Yeah, I've been playing the Simic aggro deck in my profile but I couldn't find a way to include Dragon's Maze reasonably and a lot if the new Izzet cards seemed cool so here we are. Ill play this at FNM win or lose. Just gotta keep it fresh.

For those of us too poor and unlucky to include a pair of Snapcaster Mage s, what would you recommend replacing them with?

There are two cheap ($-wise) alternatives to Snapcaster Mage . Those would be Archaeomancer (though i wouldn't recommend it) and Mystic Retrieval (<- THIS ONE definitely!). @Mythril_Sage

Augur of Bolas won't get you value from the old card but it will potentially give you new ones.

Mystic Retrieval is the only reasonable replacement that comes to mind and it comes with the added benefit of increasing the chance to flip delver.

Cool. =) Thanks for the advice. I think I'll try your deck out at my next FNM.
Consider me a fan of your deck making skills. =P

Oh, also I just remembered that Rush of Blood could get silly with Nivix Cyclops and Spell Rupture works decently as well if you can get around both of their costs.

Really like this deck! +1I'm making a similar deck but I'm splashing white for Boros Charm , Boros Reckoner and Geist of Saint Traft .On the subject of whether or not a copy of a spell is cast or not. I researched this when i wanted to know if Blistercoil Weird and Dual Casting would make an awesome combo. Check out 706.10. Sadly, copying a spell doesn't mean it's cast. :(

If I don't run into many troublesome artifacts in my meta then with what could I substitute Smelt ?
May 10, 2013 12:53 p.m.
It would really depend on what does give you trouble. Personally my largest concern with this deck is Rest in Peace , but I'm not in color to deal with enchantments so the best way I could recommend dealing with it is to try and cut out some more of the graveyard interaction through the sideboard.
One way you could possibly deal with it is to throw two Nivmagus Elemental into the sideboard and swap them out for the Snapcaster Mage (or in your case, the Mystic Retrieval and simply exile spells with flashback right off and try and beat down with the Nivmagus rather than the Cyclops, relying on him to do secondary damage based on draw.

No Guttersnipe ? Seems a shame when casting lots of cheap spells
May 10, 2013 7:02 p.m.
I would maybe remove the Turn / Burn ...just one or two...and if not, it at least seems like a viable sideboard item
May 10, 2013 11:24 p.m.
Guttersnipe is a card I'm mixed about... He could be helpful, but everytime I include him, I feel like he slows my game down. He's taking up a creature slot as a 3 drop and I want to keep my creature count down for delver.
What would you play in place of Turn / Burn ? I like it as a general creature answer or a burn, but you're right, it does feel a little weak sometimes.

I enjoy domedan's idea of adding white to the mix. In addition to his suggestions Feeling of Dread is a strong option to allow your Cyclops and Elementals to swing through/slow down Aggro/swarm decks. White also gives us the nice split card Wear / Tear to replace Smelt in the SB, allowing you to deal with the pesky Rest in Peace .

This deck is so simple and affordable, i love it! Dare i suggest Fling ??
May 11, 2013 6:48 a.m.
@Gankinu Thanks! I like to try and keep things competitive but cheap. I make some concessions for dual lands and maybe a couple other cards (here its snappy and in my other deck it's master Biomancer).
As for Fling , it's something I have considered; half the reason I would splash green would be for Flesh / Blood . But it's something I'd have to be careful with because regardless of whether the spell resolves or not, the cyclops will die and that's a little... Eh. Of course if it works, post swing that is going to be a win.
@Thaifortune I love boros charm here but wouldn't add in the reckoners... Ill have to try that one out because I hadn't considered Feeling of Dread and there is no point splashing a color for one card and a sideboard card.

The only way I'd use Delver of Secrets Flip in this type of deck is if you decide to use some cipher like Hidden Strings . Otherwise you can put a lot more powerful and more useful creatures in his place. A couple more Nivmagus Elemental s or even Guttersnipe would work a lot better than Delver of Secrets Flip unless your planning to run some cipher.

why not Melek, Izzet Paragon extra burn and the ability to play from your deck would be wonderful in this setup...scary really
May 12, 2013 7:05 a.m.
6 CMC is pretty rough on this deck to cast and the copy doesn't activate Nivix Cyclops is the reason he isn't included.
May 12, 2013 7:28 a.m.
you mind if I use this deck as a basis for a deck I'm thinking about...I believe Melek, Izzet Paragon should be utilized as a deck player not a spell copier
