I've been wanting to make a deck featuring Thing in the Ice
so here we go! I figured a control deck would work well as we are going to be casting instants and sorceries anyways, and are built to survive until he flips and wins us the game. Any help is appreciated!
For the creatures we have Snapcaster Mage and Wall of Omens. They are great cards in a control deck anyways, and they don't being bounced by the thing. Snapcaster is particularly great with him as he can flashback a spell to remove a counter, then gets sent back to our hand so we can flashback another spell.
For our counter spells, we have Cryptic Command, Remand, Ojutai's Command, and
Familiar's Ruse
. Cryptic command is fantastic at stalling out the game while we stabilize and get the Thing to flip. Remand is great, and the fact that it's a cantrip makes it easier to flip the Thing. If you have 2 ice counters left, you can cast a spell, then remand it back to avoid wasting the spell as all of the opponents creatures bounce. Ojutai's Command is also good as we have a lot of good 2 drop creatures to bring back with its first ability, and the lifegain can be very useful against aggro and burn decks. I find I don't end up using the creature counter mode on it that often, but it's there if I need it and is definitely useful. Finally, Familiar's Ruse is one I'm on the fence about, and any other suggestions are welcome. I find I really need an early hard counter sometimes, and the cost can actually be a benefit. But it sucks if we get stuck with it and no creatures.
We've got some cheap removal to help us throughout the game, and can help me quickly flip the Thing. Path to Exile is just great, and I'm going with Oust as I really needed another cheap removal spell. The lifegain isn't really relavant on it, and by the time they draw it again we will be ready with counter spells or more removal. Finally, I've got Sleight of Hand to help our draws and flip the Thing quickly. I'm kinda new to modern so I'm still figuring out the sideboard, once I build the deck and test it out at FNM I'll be able to tailor that better. What do you guys think of the deck?
