U/W Modern Wizards

Modern Control Wizards

yad

Sideboard

Dominaria re-introduced Wizards to mtg and I wanted to see if this provided an opportunity in the Modern format. The general idea of this deck is one of control, but not in the traditional Blue/White sense. The biggest impact card in the deck is Naban, Dean of Iteration. It provides a Panharmonican effect that is triggered only when a wizards enters the battlefield. This multiplies what is normally an annoyance into a serious tempo disruptor. Aether Vial is also a critical component to the deck allowing instant speed ETB effects.

Battlefield Control: - Reflector Mage - Merfolk Trickster - Venser, Shaper Savant

Hand Disruption: - Vendilion Clique

Spell Disruption: - Venser, Shaper Savant - Voidmage Prodigy

Utility Cards: - Path to Exile - Vedalken AEthermage - Siren Stormtamer - Metallic Mimic - Meddling Mage - Cursecatcher

The deck contains a couple of soft locks that work really well either on their own or in combination with Naban: - Vedalken Mastermind combined with Venser, Clique, Reflector, or Trickster. Venser, Clique, and Trickster all have flash so depending upon the board state and cards in my opponent's hand I can use Mastermind to return any of these wizards and then flash them back into play. With Naban their ETB effects are then copied.

The Clique / Naban interaction is really fun in that each Clique trigger is resolved one at a time. So if you bottom one of their cards from the first trigger you can see what they draw and decide whether you want to get rid of that card as well.

  • Meddling Mage is used to lock out key plays from my opponent. Very effective after playing the Vendilion Clique.
