Vampiric Violence

Commander / EDH*

This is my first draft of an upgrade to the C17 Vampiric Bloodlust deck.

I've been wanting to build tribal vampires for a very long time, and had already purchased the mono-Black bloodsuckers a year or two ago. Edgar's addition of White lets me finally play both Olivia Voldaren and the Sorin Planeswalkers.

As demonstrated in the precon, Edgar supports both a classic Vampire aristocrats life-drain strategy, and a more Rakdos bloody-murder strategy, both with support from free tokens coming from his Eminence ability (all of these are amazing since you get effects for free without much possibility for interaction). This deck will focus on the latter, but will retain the lifegain/lifedrain theme via Lifelink effects and the Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond combo.

Vampires are amazing in combat. They grow easily and often buff the entire team, the often have good combat abilities like Lifelink or First Strike or Deathtouch, and many of them have great control abilities like creature theft. However, combat damage scales very poorly in a multiplayer format that starts off with 40 life. Dealing ~120 damage before lifegain through interaction and blockers is much more difficult that just dealing 20 to a single opponent. Even going for the Voltron win with a total of 63 damage (for three opponents) is still easier than regular creature beatdown. But we have a way around this deficit - Red offers us damage doubling effects. These stack with Double Strike. Lifelink means that we'll be gaining massive amounts of life, letting us deal with the damage from enemy creatures while our opponents (hopefully) drain away under the onslought. To this end, we have a symmetric and an asymmetric damage doubler in the form of Furnace of Rath and Gratuitous Violence respectively.

Combined with all of the +1+1 counter synergy, token producers, and tribal buff effects, this should make Edgar's brood an absolute nightmare to face on the battlefield.

Picked up Vault of the Archangel, which does exactly what this deck wants to do. Also now have a Braid of Fire and a Mana Echoes, but I'm not sure about whether/how to use either. Echoes can help push out some early bombs, but doesn't help with color requirements. Braid needs to have its mana used during upkeep, and only a few cards in the deck so far could actually do that (the obvious one is Olivia, and she's be amazing with Braid, but that works better in an Olivia deck where she's more consistently available).

I'm considering cutting down on the enchantments in favor of vampires who provide the same effect (ie, Defiant Bloodlord and similar). More thematic, easier to recur, helps build an army of tokens, but cost more to cast, and more vulnerable to removal.

Because raw damage remains the slowest and most difficult way to win in multiplayer commander, I still really want to use the damage doublers and similar effects...but they don't really synergize with the lifedrain effects in the deck. It does work with Lifelink, and it helps turn smaller vampires into big threats, but vampires already have good support in that area in the form of counters and anthem effects. These might be cut, especially since they remain high-cost enchantments I can't easily recur. Double-strike works better than damage-double in this case, since many vampires get Deathtouch.

Also looking at card draw, which has felt lackluster so far. Could just be bad luck, but its been pretty bad.
