Anowon, the Ruin Sage Elenda, the Dusk Rose Captivating Vampire Vanquisher's Banner Coat of Arms Bloodlord of Vaasgoth Door of Destinies Indulgent Aristocrat Patron of the Vein Legion Lieutenant Malakir Bloodwitch Herald's Horn Sanctum Seeker . These are all good Vampire Tribal or Any Tribal Cards. I would not add Damping Sphere, it has nothing to relate to vampires, along with Nihil spell bomb. If you need to take out cards to add the cards above, I would maybe only have 3 Blades of the Bloodchief, 2 Duress's, and maybe do the same for the non tribal vampires. However, some of the cards above are not legal in modern, so if I were you, I would switch to legacy or vintage which give you a wider variety of choices.

  • Spellbombs are good for match ups with a graveyard combo/graveyard vaule. Some of the cards recommened above are not modern legal so keep that in mind

Overall, this looks pretty well thought out. You've got an AVG CMC under 2 and a pretty classic breakdown, heavy on creatures, light on utilities, and all basic land. So I imagine this gets into gear pretty quick.

How's Guul Draz Assassin been? Seems like a pretty big mana sink for a deck with 20 lands... I'm think you'd get more mileage for overall less mana with Vampire Nighthawk. I imagine Drana, Liberator of Malakir would be pretty strong here, too.

I notice a lot of the spells included here have "when a creature dies" conditionals, but you don't have many ways of forcing that to happen. Opponents might remove your biggest threats and just take damage from smaller deathtouch creatures. So, given this is mono-black, some kind of direct removal in the mainboard seems like it would be useful. Defile, Cast Down, Murder, Doomblade, Go for the Throat, Bone Splinters, Geth's Verdict - you get the idea.

Along those same lines, if sometimes those "dies" conditionals are triggered by your own creatures leaving the battlefield, 1-2xImmortal Servitude will prove devastating to your opponents.

Sign in Blood seems fitting and useful here - I think you'll probably have good chances of gaining back the life lost, and in a pinch, you can use it for a kill.

Possibly useful lands: Cabal Stronghold, Bojuka Bog, Field of Ruin, Scavenger Grounds

Other potentially useful sideboard artifacts: Ratchet Bomb, Pithing Needle, Elixir of Immortality.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I get great value from guul draz assasin. I have not bought this deck yet but I do play a black deck and he can win games. I'm likely going to switch grave shifter to return from extinction. I believe some mana sinks will be ideal.

  • Cabal Stronghold is very hard to be mana positive. For example: On turn five, if you have this and four Swamps, you can spend three mana and tap this land to get four mana, which means you're breaking even, of course, so at this point, your payoff is that your colorless land starts tapping for black mana.

Thanks for mansplaining that, abbatromebone. I was wondering what the text of Cabal Stronghold said.

Vampires can actually be quite competitive, especially with the printing of Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord. But you are right, it won't be cheap to build the best version of the deck.

You could play some Viscera Seer in the deck. It gives you late game reach together with Kalastria Highborn. The ability to instantly grow your entire team with Cordial Vampire is also not bad. If nothing else, he allows you to at least get a scry off opponent's removal, and switch off Path to Exile so you can get your creatures back from the graveyard. Seer is often used with Bloodghast to great effect in typical Vampires builds.

Knight of the Ebon Legion is a great addition to the archetype from the latest set as well. Other cards you can consider are Stromkirk Condemned and Asylum Visitor. They work well together. Visitor has 3 power and represents card advantage, which is always useful.

good points. thanks for linking the new cards. i dont remember seeing them on cardkingdom. the knight squeezes in just under the budget, and i added some spot removal. I am not sold on the removal spells, but it does seem silly not to have some in a black deck. Asylum Visitor was on my mind. I thought i would rather have the immediate draw from Dusk Legion Zealot , but multiple possible draws is better, considering draw is most important on an empty hand anyway. It is also 3/1 with madness, obviously. I removed the Graveshifter so there will not be anything in the way. thanks again

Maybe consider a couple of copies of Vampire Nocturnus at the top end of your curve as it can just crush a opponent with a huge pump in power and evasion through flying.

Hexmage sets a chalice to zero but if it is on two then I cannot cast hexmage. Grim affliction has proliferate so it gives me the ability to deal with a chalice on two. If I had the hexmage I would cast it before they had the 4 mana to set a chalice to two. I would not be able to resolve another grim affliction after I set their chalice to three so I may have to cast it and let it get countered if I want to draw more from asylum visitor. It would also be decent against some other decks like humans and infect I think. Let me know if you have alternative ideas.

Nocturnus is definitely on the radar. I'm also thinking of adding vicera seer or some other sac outlet. I appreciate all the great suggestions. I have the deck now so I'm finally getting to test it off line.

Ratchet Bomb comes to mind. I believe XX will be counted as 00, so RB is ready to go against CoV as soon as RB hits the battlefield.

vorpalaxe says... #15

Thats true but then its the same as hexmage. In both cases it cant be played when the chalice has two counters. The rb is not great in other cases because 1 and 2 CMC is wiping out half my stuff and 3 and up is slow. I thought engineered explosives but that will be also only good against chalice and id be nice if my side board cards had some versatility. Plus ee is over budget.

RB is great against tokens, which is what it's usually in SBs for, that it works on stuff like Chalice of the Void is just gravy. But if CoV is that big of a problem for you, perhaps splashing green or white would be worth the slow down. Something like Nevermore would be pretty nice against CoV. Or Assassin's Trophy if budget allows. Or Generous Gift or Beast Within or Revoke Existence if opponents are also running Buried Ruin.

Well I think I have enough hand disruption together with the hexmage to deal with chalice. I can agree that grim affliction needs to go. I just need something to replace it with. I havent done games against tokens or chalice decks. Ill have to playtest to get a better idea.

+1 for Budget Vampires :)
also I recommend running 2x Castle Locthwain instead of 2x Swamp

Nice build. Viscera Seer is solid, have you thought about Fatal Push ? Good removal, revolt is easy to trigger and it’s budget.

Those are great with cracklands and bloodghast. Those decks are more common. In this deck morbid is easier to trigger. Also when I made this deck fatal push was 5 dollars and bloodghast was like 20.

How has Vampire Hexmage been working for you? Her ability doesn't exactly synergize with any of your other cards, and I don't know how often she is relevant against opponents' decks. I think higher curve threats like Captivating Vampire , Drana, Liberator of Malakir , or Nighthawk Scavenger might do better.

she can be versatile. She can destroy a planeswalker while putting counters on my vampires. Also I think I have a good balance of deathtouch and lifelink. The option to equip a first strike vamp with the Blade of the Bloodchief can be strong. When I run out of cards there is Asylum Visitor for draw and Knight of the Ebon Legion to sink mana. Also she gives the option to kill my own creature at instant speed which could potentially save my vampires from Anger of the Gods or something. The other reason for Vampire Hexmage is to take a counter off of the Chalice of the Void and other nonsense like that.

vorpalaxe says... #23

Also I forgot but if Vampire Hexmage kills a creature with first strike then counters can be added to my creatures before the normal damage is done.

Bumping the thread because it is updated with the new Markov Baron. Other improvements also make this my favorite deck. I am sure Vampire Cutthroat in the sideboard could be something better, but I am not sure what. Let me know what you think! Thanks =)

Thoughtseize would be a way better and more efficient option to mire’s toll.
