Varolz, the Scar-Striped [Scavenge]

Modern BG (Golgari) Budget Casual Counters Discard

Baconfish

Maybeboard

This deck is a renewed version of my old deck. It has been altered in order to provide some speed, and viability to the playstyle. The old deck was shut down too easily, and while fun when it worked, it just didn't work often enough.

Built around Varolz, the Scar-Striped in an effort to utilize his scavenge ability and place counters on a creature with evasion and which is hard to get rid of. Both Silhana Ledgewalker and Lotleth Troll does this job well, but due to the hexproof we're using the former. The evasion isn't as good, so to fix this we can use either a Walking Ballista or Hangarback Walker which can be sacrificed with Varolz, the Scar-Striped to create more flying creatures than most can deal with.

Creatures

  • Varolz, the Scar-Striped the main engine of the deck as he provides scavenge to the entire graveyard.

  • Silhana Ledgewalker is meant as the main attacker, as it's hard to remove which minimizes the risk of losing the counters placed on it. It has decent evasion as well to avoid being blocked by a ton of 1/1 creatures. Can be substituted for Lotleth Troll which is much easier to remove, but has better evasion and a discard ability.

  • Death's Shadow is one of the key cards in the deck and is meant to be thrown directly into the graveyard for scavenging purposes. It can also be a serious threat if we have low health.

  • Hangarback Walker a target for scavenge counters that can produce a ton of flying creatures. Can be sacrificed with Varolz, the Scar-Striped to trigger the tokens, and the tokens can be sacrificed to keep him alive.

  • Birds of Paradise a mana dork to accelerate the deck. The flying could in theory make them very lethal if some scavenge counters are dropped on them. Elves of Deep Shadow or Llanowar Elves would likely work as well.

  • Eternal Witness can bring back some of the spells that we without a doubt will lose to our self milling, and as both mills allows us to pick a creature, getting this one back shouldn't be too difficult.

  • Rotting Regisaur is a low CMC beater, which is great for scavenging, but can just as easily be used on the board. The discard is usually a help, and not very often a drawback.

Sorceries

  • Unearth can be used to revive anything in the deck and can be cycled if we don't need it. So glad to see this one become Modern legal.

  • Essence Harvest can be used to destroy an opponent even if he has damage prevention, and in a scenario where you play against others it also leaves you with a potentially huge healthpool.

  • Maelstrom Pulse is meant for mass removal, but could be replaced with Putrefy or Assassin's Trophy.

Instants

  • Asylum Visitor is a meant to add some tempo to the deck. Due to its madness it can be discarded with Lotleth Troll and played anyway, thus adding a creature at instant speed, and granting a +1/+1 counter at the same time. It is also an alright scavenge target, as it adds one more counter than it costs to scavenge. If the draw ability doesn't trigger from an opponent, chances are that you yourself can trigger it with relative ease.

The card worked as intended, but the deck needed more draw and consistency rather than a combat trick

  • Sylvan Caryatid is meant to speed the deck up, as they can be used as any colour of mana. They also have the benefit of being a rather tough creature and can be used as blockers, should it be needed. Due to the hexproof they make for a great counter deposit from Varolz, the Scar-Striped, and though they can't attack, the game can still be won with a Essence Harvest.

Replaced with Birds of Paradise to gain a bit of momentum a turn earlier. These aren't as good deposits for counters, but with flying and the ability to attack, they can actually be lethal.

  • Solidarity of Heroes can be used to buff up a creature which caries scavenge counters. There might be other ways to double the counters on a target, but this is a cheap way to do so in an instant. It works well with the fact that you can attack with the buffed creature as well as double the damage from an Essence Harvest

A fine combat trick that could potentially win games, but it was too inconsistent. I might try my luck making a deck with this theme as the main thing, but for now I'd rather focus on consistency.

  • Cryptbreaker Another onedrop to increase our chances of taking the board early on. The deck operates just fine with around 5 lands on the board, and I've found that I often have excess lands on hand. This guy can be used to discard those lands and get a creature in turn. He also makes it easier to return the Gravecrawler, and can be used to draw a few cards to get through our deck.

Might not fit the deck completely. Gonna test some more before removing it completely.

  • Eternal Thirst mainly meant for the Lotleth Troll as it is the main attacker and hard to get rid of. With trample, regeneration and the ability to grow if a creature dies, the Lotleth Troll is as good as unblockable by small creatures, and after getting buffed up, even large creatures. The lifelink could quite realistically regain 15+ life in a single swing.

Might not fit the deck completely. Gonna test some more before removing it completely.

  • Treasured Find can increases the chances of getting our spells and the like, since they often end up in the graveyard.

Replaced by Eternal Witness as it is much easier to get back on hand should it get milled.

Replaced by Corpse Churn to add a bit of reanimation to the deck, as well as adding a bit of tempo. Phyrexian Arena is great, but I want the deck to mill itself faster than what it can provide.

  • Corpse Churn more draw at no cost, and with the added ability to pick up any creature from the graveyard

Replaced by Grapple with the Past as it is just a complete upgrade with no downsides, not even moneywise

Replaced by Hangarback Walker as it is an effective target for scavenge counters and serves the purpose of saving Varolz in a more effective way at the same time
