Using creatures with higher power than their CMC usually provides (typically with a downside) so that we can scavenge onto whatever you choose. I usually go for Varolz, the Scar-Striped himself and go for commander damage, but if there's a better target like Glistener Elf or Hydra Omnivore they get the counters. There's a number of cards in to make your countered up creature unblockable, such as the swords, Rogue's Passage, Shizo, Death's Storehouse, and Trailblazer's Boots. Sword of Feast and Famine won't be in because you can't scavenge onto a creature with prot black and green.

It is possible to have a turn 3 kill, but it needs the perfect draw, and the deck isn't built to do this regularly. But basically you go basic land, Sol Ring, Golgari Signet. Turn 2 another land then Varolz, the Scar-Striped then Glistener Elf. Turn 3 cast Death's Shadow or Phyrexian Dreadnought and scavenge onto the elf.
