A deck that I built at the pre-release of Hour of Devastation on the 9th of July 2017.
As per usual for the second set in a block, I was given six booster packs, four from the most recent set (Hour of Devastation in this case) alongside two packs of the previous set in the block (Amonkhet) and the task of constructing a 40 card competitive deck using only those 90 random cards and basic lands.
Usual rulings apply including the duplicate rule, legendary rule and Planeswalker uniqueness rule.
During pre-release, this deck took me to a 2-2 finish at my local games store, but I would not recommend it for constructed play.
Control is tough to play effectively in Limited. As control relies heavily on being able to draw into spells to disrupt the opponent (like removal and counterspells), drawing lands from draw spells can be a huge problem. This problem is amplified by not having access to Fetchlands to thin out the deck, thus increasing the odds of drawing a land in Limited.
The deck aims to control the board using
Magma Spray
and
Essence Scatter
as well as casting creatures like
Spellweaver Eternal
and
Firebrand Archer
to deal some damage.
Cryptic Serpant (AKH) is one of the deck's stars because the graveyard is always so full of counterspells that it becomes a 6/5 for two blue mana. Not bad for Limited.
Also,
Countervailing Winds
counters any spell for a cost of two generic and a blue (2U) because during pre-release there were upwards of 10 cards in my graveyard both times I cast it.
Tormenting Voice
also adds two cards to the graveyard (the discarded card and itself) to fuel
Countervailing Winds
and Cryptic Serpant (AKH).
Only 2x
Spellweaver Eternal
are in the deck but I added it to 3x because the server couldn't find the 1x
Thorned Moloch
that I ran at pre-release.
