The main idea for this deck is to use early game/low mana cost control such as
Thought Erasure
,
Murderous Rider
,
Brazen Borrower
,
Blacklance Paragon
, and
Didn't Say Please
to set yourself up for your value-filled late game. Cards like
Drown in the Loch
,
Jace, Wielder of Mysteries
,
Rankle, Master of Pranks
,
Dream Eater
, and
Lochmere Serpent
will be the big plays that will set you up for or be your win-conditions.
This deck does not do great against the top Ramp decks of the meta, like the Simic and Bant decks, but other than that it is great against Aggro and the average Magic player's deck at FNM. I hope to one day improve this deck enough to where it can be consistent against Ramp, but currently, it is just too slow.
Since my last FNM playing this deck I have taken out 3
Rankle, Master of Pranks
and 2
Jace, Wielder of Mysteries
. In their place, I have added in 4
Brineborn Cutthroat
and 1 more
Brazen Borrower
.
FNM October 25th (2-2) (Top 10):
This FNM was great for me to see how my deck works against a lot of different strategies. Especially playing Simic Flash was a great learning experience for how I can play my deck better in the future.
Beat Big Gruul (2-1), their go big strategy was ruined by my Bounce, Removal, and Counter Magic.
Lost to Simic Food (0-2), had some options late game, just got to overwhelmed by the Ramp.
Beat Azorious Flyers (2-1), was free to play aggressively even with us both having flyers because I had the upper hand with removal.
Lost to Simic Flash (1-2), had some really tough time on the draw against Simic Flash but overall it was a competitive match. My instant speed interaction was able to keep up most of the time, but Simic Flash is such a tight deck with little room for the deck to slip up.
FNM November 1st (4-0) (1st Place):
I felt so extremely comfortable running my deck at this FNM. I would say my matchups were better this time around but the fact that I 2-0ed two matches pretty handily lets me know that my deck has some consistency to it.
Beat Rakdos Sacrifice (2-1), the control of my deck left a lot of their must-need permanents removed or bounced into their hand while I had a counter. Prioritizing
Mayhem Devil
and
Witch's Oven
was key to the first game win. Sideboarding
Ritual of Soot
that could kill anything in their deck and
Legion's End
that exiles their
Cauldron Familiar
was perfect to seal a close game 3 win.
Beat Mono-Red Aggro (2-0), was not the normal lineup you see with Mono-Red so the aggro strategy was not the best. His deck let me get into the late game so I could pretty much do anything I wanted to. Once again Ritual of Soot was a great Sideboard card to bring in.
Beat Big-Red (2-0), I think for the most part this match-up is just terrible for a Big Red deck. All of their big damage whether it be creatures or spells, I would almost always have an answer for. Both games I got turn 4
Rankle, Master of Pranks
out and then just held up my Flash/Instants for when I needed it.
Beat Temur Elementals (2-1), First game of this match I struggled a lot stuck on 1 Black mana, so
Murderous Rider
and Rankle could never be cast. Sideboards like
Gadwick, the Wizened
and
Noxious Grasp
were huge against his deck. Gadwick carried my second match tapping his Elementals as much as possible.
