, and to really know that, gotta play the deck!

And there is one combo, but it's a 4 card wombocombo so kinda hard to pull off, that's why i left it out. Wormfang Drake + Faceless Butcher Copyspell like Spark Double with Ubris = infinite Umbris triggers

So IRL; In casual or a little competitive early Umbris can be a coin flip if it dies to removal or gets interrupted then its gameplan shifts a little more into exile/mill stuff and try to draw/ramp into interaction. Some creatures in the deck can like Toxrill can take over the game, or when Umbris ETB's it's trigger can fizzle into an early land reveal, but often when this gets repeated or that "one card" opponent need goes into exile is where the decks starts to shine and it's become a calculating matter, exiled cards are 99% permanent, that moment when you ask: "So how many card are in exile?!" Priceless

Maybe board / Sideboarded Show

So a little highlight what's in my current sideboard, and for myself so i take a look to remind me why it's in my sideboard or not lol

Creatures:

• Doom Whisperer Bought it, because there is no recursion, i decided to put it in my Meren deck.

• Grimdancer Not in theme, but it's one i keep in my sideboard.

• Phyrexian Rager Yeah, 3 mana 2/2 to draw a card. Sideboarded but likely to end up there for a long time.

• Phyrexian Obliterator A little over my budget, akward manacost and not really does anything on theme except being a horror. Great card in other decks.

• Hullbreaker Horror Expensive, as in mana. Added because it's tribal and one of the best Horrors if you can use it's potential, not sure if you can reach that in this deck without 0 cmc spells.

• Dauthi Voidwalker Not tribal, but an excellent Leyline of the Void for {B}{B} with the ability to recur a free exiled spell.

• Wormfang Drake Faceless Butcher Do both the same thing, can be part of a 4 card wombocombo. Put in sideboard.

• Banehound Sideboarded, cheap tribal but a haste/lifelink 1/1 can do so much

Interaction:

• Crypt Incursion When life matters more then cardadvantage, maybe. For now in sideboard.

• Drown in Dreams So i bought it, looked at it, thought about it. So 4 mana to draw a single card and mill 2, and more mana to double it after that.... yeah no thanks.

• Go Blank Sideboarded, put it aside for now. I rather exile graveyards and draw a card.

• Windfall Selfexplainatory

Other:

• King Narfi's Betrayal Sideboard, do think enough mill effects are in the deck

• Rod of Absorption Eventually i didn't put it in the deck, it was a tough choice. But the deck runs a few card worth recasting and other then that it depends what the opponent plays for interaction. Under consideration in sideboard.

So i've compared some other builds of Umbris, and on EDHREC. I like to get idea's but make my own choices. Is my choice better then everyone else? No... Maybe?!

Why not run more flicker/blink spells? I run a single Ghostly Flicker because it's a 2 for 1, but most blink spells are 1 for 1. And most Horror/Nightmare don't have the best ETB/LTB triggers besides for Umbris trigger. Logically you're depended when Umbris is on the board in order to blink, and running boots with Shroud doesn't help either. Still put a few in just to keep Umbris alive.

Why not Voltron, a good fat Umbris get's 21 commanderdamage in no time when it's unblockable... Imagine adding swords attached doing crazy stuf and protection from color x and y... You know Boros {R}{W} these day's are better suited for that kind of decks.

Why not run Infect... I've not seen adding infect in other build submitted by users. And generally; infect is no fun for everyone, toxic even... Don't want to lose friends... ... Yeah kidding, i have no friends (insert evil face) if limits are off let's change a few things and adding some extra nasty stuff.

Cut the high CMC cost, some removal spells. Add (optional) the fast manarocks and add free counterspells "package".

Here are a few options to choose from, basically the idea is to give infect and more unblockable spells while ramping out umbris, and drawing into our interaction .

Glistening Oil Only downside upkeep entchanted creature gets -1/-1

Corrupted Conscience Whats not to like? Steal a creature and give it infect.

Plague Stinger Horror, Evasion and cheap

Core Prowler 2/2 Horror and LTB Proliferate

Reaper of Sheoldred Optional, 5 mana is a lot for a 2/5

Phyrexian Vatmother Optional, and not ideal adding a clock getting out infectcounter on our upkeep.

Land:

Inkmoth Nexus

Adding infect is fun, but make Umbris unblockable? There are a few cheap aura's/instants that do just fine the best cheap ones are on the top of this list

Aether Tunnel {1}{U} gets +1/+0

Infiltrate {U} Instant

You Come to a River {1}{U} Instant, also can Bounce something

Invisibility {U}{U} Can only be blocked by walls

Shadow Rift {U} Instant Give shadow, draw a card. That's it

Sapphire Charm {U} Instant Verstalile; Draw, Phase out blockers, or give flying

Slip Through Space {U} At least you can draw a card, but it's limited due to Sorcery speed

Distortion Strike {U} Has Rebound gets +1/+0, but it's limited due to Sorcery speed

Artful Dodge {U} Don't draw a card, but has flashback for {U} it's limited due to Sorcery speed

Thassa, God of the Sea Optional

Wedding Invitation Just putting the options here

There are more cards available but so does the CMC climb.

RAMP:

Ramp in Dimir?! You mean Jeweled Lotus Mana Crypt Mox Diamond?

No, i mentioned those already the cEDH manarocks staple, though we just only have a few cards to choose from but cards like Dark Ritual one turn cycle ramp. Fast mana, faster boardstate:

Bubbling Muck {B} All swamps produce an additional {B}

Culling the Weak I'm just mention this one, to sacrifice is a big downside early game

High Tide {U} All Illands produce an additional {U}

These are maybe a few options to get mean or get maybe the maxed out Umbris deck. But keep in mind not to get greedy in cutting cards, in order to win at least 10 cards needs to be exiled to win with infect. A healthy balance, best scenario is to have a ready to go sideboard so you can swap in and out the powerlevel.

Also cloning has been an option, i've put some in same along with a few blink cards.

Umbris is a challenge to steer, it's a unique playstyle, not your typical run of the mill... mill deck but an exile horror tribal?! Diversity is key =)

Any suggestions or just leave a comment what you think about it. If you think about commenting my landbase could be better, i agree but like in my opening i build 4 EDH decks during a pandemic without anyone to play with. Can only have so much duals, fetches and colorfixing in a collection.

Already own a vast amount of paper EDH decks, so maybe it's time for i won't spend another dime on a new edh deck?
