I think you'll have problems playing this deck against UW control (Supreme Verdict... ugh) and any deck that stocks a lot of removal or bounce. I tried something similar at FNM, without much removal, and got hammered. I've ended up stocking up on Bile Blight and Dark Betrayal because of the popularity of Mono-Black in my local meta.

You may want to add something simple like Grisly Salvage to dig for land or a specific creature at minimal cost, perhaps instead of Duress since you have 4 Thoughtseize already.

Thanks Kurono! Bile Blight is definitely main board material, I've added it in place of 2x Duress and 1x Thoughtseize .

Post your FNM results if you try it out. I'll be interested to see how your deck performs :)

I would drop the Master of the Feast and up the counts of some of your other stuff like Herald of Torment instead. Deff up the Read the Bones count to at least 2. a 5/5 flyer for 3 mana is nuts, however so is giving ur opponent clear card advantage. He works a lot like Pain Seer as he'll usually eat removal before u can cash in.

Black Aggro is outclassed by G/W Aggro across the board, I think Golgari is better suited for a more control approach which u seem to be shifting your deck that way.

If u wanna get back to the aggro I would say including Dreg Mangler and Lotleth Troll while u can still run them is a must.

Drop the 2x Mana Confluence for 2x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

With 4x Llanowar Wastes and 4x Temple of Malady the Conf's are overkill, more so considering you need the life loss to even utilize them. You have multiple B and G with multiple symbols in the CC so you could benefit from running Nykthos, for nothing else but to drop a Monster Genesis Hydra

Thanks for the advice APPLE01DOJ and xGhostx... I love Master of the Feast but I think you are right that the deck isn't fast enough so that the negative card advantage will REALLY hurt. What do you think about taking him out for 3x Courser of Kruphix and 1x Read the Bones . Some play testing can help fine-tune. xGhostx, with a lot of mixed mana I don't think I will get the most out of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx but will think about it; I think you are right about dropping the Mana Confluence and might actually include Evolving Wilds with the Courser of Kruphix s although it would be slow in an agro focus, as I move to more control mid-range it could be quite a powerful combination (especially with the occasional Pain Seer untap).

Wilds / Courser could work as well. I really think that Nykthos would work. It gives you the 1 if you need it for no life loss and can be a game changer mid-late game when dropping a X cost.

My current Golgari build runs 2x Llanowar Wastes 4x Overgrown Tomb 4x Temple of Malady and 2x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx with 4x Sylvan Caryatid and it works, I rarely get mana hooped. Post-Rotation I will be dropping the Tombs and running 4 Wastes and adding 1 Forest 1 Swamp.

An alternate option would be Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth but that really only helps even the B side of things.

In my experiences, Conf / City of Ass only work well in Tri-color+ builds where 1 wrong mana drop can and does seriously effect your game. Dual Colors, they are not needed and do more damage then good.

Deff replace with Courser & Read The Bones. Though I would get a 4th Caryatid first.

If u include the Evolving Wilds I wouldn't do more than 2 at most. I don't really see any benefit for this deck to have mana in the grave, so it's mostly for the benefit of Pain Seer and Courser of Kruphix I honestly think u may be better to go with the Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx as well. (even more so with Courser on deck) I wouldn't run Polukranos, World Eater without it.

More ramp will help things out, u have 3 ramp sources with 9 fatties.

What exactly is Silence the Believers on the SB for? I know it gets around indestructible but what specific threats did u have in mind for it?

APPLE01DOJ I was thinking Silence the Believers would be good versus Gods, Soul of New Phyrexia and Scuttling Doom Engine shenanigans. But I suppose two more Fade into Antiquity would be more cost effective.

Deck is still a WIP, so keep the comments and advice coming!

I think too many off-color fetchlands, b/c the deck-thinning is not significant enough to counter the life loss (though Courser of Kruphix does help with that). You'd have to see if you generally had enough devotion on-board to make Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx worth it.

