This deck gets extreme value from absolutely everything in true Golgari-like fashion.
Here's how:Vexing Devils trigger morbid for powerful easy Brimstone Volleys. They can be scavenged using Varolz, the Scar-Striped for 4 +1/+1 counters just 1 mana!
Diregraf Ghoul
s and Gravecrawlers can also be scavenged for 2 +1/+1 counters for just 1 mana. On the battlefield or in the graveyard, they're going to vex your opponents!
Lotleth Troll is a powerhouse, being able to discard cards to pump himself up. Discarding sucks though, right? Wrong. Gravecrawlers can be played from the graveyard while any zombie is in play (and there are plenty of Zombies!)
Domri Rade
keeps you drawing into your deck, and offers easy removal if you need it, particularly when you have big creatures like Lotleth Troll and Falkenrath Aristocrat with regeneration and indestructibility!
What sucks vs aggro decks? Chumping/trading to slow you down does! Is that a problem here? No! Plenty of trample damage and removal and flying is available. Morbid triggers/Devils offer great reach with hits to the face as your opponent attempts to stabilise once you've dealt a huge beating to his life total. Falkenrath Aristocrat acts as a fantastic flying finisher which is very hard to deal with. If you haven't already scavenged the nuts out of your graveyard using Varolz, the Scar-Striped, when your Falkenrath Aristocrat hits the table you can scavenge onto her!
And if that's not enough, it's worth remembering that your Falkenrath Aristocrat is an excellent sac outlet, in a slightly different yet just as useful way as Lotleth Troll. Sacrifice a Gravecrawler/
Diregraf Ghoul
, gain indestructibility, replay your crawlers/ghouls from the graveyard or simply scavenge them back onto your aristocrat if you have a Varolz down!
Enjoy! ~WalzY
p.s. before someone brings it up, yes I've considered
Blood Scrivener
but due to the utility I have from my graveyard,
Domri Rade
acting as card draw, a planeswalker threat and removal at the same time, and the fact that the other zombies (
Diregraf Ghoul
and Gravecrawler) are simply doing a better job I see no need to include him. He could be sideboarded against a strange heavy-discard deck (my friend does run a nasty rats discard deck with Shrieking Afflictions, Liliana of the Veils, Pack Rats, Mind Rots,
Ravenous Rats
, Duress, Drainpipe Vermin where the Scrivener tempts me), but even then it feels unnecessary. By all means test away and let me know your findings here if you try variations on this build! I'm eager to hear if you can find any improvements.
