@GureiSeion: Because Ghost Quarter and Tectonic Plate are common enough things. Opponents wait to hit my Ruins. Then I'm pretty much done with my wincon unless I SB, because Academy Ruins is my wincon. That's why I mainboard Pithing Needle now. I wait until an opponent drops a Quarter or Plate and then slap down a Needle. Once if ETBs, you can't respond to activate with the named card.
Also, Oboro saves itself from land D, so I can bounce it back to my hand. Usually people pick off my blue sources.
Eye of Ugin searches for any colorless creature. Wurmcoil, Titan, or Emrakul if I've SB'd him. Since I only have three or four targets, not really necessary to the deck running more than one. Though, I've been trying different things, like Memnarch.

That all makes perfect sense. I hadn't reread Eye of Ugin
and mistakenly thought it hit Eldrazi only and would do better switched with that SB Ruins. Thanks for clearing that up. And as a control deck, Oboro usually has the mana available to bounce.
Have you tested Memnarch
enough to say anything about him? I dig the thought of eventually nabbing all the things, particularly the nastier ones. Also, shame that Inkwell Leviathan
is still vulnerable to some of the more popular stuff out there.

Modern is too fast for Memnarch . Drops early, but you need enough blue sources to steal. It becomes a struggle to not only hit Tron, but drop enough blue to use him. So, he just sits there with an okay body and expensive abilities.
After using Memnarch, Inkwell wouldn't be very good for the same reason because of the two blue. I'm thinking of putting Platinum Angel back into the mix, but I've found him too fragile and not much of a threat, unless my match up is burn.

Updated list, added white. Plays a lot how I felt this kind of Tron list should feel. The old list was getting durdly to the point games went to time. Now I feel more consistent with dropping threats, not just sitting back countering. Driving my opponent nuts. Path to Exile is great for removing chump blocks on the wurms.

Love the flavor of this deck, and how it works really well unlike a lot of heavily flavored decks! +1

I notice the needles went back to sideboard. Otherwise, quite excited to see the Eldrazi trio at it again!

Needles really helped against manlands and great with Thrist for Knowledge. Shuts down even Deathrite Shaman completely. Definitely needs more playtesting before MBing again, but that's definitely my next goal.

Why do you have Talisman of Progress instead of Azorius Signet
March 31, 2013 3:49 p.m.
dreamlikeamaze says... #13
I use Talisman instead because it's slightly better than Signet because I can still cast a one mana spell when I drop it on turn two. Say I Condescend for one blue for the Scry 2 or Repeal a manland like Inkmoth or token and get to draw a card at the same time. It's great value over running the Signet just for that reason.

I have 2 minor issues with this list, though they are important issues. The deck is clearly not an aggressive or fast combo deck, with that said Remand is very weak outside of those decks, I would advise replacing Remand with something more potent, like Mana Leak . My second concern is with the number of Expedition Map s in your list, I would think that you would want to find and gather as many Urza lands as possible as fast as possible, Expedition Map is an excellent method for finding your vital lands, as such I personally would never want less than four copies of Expedition Map in my Urza Deck.
I hope this helps, best of luck with the brewings!

Just a nitpick, you wouldn't be able to Repeal an Inkmoth Nexus though.

@π_is_the_word: Remand is used to slow down other decks and cantrip. Mana Leak doesn't give me value. This deck isn't designed to hard counter everything, but to gain card advantage while slowing down the early game of an opponent until I get something online or time walk a bomb in the mid to late game.
After weeks of playtesting, I went down to three Expedition Map s and it's still consistent. I hit Tron as early as turn three and rarely have to use more than one each game, so the other two can be discard fodder to Thirst for Knowledge .

@Dallie: When Inkmoth Nexus becomes a creature, you can Repeal X for 0 and bounce it back. When a manland is activated and becomes a creature, it'll have a CMC of 0 that's also still a land. You can also Smother or Abrupt Decay it.
Thanks for the comments and suggestions, everyone.

But in the text of Inkmoth Nexus , it explicitly states that it's still a land, making its type land, artifact, and creature. It's still a land permanent.

Manlands have that text, same as Celestial Colonnade , Mutavault , Treetop Village , etc.
It's still a land, but it becomes a creature now due to the activation and becomes a 0 CMC permanent.
202.3a The converted mana cost of an object with no mana cost is 0.
April 2, 2013 10:39 a.m.
Yeah, and Repeal says a nonland permanent. It can't have the land type at all.

Oh, damn. Thank you for your persistence! I was too focused on the CMC ruling and it still being a land wasn't even registering, even after writing it. Wishful thinking after weeks being turn 2'd by an infect bro, I guess. :)

How important is that Condescend for 0? Not sure if I like the idea of Scry 2 with no card advantage.
April 2, 2013 11:41 a.m.
dreamlikeamaze says... #25
Depends on the match up. The Scry 2 can help lock in a T3 Tron. This list doesn't aim to rely on hard counters, but to dig and draw until something terrible drops.

Why an Academy Ruins in SB when there's an Eye of Ugin all alone (eldrazi-less) in MB?
One thing I couldn't figure out about the deck is Oboro, Palace in the Clouds - What does it do for you?
