Just wanted to say that this has been a massive help with my own list and it's great that you explain the exclusions in such depth. Any tips on viable opening hands? Cheers

Hey MattN7498, looking forward to all the D&D cards, I also saw you added Greater Good, do you find it usually adds value?

What a nicely written Baldur's Gate Update MattN7498!!

When Wrathful Red Dragon got spoiled i also knew right from the start this is gonna be a staple in Dragon Tribal Decks, period. Same goes for Thrakkus the Butcher. Doubling the attackpower of every Dragon you control? Insane. Giving them trample via Garruk's Uprising for example and double strike via Atarka, World Render or a quick The Ur-Dragon trigger into Sylvia Brightspear in addition and we look at a pretty effective Overrun.

I think we still don't quite get how powerful Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm will be in this deck, it's gonna be almost hilarious. Double Terror of the Peaks and Scourge of Valkas triggers are going to make me smile, haha.

I switched Crux of Fate (i know, i know..) for Blasphemous Act as my Playgroup tends to steal my cards, so they use Crux of Fate to wipe the board with all my dragons or i can't wipe their board as they control MY dragons. With Blasphemous Act i make sure everything dies and comes back to MY graveyard, it also serves as a finisher with Blasphemous Act + Wrathful Red Dragon , shoot x times 13 Damage at non-Dragon targets, including life totals, where x is the number of Dragons you control. With Blasphemous Act you also have yet another way to get your Dragons into the Graveyard for mass reanimation spells like Patriarch's Bidding, Living Death, Haunting Voyage or Twilight's Call.

By the way I really like Twilight's Call as you can play it at instant speed which can be a game changer for example when someone tries to exile our graveyard. More often then not did the Foretell mechanic of Haunting Voyage hindered me by ONE turn to win the game and made me loose, which is why i changed it to Twilight's Call.

I wish cards like Old Gnawbone and Ancient Copper Dragon wouldn't be as expensive as they are, as they would also be a fine addition for my The Ur-Dragon Deck, for obvious reasons.

In general, you were a HUGE inspiration for my own iteration of an The Ur-Dragon Deck and i always come back to your Primer when i need some advice or thoughts on cards. So thank you for the write-up!

Some day I would love to show you my The Ur-Dragon Deck, as i would very much appreciate to hear your thoughts on some of my card picks! (I still need to post it on tappedout..)

Cheers!

No Firkraag, Cunning Instigator ? Just curious because I didn't see an inclusion or exclusion for this one and seems like a decent fit. Although spots are tight haha

Reaperfire For sure! You could cut some of the more odd cards for better interactions and protection but this deck is a bit more casual than my other ones so I just jam the fun cards and don't care a ton about have the correct amount of interaction.

Ebegeezer Usually I'm looking for hands with 3-4 lands, a threat or two, ramp and a card draw engine to refill. The biggest thing with the deck is dumping everything to ramp into the dragons and then casting one, it dying and then having no action. So if you can get the engines to start drawings that would be key.

Niemandswasser Yes I have! It has provided a great way of providing fuel for the big recursion engines and value if you're dragons die to draw more cards. The deck has been moving in a way that the dragons have less power so you're not able to draw as many cards. Might have to include a Crucible of Fire in the future since they're getting lower with each set but I like it a lot if you're doing graveyard interactions!

HerbivoreDragon Yes I think if I were to get another wipe in the deck, I'd add Blasphemous Act for that potential interaction. I've played Twilight's Call in other decks before. I think the ones I have included are better versions of it and there might be a few others out there I'm not thing of but if you're wanting to play more of that effect, I don't see a problem with it. Just don't overload on them.

tinqle I was only including in the update the Elders and one's I wanted to put in the deck if I had space. Firkraag in the exclusion tab further down in the page of the deck description and a small explanation on why. Basically, Firkraag is better as the head of a Goad deck rather than a Goading creature in a dragon deck. With it, I'd rather be goading a lot of creatures than just one per turn.

MattN749,

what do you think about Hellkite Tyrant since treasure tokens are easy to get ?

MattN7498 says... #8

Pascal93 I think if you included all the treasure makers, I could definitely see it if your meta also had a lot of artifact decks.

How has Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund been working out for you? I excluded using it because if someone clones it you lose all your dragons. If you haven't run into that problem often I could always use another haste enabler.

MattN7498 says... #10

MoxRavager Great! Would never take him out of the deck. I used to run him as the Commander and was very aware of what would happen with the clone effects. So usually I don't play him unless I'm going for kills instead of just blind jamming him.

Hey MattN7498!

I just found your list and I really like it.

I was wondering, if you could provide a list of all recursion possibilities within your list and also the ones you excluded and the reason behind it.

I have the feeling, I'm missing them and I was wondering, which I should pick to run and why.

MattN7498 says... #12

Ahdor I think that would be a little bit much of reasons for not including every single other recursion card. The mass recursion cards I have are in the Utility section of the primer. But there's no other mass reanimator cards that are decently costed/synergize with my deck in Magic right now that aren't the two I'm including.

Ahdor says... #13

MattN7498 maybe I'm just blind or stupid. But that's exactly my question.

When I'm reading through your "Utility" section, I can't find any recursion card. I have the feeling the description is either a bit outdated, or I'm really bad and don't understand how to read it.

I assume the two mass recursion cards you are talking about are Haunting Voyage and Patriarch's Bidding, correct?

MattN7498 says... #14

Ahdor Sorry they're in Finisher Section.

MattN7498 thanks a lot!

Another question that came to my mind:

Which card did you exchange for Majestic Genesis?

Ahdor Updated info will be out later this week!

September 8, 2022 9:58 a.m.

Have you had any thoughts on adding or using Dragon Arch for ramp?

October 15, 2022 12:17 a.m.

Ahdor says... #18

YourDerangedDr from my point of view, it's way to specific.

In this currently list, there are only 18 cards that can be used for Dragon Arch's effect.

Having Dragon Arch and one of those specific 18 cards together is quite a stretch I'd say. But this is just my opinion.

October 16, 2022 8:05 a.m.

MattN7498 says... #19

YourDerangedDr Yes basically Ahdor reasoning. Hitting less than 20% of the cards in the deck and costing that much mana for one dragon isn't efficient at all. There's better cheat options that are more versatile.

Is this card any good here Shadow in the Warp?

October 22, 2022 6:06 p.m.

MattN7498 says... #21

Hellsing I talked with some other people about this card. It was the only one that stood out to be in the 40K set. It basically came down to usually getting to a point in the game where you want to be double spelling dragons and this reduction doesn't really help like others would, it doesn't effectively reduce 2 cmc on every creature and the second half of the card with the bonus damage was pretty meh. Like it's cool but isn't really something the deck was looking for if the rest of the card didn't really line up right. I think it's a neat card to include if you want. I just don't see the value in it.

What's your opinion on Blast-Furnace Hellkite for this deck?

November 13, 2022 11:42 a.m.

MattN7498 says... #23

NebulaMink Seems too expensive, not enough artifacts in the deck to always effectively reduce it and giving your opponents double strike could open up to some misfortunes that actually hurt you even though they're supposed to be attacking opponents.

Jator says... #24

did the newer sets and additions bring any changes to your decklist?

December 11, 2022 10:32 p.m.

MattN7498 says... #25

Jator Nope the deck is winding down in the sense that there's already so many good dragon cards to where any replacements would just have to be strictly better versions of current cards which I doubt will be happening that often. I replaced Brainstealer Dragon with Ancient Copper Dragon but if there's a set that comes out that has a lot of dragons for consideration/upgrades, there will be an update.