Since you have a lot of double-black mana symbols, might be worth running two Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth --- that way you have a better chance to consistently cast Herald of Torment , Hero's Downfall and Bile Blight early.

I think Nissa, Worldwaker would be really good in this deck. Would give you consistent threats, plus additional ramp to cast Genesis Hydra and Garruk, Apex Predator .

If you're adding the KTK cards, you might want to remove the Duress from your SB, as they won't be legal when Khans hits. (Unless they reprint it ofc) Another card I would suggest is Murderous Cut instead of Ulcerate . You don't have to pay life, and you can get rid of used resources to make the spell B - Destroy target creature. Not bad!

Also a cool build. But I don't like Rakshasa Deathdealer and would put in Fleecemane Lion instead.

I think you should add Reaper of the Wilds it protects itself, its somehow a control tool with the deathtouch and you get to scry a lot. I would take the 2 Herald of Torment and put 2 Reaper of the Wilds . I know that it cost more mana but after deploying Sylvan Caryatid turn 2 you will almost always want a turn 4 drop to follow.

Very interesting, once Despise gets confirmed I would consider that as great sideboard against the mirror. I'm thinking the cat demon will do work in a Green-Black heavy deck so thats a sweet addition!

You only need one urborg. Also, Heir of the wilds is bad. Bad bad bad. Replace it with more removal, Like banishing light or utter end. In fact, utter end seems really good for this deck.

xGhostx says... #16

I dont think Heir of the Wilds is bad per se, but I think the spot can be better filled here. I agree more removal such as maybe some Banishing Light or Utter End Also Sylvan Caryatid seems solid here.

I also love Ajani, Mentor of Heroes in Abzan Rock shells.

January 27, 2015 4:55 p.m.

MangoPunch says... #17

Heir of the Wilds is excellent against other abzan, especially the more mid range builds. It can attack through Sylvan Caryatid without needing activation (attacking with Rakshasa Deathdealer can be a big tempo loss) and into or defend against any of their bigger threats threatening a really bad trade for them. I think 8-11 two drops is where this deck wants to be; Rakshasa Deathdealer is totally viable, with the heir as a meta call / to combat what gives me the most trouble. I will have to think about how this changes with the higher prevalence of WR tokens.

MAGESTIC_LLAMA & xGhostx: Banishing Light ]could be interesting, I think Utter End is a little slow when I have targeted removal and know what threats I care about. Sylvan Caryatid isn't what the deck wants to be doing - the midrange version is totally viable, but this is decidedly the beat down version. Some older builds of the deck ran Ajani, Mentor of Heroes and Elspeth, Sun's Champion as trump cards in the mirror; I think there is other tech that works as well though while keeping the gas to the floor: Heir of the Wilds, Wingmate Roc, Hunt the Hunter, Glare of Heresy.

I definitely appreciate the thoughts and advice, it's always worth thinking about alternate builds.

Dark Betrayal in the sideboard. It takes care of many threats, including a Tasigur, the Golden Fang for one mana.

February 19, 2015 11:19 a.m.

MangoPunch says... #19

@Guardians, Dark Betrayal is totally viable. It was in an earlier version (during ktk) but got removed for another Glare of Heresy, which was way more flexible in a pre tasigur world. We are playtesting tomorrow for a PPTQ this weekend and are trying to find room for Dark Betrayal or a third Hunt the Hunter. We are also testing Abzan Advantage as it will be less of a dead draw if RW heroic sides out some number of enchantments. I would love other advice and card suggestions you have so that we can jam a few reps in with them.

Are you running into problems with the legendary rule running 4 Anafenza?

February 21, 2015 11:45 p.m.

MangoPunch says... #21

No, if I have Anafenzas stuck in hand it's usually because they can't deal with the first one, which is a good place to be. I am sure there are situations where it wouldn't be good, but I think she is enough better than the alternatives that I am ok with it.

What if take out one Stance and one Sorin and add two Herald of Torment? That would up the creature count, add evasion, increase the aggro, and give another late game play. Flying Rhinos are backbreaking.
