Vannifar Land Destruction 2dh (50$ for Turn 4 Win)

Commander / EDH Budget Competitive GU (Simic) Land Destruction

DoctorWizard

Consistent turn 4 win.

Obviously not a deck for a casual table, but too weak for cEDH. But it's a good deck to stomp a pub stomper without investing thousands of dollars. And it scratches my optimizing itch. The "2dh" is a format where every card must be under 2$ except the commander.

"Pod" here means "use Vannifar's ability" for those who aren't familiar with Birthing Pod.

Play mana dork turn 2, commander turn 3, then on turn 4 pod through to Terastodon and clone it a couple times. Usually you can get 2 clones, for a total of 9 lands blown up. On turn 4 this usually ends the game. If people don't scoop, pod into Nullstone Gargoyle to stop cheap ramp and removal, keep clearing lands every turn, and return all their creatures with Profaner of the Dead. You can usually kill everyone with combat damage by turn 9 or 10.

To start the chain you'll need, by turn 4, a total of:

  • 3 land (at least 2 that don't come in tapped)
  • 1 mana dork
  • 1 cheap untap
  • 1 additional mana dork OR cheap untap. More is better though as it means more Terastadons on turn 4.

The chain consists of:

Other Tips:

  • If someone is holding counter magic open and you have an extra untap, pod to Gulf Squid then go through combat to second main phase (to clear their mana) to finish the chain.
  • If your hand isn't quite right on turn 4 (mostly if one of your bigger things is in hand), pod through Whirlpool Drake to redraw. Though this takes an extra untap, you will often net one from the redraw if it was 3 or 4 cards.
  • If you get stopped and the game goes long, making 4 Terastodons won't win it anymore. You can use Displace with Peregrine Drake and any of the Archaeomancer-like cards to create infinite mana, which then can be used to Displace a Deceiver Exarch-like card for infinite pods, which will get your deck out with infinite flickers on Terastodon and a Profaner for the win. You can tutor for Displace by poding to and through Drift of Phantasms, and get it back to your hand with Greenwarden of Murasa.
