The goal of this deck is to fill your graveyard with high power / low cmc cards like Death's Shadow, Sheltering Ancient or Phyrexian Soulgorger in order to make use of Varolz's scavange ability.

Cards like Splinterfright and Codex Shredder as well as Jarad's Orders and Buried Alive help you to get scavange-targets into the graveyard.

One of the themes of this deck are +1/+1-counters:Reyhan, Last of the Abzan, Corpsejack Menace and Doubling Season make the scavange-ability of Varolz much more threatening. Winding Constrictor and Hardened Scales boost your +1/+1-counters as well.

As you are going to fill your graveyard with stuff, you can as well play cards that care about the number of cards in it: Nighthowler, Soul Swallower.

The deck has multiple win-conditions: You can attack and use cards like Overwhelming Stampede, Rogue's Passage or Brawn to get the combat damage through.

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, Dying Wish and Essence Harvest can finish opponents if attacking isn't an option or the life-loss-effect is needed to bypass "prevent-damage"-effects.

Ragged Veins is in there for the fun: whenever opponents block or are blocked by a huge creature, this card can be their defeat.

In the maybe-board are cards I considered putting in this deck, but didn't make the cut. If you want to reduce the cost of this deck you can remove Doubling Season as it is by far the most expensive card. Feel free to post suggestions on how to improve this deck.
